    I'm a little older (mid 60's) and I hope I live long enough to see this technology first hand. I believe within 5 to 10 years these will be commonplace and not so weird. I had one of the first Walkman's that played cassettes. People would look at you funny then as well.

      I'm mid 60s also and I had one of the original Walkman also. I even had a little reel to reel player when I was 8 yrs old. Now I pay with my apple watch and iphone. I love tech also. And I think in the immediate future we will see a mergence between VR & AI. Just say ur AI's name and he/she will appear ready to do your bidding.

    Just like 2007, this is the ground floor for the next phase of personal computing. I can just imagine what this product might look like in 10 years. Think about the first iPhone vs the iPhone that came out in 2017 and the ones thereafter. The smart move might be to wait for version 2 or 3 before jumping in but umm.....I'm not going to wait this time. I don't want to be in a rocking chair before I can enjoy this technology. Overpriced with very early tech notwithstanding, I may just be purchasing a gen 1 product. Although most people will be waiting for gen 2 or 3 when the headset is smaller and cheaper. Which is what Apple is already planning on.

    The introduction of the Apple Vision Pro felt like the iPhone moment for me. For the people who don't understand, the iPhone when it was announced wasn't the important part. That first one sucked, was too expensive and had missing functionality. It was the new canvas that Apple introduced to the world that was the important part. Something to be built upon. The AVP is a new canvas that Apple is giving to the world.

      I mostly agree with that. When the first iPhone came out it did have a killer app though. It was mobile Safari. Every other phone browser at the time was terrible for browsing the web. I wonder if the Apple AR headset has a similar "killer" app. Perhaps the eye tracking will be good enough to enable apps to be more efficient. No longer a need for a mouse to focus a cursor. Another possibility is if they can tap into the Method of loci / Mind palace techniques to make creative tools better. I've always imagined a 3D code editor that enabled you to visualize the connections between files better. As a programmer navigating through 20 files in a tabbed interface isn't that great. At least in my experience...
      I'm excited for the future of AR / VR, I just wonder if Apple has cracked that nut yet, so to speak.

      @@chatche Interesting comment. I like the idea of utilizing a 3D UI for the loci/mind palace technique. I'm curious to hear you elaborate more on how that might work.
      Also, I agree that Safari on iOS 1 was amazing, at least compared to the Blackberry and Palm BS we were stuck with during that time! 😂 I had a Treo 650 and I found it was easier to use a VNC app to remote in to my desktop computer and browse the web that way! After the iPhone came out, I didn't need to mess with that anymore.

    • @chatche
      @chatche ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Ryan256 For programming I could see a 3D space being super useful for debugging and visualizing the data flow through different classes / functions. Instead of stepping through a file line by line you could have the call stack color highlighted or something so that you could tell where it was called from in your field of vision. Also for method of loci to work well I think you would need somewhere to "put" the files so that your mind can remember where everything is. Like the rooms of your house never change, which is why you can walk around your house with your eyes shut pretty easily. Seems like there could be a way to tap into that same geo-spatial remembering for other knowledge based work. Just spitballing here 😀

    As someone who has watched Apple for 20+ years, I’m long term bullish on this. You’d think the people trashing the Vision with hot takes would be more humbled considering how many times Apple has proven people wrong and how baseless so many criticisms have proven in past product launches. You’d think people would give a little street cred to the company behind the Mac, PowerBook, iMac, OS X, iPod, iTunes, MacBook, iPhone, iOS, the App Store, MacBook Air, iPad, and Apple Watch. When you dismiss a stellar track record like that as irrational fandom you lose credibility IMO.
    Vision is not a direct competitor with PSVR2, Quest, etc. It is a bleeding edge mixed reality platform not just for games but personal life stuff, work, travel/remote, design, collaboration, and entertainment. It is a general computing device with a breakthrough new interface and display that nails or at least seriously addresses most of the issues holding back mixed reality systems from adoption: The performance and tracking responsiveness, display sharpness and immersion, seamless switching between AR/VR and at least taking a stab at the social isolation thing. There are potential wonders in store for the accessibility community.
    I see those digital eyeballs being weird for about 1 day and then moving on, as we have for countless other paradigms: buying digital music, keyboard-less phones, buttonless phones, large tablets, talking to digital assistants, wearing tech on the wrist and ears, drawing with digital pencils, biometric scanning of our fingerprints and face, etc.
    The core experience and user interface remind me of the quantum leap enabled not only by Multitouch hardware in 2007 but the accompanying software: gestures, finger chords, simulated physics, and generally the touch grammar of modern smartphones. The iPhone was mocked too for having no buttons and costing 3X as much as a BlackBerry.
    They all start off being mocked as being conspicuous high tech toy for Apple fanboys. The same was said of iPods, over-engineered museum pieces with giant hard drives; then 3 years later they are a fashion statement. Much the same for iPads. I distinctly remember feeling like a dweeb when I pulled out an iPad 2 on a train in 2011; now they are everywhere. The iPad was even mocked for its name. “It sounds like feminine hygiene…it should’ve been called iSlate…” Now it’s genericized and 3 year olds call every other brand of tablet an iPad. The Apple Watch was compared to watch calculators - obviously something only a nerd would wear. Niche, geeky toys for early adopters can quickly become mainstream in 1-4 years. They’re all just part of the tech landscape now.
    I would give 5:1 odds that any given person drops their skepticism the minute they try one in person, realize they can have nearly any content floating in the room at nearly any size in 3D with spatial audio.
    Yes $3,500 is a lot. But like so many previous Apple products there isn’t anything to directly compare it to - or people are comparing it to the wrong alternative. It’s expensive, yet nothing else on the market actually does the same thing at the same quality.
    Prices will drift down, more affordable and less bleeding edge models will splinter off. But to be clear, just being in this general price range, it is comparable to buying a Mac or high end display or TV. Low single digit million unit sales would still be a decent success (the first gen iPhone only sold 6 million). We should not define success as flying off the shelves in the hundreds or even tens of millions of units, just as Macs and displays (and everything except iPhones) still do not sell at that scale.
    For the first 2-3 years I see it being popular with early adopters, AV enthusiasts, designers, engineers, media content creators, executives, and people with accessibility issues. When content becomes richer, we get accustomed to seeing them, and the prices drop i could see this becoming one of those medium sized purchases you consider every few years (new TV, new Mac) and a gadget whose ownership level in the population is nowhere near universal but still socially understood - think robot vacuum, VR headset, electric car, smart home.

