I mean to be fair, we only know Arthur and John are nothing to be fucked with because we've seen what they are capable of. To the citizens, who know nothing, they look like average cowboys. What I noticed through the npc's eyes is that John *looks* timid and uncomfortable when he tells them to politely leave and then asserts his order. His body language and tone gave off "weak". It's a cool detail the devs added so you can understand through the NPC's POV why they didn't take him seriously.
I'd be bold enough to say that Driver San Francisco had the first 2nd person gameplay prototype - that mission where you got the bad guys POV while chasing the car of the protagonist which you're steering
They really nailed John’s stature in the post game. The writing is unmatched. America is perilous to him - whether he needs to follow the rules or draw his gun, his posture and mannerisms always show discontent. He always shows conflict. He is being warped by the laws of man and the broken pendulum swing of the early American claws of civility. By the time we see him in RDR1, he is truly off the rails from being forced to play both sides of morality. God this franchise is good.

Man he looks ridiculous i hate the epilogue, they should’ve ended at Arthur’s story the epilogue is one of the reasons I’m not looking forward to playing the game again, he doesn’t just not look like john he doesn’t even talk like him this guy is written by a teenager.
@@Bugplanet8840 Arthur took a point blank double barrel shot to the shoulder, was hung upside down, beaten mercilessly, had to perform surgery on himself, had to burn the wound closed, and defeated a whole camp of o'driscolls and escaped all while having contracted tuberculosis. Not to mention he beat up a man twice his size, beat the crap pit of a healthy micah, fell off a cliff while doing it (with tuberculosis) and managed to almost kill micah. He is also way more honourable, fighting until he died just to keep everyone safe, turned people's lives around with casual conversations and never turned his back on any of his friends. And all john did was walk back to camp and tank a few gunshots.
