A message to all the trashmen. When i was a little kid we lived in townhouses where we all shared one big dumpster. Trash day was the coolest thing ever for me. As soon as i heard the trash truck I'd run outside and just watch as the big truck lifts this massive dumpsters and dumps out the trash like a total badass. And the guys getting out grabbing all the extra bags flinging em into the back of the truck like the bags are just light as a feather. There was something so mesmerizing about watching how coordinated they all were. It was like as fast as they hop off the truck and lift the dumpster, they were gone. I know i never said it to you guys, but i thought you guys were total badasses. You made my day whenever you would notice me and wave back.

When I bought my new house I went out and bought two brand new trash cans 100 bucks a piece with little rolly Wheels. First time the trash man shows up to get my trash at my new house he dumps the trash then picks my cans up over his head and throws them into my yard as far as he can breaking off the little wheels. When I call to complain they basically told me to go f*** off and laugh at me for spending that much money on trash cans. I'm a mechanic by trade so I make sure that all of the cat litter we use to soak up oil and such on the floors goes home with me to go in my trash along with random cinder blocks and heavy s*** from work enjoy picking up all 250 lb of my trash every trash day until I move.

In my city it's simple. You throw out a couch or big items you have to buy a tag from the city or it won't get picked up and the police will fine you for leaving it on the curb. It's cheaper to pay for the special ticket for the city garbage man to take it then pay a $200 ticket from the police. It's like $30 bucks to get rid of a coach so people learned real quick it wasn't worth having the cops fine them.

I've always shown my garbage men respect, it's a tough job. When I was remodeling my first house I put a bunch of stuff by the curb that wasn't supposed to be there. I made sure that I was home when the truck came for pick up and I asked if it was ok for him to take the stuff I had put out. He said that he would take it so I helped put the garbage in his truck and thanked him. I asked him what kind of beer he liked and I would buy him a case. He told me that he was sober but liked Mt Dew. The next week I had 2 cases of Dew for him.

I was a beer delivery guy for a time. One morning on our first stop after we delivered the beverages (it was a gas station) I grabbed a breakfast sandwich and a drink and took them to the counter. When I went to pay, I kept getting declined. I knew I had money in my account and I was like "dude no, this job is hard I have to have some food." The guy behind me was like "I'll get it." It was early and he was a sanitation dude getting ready for his route for the day. He payed for my quick breakfast without hesitation. I kept wanting to run into him again and return the favor but never got to.
It turns out, someone messed up at the bank and issued everyone new debit cards, which inactivated all our current cards.

When I was manager of a deli, I always took care of our garbage guys. Gave them free drinks or subs in exchange for them to do the occasional extra unscheduled pickup when I knew our dumpsters would get full before trash day. And at Christmas and new years I always gave them gift cards to get a few free meals. It may not mean much to some people, but they were always so appreciative. And trust me in the restaurant business the last person you want to piss off is the guys who pick up your garbage. A lot of restaurants will try and take care of the garbage crew, or at least in my area anyway.

I always got along great with the Garbage Truck Guys. I took our trash cans up to the main "paved" road near my House. We live on a dead end dirt/gravel road and our house is the only house down that road. We own about 20 acres on both sides of the road that goes back to our House and the rest of the land behind us.
I made a low to the ground trailer that I just kept the trash cans in. I would pull the trailer up to the main road every week and drop the trailer by the side of the paved road. The guys emptied the cans and sat them back in the trailer. My wife would send baked goods or a pie in a Box with me sometimes and I would leave them on top of one of the cans for the Truck Guys.
They would leave a note or if I was up there to get the cans about the time they usually came by, we would talk and they thanked my better half for the treats.

I worked as a garbage man once myself, more specifically I was the guy that rode on the back of the truck and tossed the trash in... Not the driver lol
I think a lot of people tend to forget not only how NECESSARY sanitation is, but how hard the job itself is. Imagine 2-4 garbage cans per house, which could weigh anywhere from 20 to 200 pounds depending on the contents. Multiply that by dozens or hundreds of stops, depending on the size of your town or city. Beyond that, you're in the elements.. be it extreme heat, or snow and sleet.
A few of the people on our route would occasionally leave treats/gift cards / etc.. mostly around the holidays. I always appreciated the entire f*** out of those people. Too many, look down on people in these sort of occupations.

Wow, this just became the best comedian podcast. Good on you for bringing hard working humans on. They got stories too. This was a great episode. You are a real one, Theo.

It's good to hear from real life everyday people and not the same comedians.

My dad taught me to always give a nice tip, especially at the holidays, to all that provided a service, especially the garbage guys. We appreciate you💓

In terms of traffic flow, I personally believe it would be better for everyone if garbage collection was overnight. Might even be more efficient for them..Though people would complain no matter what time of day

Bins on the side of the road sucks. I miss my hometown where we had big alleys and private dumpsters for 3-4 houses. Plus, it made dumpster diving amazing as a kid!

Hell no, they finally banned them from starting early mornings in my area. You really want that noise in the night?

Screw your traffic and let us have some peace and quiet at night. I used to live on street where they would pick up restaurant trash at night. It basically woke everyone not wearing earplugs.

My grandpa was a garbage man for 30 years back when they used to hang off the back end and manually lift the cans in. He also grew up in poverty in the south and had polio as a kid but worked hard to eventually get out of his braces and worked hard to provide for my dad and my 4 aunts. He was an amazing man and grandfather , every time I feel sorry for myself I remember if he could do that type of hard labor having the illness he had then I can get over whatever bullshit I’m dealing with.

As a former garbage man of 4 years i cant wait to relate to every topic. I once flipped an old ladies trash can upside down after she DEMANDED me to put it back exactly how I found it like I was some kind of child. So i did it. Just not how she would've expected.
