The first time I ever heard this beautiful hymn was in 1986 when our church, First Baptist, Waco, Texas, was undergoing a complete renovation of our 1907 sanctuary. We were meeting in the gymnasium of our activities center for the duration, and our music director sang it as a solo for the offertory anthem. I was stunned at its beauty and made sure I recorded it the next Sunday when it was televised. Sadly, I taped over it later when our choir sang My God and I. I just wish I had kept it. We never sang congregationally in the intervening years and it is no longer even in the current hymnal. Another that I always loved was A Child of the King, page 555 in the previous hymnal, but now it's been removed as well. We have a new song leader who is tremendously talented and I like him, but every service he has this tremendously long praise hymn we have to suffer through--it's always in the bulletin with notices to sing the chorus twice, then go back to another chorus. They're uniformly tedious and tuneless.
