Like many on here, I've seen a ton of these tiny spaces. This is a Master Class. So many great ideas. A lot of the tiny spaces in other videos have clever ideas for saving space, but many seem like they would become awkward and annoying over time. This seems all so livable.
One of the best designs I've seen on this channel. The space flows well, still feels like a home and isn't too difficult to maneuver. Lots of good fixes that don't sacrifice ergonomics and aren't overly high tech (those sofabeds, for example, look way sturdier and comfier than most pullout couches!) Shoutout to the shower and the kitchen backsplash - the shallow shelves actually work better than a deep shelf for storing condiments and such.
I really love this apartment. The only thing I can see that I would change is I would want the trash/recycling compartment sealed when it's closed so silverware drawer isn't in the garbage fumes.
Yup, I thought the same thing when they "reclaimed" the volume right above the trash for silverware! Those are two things I'd like very far apart not sharing the same container.
Simply brilliant. A small space requires a lot of storage so that it doesn't feel cluttered, and this definitely works. I love the storage on the wall of the kitchen, it may be the simpler one but I'd never think about it.
I find a lot of transforming spaces ingenious but too much of a faff for real everyday living. This place looks completely liveable and answers my doubts over whether you could live with one comfortable configuration daily and only bother to change when say visitors come over. Love it.
As an architecture student, seeing clever space efficient designs always makes me super happy 😄. I would love to spend time in such a convertible space to see what it really is like
Oh wow this is soo gorgeous- soo carefully and cleverly planned and layed out. This would have to be my fave so far. Agree with previous comments to see this guy plan a tiny home.
I remember watching this years ago and watching it again, it's just as charming and inventive and just beautiful. It's sometimes hard to see the art and craft in what architects do but, here is screams off the screen. All of these problems solved, all of these beautiful solutions to make a space much more than what could have been before.
Your first video of Robert’s NY apartment and his and his wife’s clever designs was the one that got me hooked on small space living. He is one of the pioneers of this type of living. Practical and stylish. Another job well done!
Kirsten, it would be helpful if you could direct people where to get the special hardware/hinges, etc we see being used in some of these compact spaces.

this is one of the best designed tiny spaces i've seen yet. most are ridiculously uncomfortable to use and awkward looking, but this one looks very liveable.... too bad you didn't ask him what technology is used for that pivoting wall... that is something i need to improve in my house.

Amazing concept/apartment!!! It’s like a “Swiss Army Knife” concept... so many tools or in this case rooms and closets in one:-) there’s so many multifunctional things in this little cool studio apartment
A lot of small ideas that are pretty neat, put together in the right way to make a genious living space! :D Personally I think that this type of appartment, that has convertable, multi use spaces, is the most important answer to the rising housing cost and more dense urban settings.
Not here to argue about that, you have absolutely valid points that need to be adressed ASAP :) In my home town, housing prices are going through the roof as well and no one is really sure why, it just happens. An apartment is now almost as much as a house with garden was. So now image the prices for the house Oo On the other hand we can't have suburban settlements grow and grow, they eat up way too much ground. That is why I think living space needs to become more dense. Not crammed like Manhattan or something, but the question do you really have to have a house seems valid to me and I don't think you do. An apartment like this (maybe not by the star achitect so its less expensive) can do a lot for you. When the cities are build in more of a welcoming fashion, as in more green spots, better distributed shopping options, it is a good concept for the future. Office, shopping and housing areas should be more mixed and loosened up with small parks so everything is more homogenous and feels less crammed while still housing more people per square meter. And it can cut down on commute load and time when housing and office spaces are more mixed. Everyone could benefit from it.

It's impt to know the top tier/top 1% will want the country to be run as capitalistic arena. They stand to benefit. The remaining 99% can easily topple them and revert to "citizens first" "humanity first" ruling and _not_ capitalistic as the way a nation is run...trick is it takes a lot of combined efforts n honestly, truly seeing the top 1% as what they are....and not getting duped or embroiled in their flowery language. Housing/shelter costs that are "thru the roof" is like saying a human body has cancer...stop running a country like capitalistic arena and there is space for hope else....get used to being a hamster. Running....running on that wheel...round round round...age 50..60......70 and we still slave for the top 1%. Choose well. Choose wise.
The problem is not capitalism, the problem is the need to always grow. Unlimited growth destroys every system, no matter how the system is built or what it does. I've been listening to Simon Sinek a lot lately and I think he hits the nail on the head. But that's just my opinion.

