    I still can't quite fathom how all the trash is able to get that deep into the crack. Wouldn't most of it accumulate at the first sharp bend and then get significantly less?

    • @EvenDarker
      @EvenDarker  ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I think wind and rain account for a lot of it barreling all the way to the bottom. But I really can't figure it out either I've seen trash around many corners. It seems to be able to work itself anywhere underground. I once dug into an area and found trash. No idea how I got there except that it seems to be able to tumble its way through every possible crack.

    • @EvenDarker
      @EvenDarker  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      We are part of the cave group which is assigned locating, navigating and mapping all the caves in a certain area.
      This one hadn't been looked through since the sixties and we didn't know it's location. It was our assignment to find it and take a look. Which is what we did. What's interesting is even in the report in the sixties it was full of trash and deemed dangerous. Which continues to be exactly the case but now there's a good map a good location and a public warning not to enter.

    I am too old and to fat for caving. I did a few small caves when I was younger in the 70's, but nothing crazy. Tents lining the streets on the way there and homeless garbage even in the caves. Let me guess, is this California , Washington or Oregon? Kind of sad. We have one homeless tent guy in our town now. I think he is one of the illegal invaders Biden let in. I'm sure there will be more to come.... Anyway, cool cave, cool video. Thanks.

      You know I went to college on the hill where these caves are located. This was 20 years ago. It was clean streets, lots of businesses thriving.
      Now the streets are littered with camps,fires in the street... over half the businesses are just gone. This area is now overran by prostitution and drugs.
      I recently have been to several places in California including San Francisco... and nothing is remotely as dirty and overwhelmed by crime as Portland Oregon.
      I have no idea what the solution is. But the problem is very bad.

    When I was a kid… ‘cause stuff happens in childhood that must be lived through in order to look back in advancing adulthood… my family returned from some outing to find a fire truck in from of the house of neighbor friends. My brother was tasked with finding out what was up; returning to say that a member of the family was stuck - presumably face-down - in the hallway laundry chute which terminated in a basket in the basement…. Yep!
    It seems that our young neighbor and another, thinner…neighbor had decided to ride the laundry chute from the second floor into the basement… - Sounds Fun, Right?!?! - and the first kid made it… and the more slightly portly kid got STUCK!!
    Firefighters had to chop open the wall to access the neighbor kid whose father was definitely NOT pleased… No one was physically hurt, but I expect there were a few extra weeks of extra yard chores in order to pay for the repairs….
    Oh, in the case of that family, DEFINITELY!!
    This was an object lesson to every kid in that neighborhood, myself included, not that it kept us totally out of trouble…
    Headfirst in the downchute. STUCK having FUN!!

    How do the glass bottles drop all the way down and not break so deep in the cave?

    • @EvenDarker
      @EvenDarker  ปีที่แล้ว

      That's a good question I suspect they just get tossed in the entrance and if for rain or wind or because of animals they make the big drop to the bottom they just hit the other pile of trash. At the bottom of the pile of trash they're probably is broken bottles.
      And also bottles aren't that easy to break.

    Is there a difference from using the 'webbing ' and a strap, ratchet-strap? Just curious

    • @EvenDarker
      @EvenDarker  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great question. Not really. But the webbing is tested and officially "rated" since it is life dependent gear. But it's generally not more expensive so it's what you would want to use if you were climbing.
      Flat weave straps are stronger than rope. But doesn't work very well with gear. So the webbing is generally reserved for harnesses or connecting ropes to secure objects.
      But in theory you could literally use a ratchet strap to ascend or descend. It would just be slightly less convenient.

    Well, I’d have to agree with you…this cave was indeed filthy. Between the human element of added trash and the vacuum like effect that the entryway can hold, drawing some other trash in, it really is nasty. The trash I can handle, but syringes are different story. Walking on those is no big deal, with the right shoes, but if I had to crawl, I simply wouldn’t. One wrong prick and all of a sudden you find yourself with some really nasty disease.
    Another noted difference is that a majority of cave excursions you take are in erosion caves, not cracks like this one. Interesting to see you STANDING UP so much but no less (severely) cramped😉
    Still, another great video. I had missed this one so circled back for it. Thank you, as always, not just for filming but for the fabulous edit. That takes a ton of time, and I certainly appreciate it.
    Mike

    • @EvenDarker
      @EvenDarker  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      We mostly do stand up caves. Big beautiful walk through caves. But if I make a video of it, it... Essentially gets ignored. So you get to see the crawley bits.
      In any case, these caves with the garbage in them are probably the most dangerous stuff we've done because of the garbage and needles. But they are in the lowlands, so the temperatures are a little more comfortable. Most of the caves in the mountains are just about freezing.

      This is in the dead center of a large metropolitan area. There are high rises all around. It's just that here in the Pacific Northwest there's also a lot of trees and the parks are well hid.
      There's a large homeless community that lives around these caves. They have all the soup kitchens and activity from the downtown area then they can just go sleep in the park.

      I don't remember this video at all and I can't look at timestamps from the comment second.
      But it's probably tree roots. This cave is huge crack on the edge of a mountain. So it's very deep but all the way down. We're only like 30 feet from the outside of the mountain. I remember there was lots of tree roots webbing their way through.
      I don't remember anything that was like a pipe. So I imagine it's just a big root.
