  • Published in Paris in 1949, The Second Sex by Simone de Beauvoir is considered the most important feminist work of the 20th century. As the edition with which we have worked here points out, everything that has been written since in this field has had to rely on this essay, either to continue it and continue developing its postulates, or to criticize them, opposing them. .
The work is divided into two large parts: the first analyzes the historical and cultural construction of "femininity", from the analysis of biological data, the psychoanalytic point of view, the point of view of historical materialism, history and the myths, in relation to the "eternal feminine". While the second part explores the current situation of women and the possibilities of their liberation.
In this video we go through the first part, entitled "The facts and the myths", in which, both in his Introduction and in his first two sections, entitled "Fate" and "History", Beauvoir challenges common ideas about women and their position in the world.
The author analyzes here the historical and cultural facts that have led women to their situation of subordination in front of men, based on their characteristic reproductive function of the species, to which has been associated, almost without exception in history, the allocation of domestic chores, most of the time without other possibilities to access their personal growth.
So the sections covered here are:
    0:00 General presentation
0:04:52 Intro to "The Facts and Myths"
0:15:18 Fate- Cap I: The data of biology
0:20:54 Fate- Cap II: The psychoanalytic point of view
0:26:00 Fate- Cap III: The point of view of historical materialism
    0:33:35 History (I)
    0:37:36 History (II)
    0:41:34 History (III)
    0:46:14 History (IV)
    0:55:31 History (V)
In a second video about this first part, in which the "Myths" section (with which this first part of the book closes) will be presented independently, the author will highlight how cultural beliefs and stereotypes about femininity and masculinity They have been used, in his opinion, to justify the situation of subordination that has always characterized women.