      @@GH0STST4RSCR34M do you know how dumb this comment sounds? I own the Nreals and I own the quest pro. The quest pro doesn’t have high enough resolution, comfort, or pass-through for any of their promises to be fulfilled. I like my quest pro, but it’s kind of a gimmick. I also like my in real glasses, but they’re really just displays that get tracked with 3° or 6° of freedom - they are not really augmented reality and they are not really mixed reality or virtual reality. this headset does everything better than Varjo’s best headset that costs 7k - while being a standalone computational device. Stop being a hater. It’s a bad look.

    • @JungleMU
      @JungleMU ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I agree with your take. I see a lot of people failing to understand just how much more advanced this is compared to something like the Quest Pro.
      The Quest Pros colour pass-through is grainy, lacks depth, has janky colour and warps. Apples however is crisp and clean, has brilliant occlusion for hands when above digital screens an no visible warps.
      The fact that the demos we saw from inside the Vision Pro at WWDC, is footage captured from inside the headset, shows people everything. If you look at pass-through footage of the Quest Pro, Apples headset blows it out of the water by miles.
      It's very easy for people to look at the price, and call it "expensive", which it is. But "not worth it" I disagree with. It is 100% worth the price for the tech you are getting. Plus, if you use VR for games, the Vision Pro is not for you. The Vision Pro is meant for Media Consumption, Productivity and Connectivity.
      We saw this exact thing with Apples Pro XDR Display. Crazy expensive, however an absolute bargain for the specs compared to other similar displays.
      I've already decided I'm getting one, and once they show more stuff this headset can do I'm gonna be even more excited.

It usually takes v.3 (v.2 in the case of the iPad) to live up to its basic potential. That would make the M4/R3 model the one to watch for. But you seem to have no reservations? As someone who is all in on the Apple ecosystem and an APPL shareholder, I watched the WWDC keynote with some trepidation, as I didn't see how another headset could be all that exciting. When it was over, I still wasn't sure what to think. It took me a while to digest just how different and capable this device is.
    VP has been years in the making, and it shows. While the keynote did a good job of presenting this thing, Dan's (@MacRumors) review confirmed my feeling that this is the beginning of a major shift in the computing paradigm. Spatial computing seems an apt description.
    I appreciate the genuine enthusiasm Dan brings to this initial review and I am really looking forward to trying it. In spite of the price, I think Apple has taken quite a large step forward by developing this platform.

      Because part of the processing power goes to create the AR experience, it means it’s not gonna be able to run apps as well as a M2 Mac. i.e, I think we can forget Final Cut Pro running natively on the headset. We’re just gonna be able to virtualize a Mac screen running FCP, hence using the Mac’s computing power to run the app.

    Thanks for the great review.. I am excited to know that the sound is so great, especially that it puts out good bass. I hope it mimics the Dolby Atmos that I get through my AppleTV and my 11.2 sound system setup. I assume you could use the Air Play for the sound to your AppleTV and have the sound go through your receiver set-up ? On my AppleTV app on my AppleTV box, I can select shows/movies, etc. from my other streaming services, like Netflix, Prime, etc. Will those still work on the AppleTV App on the Vision Pro ? Netflix has a good selection of Dolby Vision/Atmos movies that I would hate to loose. Anyway, I can't wait for Vision Pro to come out for sale. I will be on top of it ASAP after you can buy them in the Apple Online store or at my local Apple Store. CHEERS.
