    I've been using Roam Research for awhile, and it's truly transformed my life - it made it easier to study new things, write more and create new ideas.
    But I also noticed lots of comments about how Roam can be overwhelming for those who just started to use it.
    There are now hundreds of articles and videos about Roam, and many people don't really know where to start. This is why I wanted to make a short, simple video about how to use Roam without any jargon.

    I am so grateful I happened upon your video as my first "how to use roam" video. Just when my anxiety started to rise, this video snapped me into a "no pressure" mindset. I especially appreciated the last comment about letting the patterns of your ideas emerge. Thank you so much for your insight!

    Bit late to this but so true. I was attracted to Roam due to the simplicity. Just take notes and then organise and link them. Thanks

    I actually went back to Notion for everything I categorize as “reference”. I used to do pretty much everything in Roam, including todo lists, recipe management, project management, and so on. Since I like to see how my thoughts are connected using the visual graph in Roam, all that clutter made the graph unusable for that, especially since there is no easy way to filter out tags.

    • @haouarino
      @haouarino 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      take a look to obsidian new graph view, it is very powerful.

    • @ShuOmi_Official
      @ShuOmi_Official  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh yeah I had the same problem with my graph - it's too messy to see anything!
      Obsidian doen have a really nice looking graph :)

    • @RamRoxillo
      @RamRoxillo 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The visual graph doesn't have a function at this moment (according to the Roam team).
      As for using Notion for references: that seems THE use case for Roam! Use queries to get the notes that you want. Obviously, for this you need to link your blocks.

  • @williamnjau3987
    @williamnjau3987 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Hi Shu 🙋🏾‍♂️. I also faced the same problem when beginning to use Roam. And for months I would just stare at the blank page staring back at me 😅. I think the major obstacle that people face, is how they are used to the high structure of most note-taking systems and apps and it's kind of weird when a note-taking app just tells you to "just start writing". But boy oh boy my life changed as soon as I discovered that that was the secret. cheers!

      @@ShuOmi_Official But it doesn't show how Roam is any different from any word processing program. I "just start writing" everyday in a Google doc. SO? I don't understand.

    Hey Shu, thanks for the video. Quick question: I see some links include hash-tag and some do not. If you want to link an idea to something else in a page, do you add the hash-tag symbol or just double brackets? I'm trying to figure out what's the best practice when it comes to this. Thanks again.

    • @ShuOmi_Official
      @ShuOmi_Official  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hey! Thank you for your comment :)
      It doesn't really matter whether you use hashtag or square brackets. They both work the same way. The only difference is how they look and # can link only one word whereas [[]] can link multiple words.
      So, it's really upto your preference which one you use!

    Nice vid, Shu, but I crawled away from Roam a couple months back, beaten and bloodied, and not sure I'm ready yet to try again. Another problem I found is that Roam is actually in constant beta [as I understand it] so things didn't always work as advertised.
    It reminds me of another software product which was equally difficult to learn: Scrivener. However, I persevered and call it one of my best tools now. I will likely try Roam again, but will wait awhile.

    Is there any difference between use of “#” and “[[ ]]” ???

    • @RobertBloom
      @RobertBloom 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      As far as I know, it just changes how the link looks visually. By the current default visual settings (which can be customized by CSS), a normal [[ ]] will present as a blue link, whereas a # will present as a gray hashtag.

    • @itsmelahi
      @itsmelahi 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      with # you can have only one word, but with [[ ]] you can have page name with more than 1 word.

    • @RamRoxillo
      @RamRoxillo 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@itsmelahi You can also combine # and [[ ]]; #[[like this]].
      @Igor The difference between tags (#) and normal links ([[ ]]) is only visual. Tags can be easily styled with CSS.

    I have no doubt Roam is useful. I just wish someone would explain in practical examples HOW it is useful. Ok write and connect. HOW? This doesn't make anymore sense than all the other tutorials. I wish someone could explain how to make it useful. How about using a daily note to teach how to use Roam? THAT might be helpful. Show how to write a couple of Roam functions and how to connect them and why you would connect them. Then when you need information in such notes later, how would you access them easily?

FURTHER, DID NOT HAVE ANY DECENT HELP BUTTON, OR EMAIL CONTACT, THERE IS NO WAY TO CONTACT THEM!!! REALLY DISAPPOINTED WITH ROAM RESEARCH .... IT DID NOT SEEM SERIOUS SOFTWARE COMPANY