And while Mr. Slade didn't choose the nicest words, he has a point: problems arise, when people don't play by the rules. And usually there is always a top 1%, because until now we have mostly relied on revolutions that only turn a system on it's head instead of rebuilding it completely. So, May. Don't just ignore everything you don't like, face critique and grow with it, refine your world view with outside opinions like from Mr. Slade.
I watched it for few times still couldn't believe where he fit all that into the space I might copy some of the concepts but it's unique to the space good job by the architect

It makes me want to redo my studio in paris, but I cannot imagine how much this would cost!!!! More than the apartment! But it is fabulous...so many really well thought-out ideas!
I love the compact design and using each space still giving spacious look. Implementing all the features which are required in a house. This small room is amazingly magnified with all requirements still spacious is truly a work of intelligence. This integration of design is definitely difficult but it is really worth for the people who would be using it in their small homes and surely will make it a better place to stay.
I remember KDs video showing the architect and his architect wife's NYC home and it's based on this same ergonomic, pull up, pull down system. Very clever
Amazing. But I shudder to think what all that customized “functionality” must’ve cost. Only in an extreme real estate market like New York would you be able to justify the engineering and bespoke solutions to maximize a small space. Beautiful all the same!
You could take elements. Such as the big wall of the bedroom, it doesn't need to be a thick cabinet, it could be just one large wood panel, it would then still provide you with the ability to hide away the bedroom into the wall, and all you to create two separate rooms. You'd only lose those cabinets in that bit of wall. But in reality, they're so shallow they aren't useful anyway. You can still have the window etc. The cabinets either side of the Murphy bed can be replaced with standard IKEA cabinetry. The Murphy bed itself can be a standard basic Murphy bed. The overall effect would have very little difference to this in appearance and functionality. But at a fraction of the cost. Most of this apartment can be achieved by combining IKEA furniture, and a little DIY.
I think this space is beautiful and luxurious in its simplicity. I can't believe that this sort of detailed design (or at least elements of it) isn't the norm for every interior space. I know this design was for a studio apartment but I think many people who live in apartments or small houses (myself included) who would also benefit from this clever design.

KUdos to the cabinet maker...it's one thing to imagine, but another to build it! Nice. I was contemplating moving into the city and doing something similar in a small one bedroom.
genjii931 this arguably is a small house, but build as an apartment. You can easily use the same tricks for a tiny house, though the folding wall will probably be a no go in a slim container like house. The wall bed is however a common feature in tiny houses.
Dumble Door you lost me at "easily" Yes, you could use some of these ideas in a tiny house, but augmenting them with width constraints isn't easy. Also some of the ideas wouldn't be as functional in a tiny house. I feel you too easily use the word "easily." Also regardless of if we "can" use these tricks for a tiny house, it'd be interesting to see how this guy would design a tiny house. There may be other tricks up his sleeve or ideas he'd come up with, when pressed with an even smaller size. It's easier to design for bigger spaces, it's harder to design for smaller ones. Nothing "easy" about it. But for me it's definitely more fun! :)
I especially think his shower door idea could be adapted to a tiny house. I hate the "wet bath" concept, and this looks like it could be used in tiny houses to maximize bathroom space without resorting to that. His multiple-use philosophy is key in tiny house design, though he'd have to adapt a lot to a tiny house situation, the way he thinks seems like it would serve him well. Tiny houses seem to adapt well to vertically doing things (loft above kitchen/bath, etc), rather than horizontally, but his brain seems to work in the right way.
One of the best. I love everything about it. Although initially, I thought the hydraulics on the table was frivolous but then it served its purpose. One if the better designed tiny spaces. Bravo🙌🏼👏🏽

I know when I'm sharing a 1 room apartment with 5 other people, being able to use the bathroom sink at the same time as someone else is showering is a must lol
I love the movable wall, that is ingenious! I’m not a fan of Murphy beds but this system is used perfectly here. The whole apartment is incredibly well designed! And I really love the way the designer executed everything and worked around the limitations. This is one of the best designs I’ve seen yet! Truly inspiring. However, everything about this flat feels like a secondary home or a weekend getaway. The thing with the movable wall is ingenious but I’m not sure I’d wanna do that on a daily basis. The bathroom is cleverly designed, but after showering at least half of the floor is gonna be wet. And the kitchen is clearly designed for someone who rarely eats in; I’d go as far as saying it wouldn’t even work for someone who uses it regularly. Also, there are very few places where one could hang pictures, giving the place a kind of hotel or high-end AirBnB vibe.

One of the best. I love everything about it. Although initially, I thought the hydraulics on the table was frivolous but then it served its purpose. One if the better designed tiny spaces. Bravo🙌🏼👏🏽

I know when I'm sharing a 1 room apartment with 5 other people, being able to use the bathroom sink at the same time as someone else is showering is a must lol
I love the movable wall, that is ingenious! I’m not a fan of Murphy beds but this system is used perfectly here. The whole apartment is incredibly well designed! And I really love the way the designer executed everything and worked around the limitations. This is one of the best designs I’ve seen yet! Truly inspiring.
However, everything about this flat feels like a secondary home or a weekend getaway. The thing with the movable wall is ingenious but I’m not sure I’d wanna do that on a daily basis. The bathroom is cleverly designed, but after showering at least half of the floor is gonna be wet. And the kitchen is clearly designed for someone who rarely eats in; I’d go as far as saying it wouldn’t even work for someone who uses it regularly. Also, there are very few places where one could hang pictures, giving the place a kind of hotel or high-end AirBnB vibe.
