      wow, why such animosity? Why do you doubt Professor Lennox when he says he believes? He is professor of Mathematics at Cambridge, what "certificate in higher knowledge" do you have? And please stop trying to sound "educated" because it's obvious by the way you write that you are either a rather young person trying to sound intellectual, or simply a person who likes to pass himself off as an intellectual. Write what you mean in plain language.

    • @crusaderking5387
      @crusaderking5387 10 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      sophie sundar
      What do you mean you can't believe what you cannot see? You believe your children love you don't you? Can you see their love under a microscope or through a telescope? the fact that they are "loving" could be just an act, just like you believe Lenoox is acting, but you believe that they actually love you anyway.
      And what makes you think you can't know that God exists?... Try this mental exercise: 1) everything that exists has a cause
      2) the universe exists
      3)therefore the universe has a cause
      What would be the cause for the universe's existence according to you?
      Try another mental experiment:
      We observe that in the universe all things in motion are put into motion by something else, and that something is in turn put into motion by something else again, but this can't go on forever because then there would be no motion at all, therefore there must be an unmoved mover to start the process of motion;this we call God.
      Try this one:
      In the universe we see that everything that exists is contingent on something else for its existence i.e. nothing can bring itself into existence, for that would mean that it existed before itself, which is absurd. therefore there must exist something that is not contingent on something else for it's existence, this we call God.
      There is a lot more, but this will do for now.

      Oh come now! Not everything in life is bad. There are some truly beautiful things life has to offer. First love, close friendships, children, sex, beautiful sunrises and sunsets, song laughter,childhood innocence.... surely you must have experienced some of these things! It's not good good to see only the thorns when you look at the rose bush.
      I'm sorry you've lost your idealism. I myself have lost everything but my idealism! Family, friends , children , wife and finally money-I've lost them all, the only thing left is my idealism.
      I will try not to allow myself to become bitter. When I had all those things I enjoyed them as much as I could. Now they are gone, and I must learn to do without them.
      God has quietly spoken to me all my life but I didn't pay attention. I wanted to do his will but I was not strong enough, I loved women,wine and song too much, so I lost everything. I lost it myself through my own actions. If I had obeyed His moral laws I would have been on top of the world right now. But I didn't so I'm at the bottom instead!
      I'm very sorry you have witnessed and perhaps suffered a lot in your life. When bad things happen it's understandable that one would question whether God exists. But you must not lose hope. You are a child of God even if you don't believe He exists. You may have given up on Him but He will not give up on you. Jesus Christ came into the world for people like you and me. The broken and broken hearted. Have faith mother!

      I.- Why Religion Matters Even More: The Impact of Religious Practice on Social Stability
      By Patrick F. Fagan, Ph.D.
      December 18, 2006
      Over the past decade, considerable research has emerged that demonstrates the benefits of religious practice within society.[1]Religious practice promotes the well-being of individuals, families, and the community.
      Of particular note are the studies that indicate the benefits of Religion to the poor.[2] Regular attendance at religious services is linked to healthy, stable family life, strong marriages, and well-behaved children. The practice of Religion also leads to a reduction in the incidence of domestic abuse, crime, substance abuse, and addiction. In addition, religious practice leads to an increase in physical and mental health, longevity, and education attainment. Moreover, these effects are intergenerational, as grandparents and parents pass on the benefits to the next generations.
      Read more:
      www.heritage.org/research/reports/2006/12/why-religion-matters-even-more-the-impact-of-religious-practice-on-social-stability
      II.- There are many (thousands) of people that claims to be part of supernatural event, like cure, etc, in Fatima 70,000 people Witness a supernatural sun effect.
      there is 2,000 miracles attributed to "Padre Pio", but the famous one is to cure a blind girl, her eye were not formed completely, she is alive and is living prove of a supernatural cure.
      Can you explain in a natural way most (some, a few, a couple) of the Fatima's Lourdes' and/or Padre Pio miracles?

      You say religion is (1) UNNECESSARY is (2) for children of smaller brain,(3) 99% negative results of their prayers.
      I hope you are able to distinguish between religion, religious people, church, God and the interaction among all of them.
      But let start with Religion’s definition: Religion has been defined as man’s best effort to reach God; Christianity is God’s best effort to reach man. (WLC)
      Before start the discussion I will say that Science is as bad as religion because science has developed weapons of massive destruction that kill millions of people, if you believe that, then you are wrong in both sides, intelligent people will say that science is not bad, what is bad is the scientist and the application they given to the science; in the same manner Intelligent people will agree that religion is not BAD, what is bad is the people that uses religion to their own purpose.
      Quote: “The atheist philosopher and entrepreneur from Switzerland, Alain de Botton which has just launched its new book called Religion for Atheists: A non-believer's guide to the uses of religion, believes that religions, mostly remind us that life is difficult, instead of thinking that everything is done and everything is perfect, we do see that we have failures as human beings, but these can be overcome through a spiritual shear, but also ethical and practical, solidarity action”.
      Alain de Botton, who despite calling themselves atheist, says that religion is full of great and interesting ideas useful to society, even for those who do not have the need to be believers: "Religions do something good for the community bringing people together around a set of values, and that works great ... are also very good for ethics, to remind us to be good people.
      Sophie what argument you could give to that Alain de button to prove he is wrong too?
      (1).- When you say religion is unnecessary, I’m sure you didn't read or wanted to understand the Heritage research report in the next link:
      www.heritage.org/research/reports/2006/12/why-religion-matters-even-more-the-impact-of-religious-practice-on-social-stability
      What you are saying is that the results of Heritage foundation research are wrong? please note that the report shows hard data no declarations like you do, but in order to make a intelligent and ordered communication between you and me, you must give me the reasons of why the report is wrong, is not enough to make declarations that religion is bad and so on, I will give you a summarized benefit report
      Summary and Policy Implications:
      Strong and repeated evidence indicates that the regular practice of Religion has beneficial effects in nearly every aspect of social concern and policy. This evidence shows that religious practice protects against social disorder and dysfunction.
      Specifically, the available data clearly indicate that religious belief and practice are associated with:
       Higher levels of marital happiness and stability;
       Stronger parent-child relationships;
       Greater educational aspirations and attainment, especially among the poor;
       Higher levels of good work habits;
       Greater longevity and physical health;
       Higher levels of well-being and happiness;
       Higher recovery rates from addictions to alcohol or drugs;
       Higher levels of self-control, self-esteem, and coping skills;
       Higher rates of charitable donations and volunteering; and
       Higher levels of community cohesion and social support for those in need.
      The evidence further demonstrates that religious belief and practice are also associated with:
       Lower divorce rates:
       Lower cohabitation rates;
       Lower rates of out-of-wedlock births;
       Lower levels of teen sexual activity;
       Less abuse of alcohol and drugs;
       Lower rates of suicide, depression, and suicide ideation;
       Lower levels of many infectious diseases;
       Less juvenile crime;
       Less violent crime; and
       Less domestic violence.
      No other dimension of life in America-with the exception of stable marriages and families, which in turn are strongly tied to religious practice-does more to promote the well-being and soundness of the nation's civil society than citizens' religious observance. As George Washington asserted, the success of the Republic depends on the practice of Religion by its citizens. These findings from 21st century social science support his observation.
      (2).- You say Religion is for children of smaller brain.
      Let me tell you that close to 88% of the world populations believe in God or in a supernatural force all of those are related somehow to a religion in low or high degree, 40% of the scientist in the world are theists, 50% in the USA are Theist, 70% of the doctors in medicine are theist, 8 out of the 10 higher IQ are theist.
      3) You say 99% of their prayers are negative results, but I Say 1% of positive results are too much for a world that reject God (be believer or religious people does not meant we do what God want us to do)
      You as an intelligent people should give us reasons, arguments of:
      1).-Why Heritage research foundation report and Alain de Botton are wrong?
      2).- What argument you will use to convince to 50% of scientist (in USA), 70% of the doctors, and 8 of the higher IQ that they are like a children of smaller brain?
      3).- How you convince that religious people that use the religion to their own purpose are not bad, what is bad is the religion they profess?
      4).- So, do you think God have not good reasons to No give us everything we ask him in a prayer, because he give us only 1% of what we ask?
      5).-How do you know God creates the World (and universe) in six days of 24 hours? what is your reference if the sun was placed in the 4th day?
      I think your research is good, but it is incomplete till you analyze whit an open mind the other half of your problem: Religion-God.

    It was a great talk, always love Lennox. I was just simply grieved to see just how far the fool got before an end was put to it. I love the academy because it is a place where we can hold each other intellectually accountable and reach for truth. But this young man, and others like him, are constantly reducing it to a gathering of babbling fools who still sadly believe themselves wise.

    • @meggold3422
      @meggold3422 7 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Daniel: I agree totally. That young guy was horribly rude. It is possible that he was a student of Dawkins, of sorts, who told all non-believers to mock Christians with open ridicule and contempt, of which we have sadly seen a major increase in several years. Ironically, this methodology accidentally disproves in certain ways how we can be moral without God, in a strictly genetic and cultural framework, as Sam Harris and the like attest. Darwin, and many other atheists of old had almost always stood firm with "survival of the fittest", which showed only those with the strongest genes, with the deepest sense of self-preservation, would end up making it to the next stage of evolutionary development. Also, with regards to the problem of evil, this lad also makes it clear that life without God will mostly see people fighting one another to get to the top, that only their viewpoint is important, and that all others, such as Christianity, should be shut out--even eliminated in open discussions, altogether. The New Atheists have more than hinted at this self-proclaimed Utopian world view. Hitler and Stalin already showed how disastrous the outcome of a world devoid of Christianity could be. The young man (who I really hope was not supposed to be the moderator of this talk) showed in his utter lack of respect for John Lennox and his views that another Nazi Germany set anywhere in the world without uttering God's Name is not at all far-fetched.

      And there isn’t a single recorded case that happened under controlled conditions.
      But of course the main problem is that if NDEs were real then that would be evidence that Christianity is false and that your religious beliefs don’t have anything to do with where you spend eternity.😉

  • @tommarshall7247
    @tommarshall7247 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    One thing that strikes me about these debates and qs, is how many people ask why you have to postulate God, as if that was a starting point without also being a conclusion- like it's an idea that's come from nowhere. It's like they think a Christian starts by assuming the existence of God: but a belief in God may have been reached through years of questioning and reading and reflection and testing, and personal reflection. Who would treat matters of life and life after death and meaning so lazily that they don't examine a faith to see if it s true, reliable, works, etc? Sure, you might start off with, "Why not God?" but if you stop there and explore no further, then your faith isn't very meaningful. So, what usually goes unsaid, is the questioning, the reading, the thinking, the living, that someone like John L has done in the background, over many years to lead him to where he is now- the unseen foundation.

If one can not love his neighbor as himself, he can not love God with his enitre being. I can speak with anyone about opposing viewpoints, as long as their are open minds and hearts willing to speak respectfully and civilly. Otherwise, it's just someone barking their views at me, both sides of the argument gaining nothing, and losing time.

And that's what I've told people hurting in ministry for years. What they need now is, not "why has this happened?". Because that will not satisfy. But "where do I go to find hope and comfort?" And that's Jesus.

    Another way to answer the question about why the universe would be created by God rather than a sandwich or whatever could be answered philosophically. Things like sandwiches, spaghetti monsters, and so on would be made of mass-energy, and that came into existence with the grain of the universe and so could not have existed when there wasn't a universe. Furthermore, again, philosophically speaking, the creator of the universe not only couldn't be made up of mass-energy, but it also would have to be timeless since time didn't exist without the universe, same goes for space, so whatever created the universe couldn't be made up of space and must be spaceless. Also, whatever created the universe would have to be omnipotent since it would need the power to create the universe. Furthermore still, for creation to happen, a decision would have to be made, if there's no decision, then there would have to be a mechanism to cause whatever created the universe to create the universe, but a mechanism would mean there is something else that created the mechanism, and you are still left with a decision needing to be made. Of course decisions come from minds. Do you have a spaceless, timeless, immaterial, omnipotent, personal (the decision but means personal) something that created the universe, and since it's personal it's a being, and so philosophically we arrive at God rather than anything else as nothing else will satisfy the requirements. That argument isn't scientific, but we know that science is not the only way we can know things, furthermore, science relies on philosophy to be done. Science needs us to presuppose marry, logic, and reasoning for us to do science in the first place, so philosophical reasoning should be considered perfectly valid by any scientist. At any rate, there is a non-religious, rational reason why the creator must be God rather than anything else, and the question of why it can't be anything else simply ignores philosophical reasoning and is mostly asked as a way of trying to amusingly misdirect people away from honest thought on the matter.

    41:56 "...if you are driven (...) to believe in a starting point for space-time, you're driven to believe there was nothing, in the philosophical sense, before that; so, you're presented with the massive problem: how do you get something from nothing?" Of course, there was no such time before time at which there was nothing. Time has been around from all time even if 'all time' means a finite amount of time. So, the conclusion that the universe came out of nothing unless God created it is dubious. Cosmological arguments fare better with the principle of sufficient reason than with the principle that nothing comes out of nothing. That's the problem with the Kalam.

      Nothing means nothing including no time. Time has been around since it came to existence (same as you) and therefore, as you concluded, it exists for a finite amount of time. But what was before time?

    EXPANDING UNIVERSE.MENTIONED
    IN HOLY QUR'AN 1500 YEARS AGO
    ALMIGHTY ALLAH THE MASTER CREATOR
    Who can claim 1350 years ago that the universe is expending?
    والسماء بنينها بايد و انا لموسعون o
    " And the heaven We built it with power, and indeed, We are the expander "
    (And We it is Who make the vast extent, thereof )
    (Qur'an, 51:47)
    Until 1931, physicist Albert Einstein believed that the universe was static. An urban legend attributes this change of perspective to when American astronomer Edwin Hubble showed Einstein his observations of redshift in the light emitted by far away nebulae - today known as galaxies.
    After Hubble discovered that the universe was expanding, Einstein called the cosmological constant his "greatest blunder."
    At around the same time, larger telescopes were being built that were able to accurately measure the spectra, or the intensity of light as a function of wavelength, of faint objects.
    Almighty Allah is the Creator of the whole universe.He says:
    Should He not know what He created? And He is the Subtile, the Aware.
    The knowledge of scientists is very limited and insufficient to understand the universe! ! Recently NASA launched JWST. This telescope will see the beginning of the universe and how it evolved. Today the scientists accepted that they know very little about the universe.
