    In March 2020 our family were counting down the weeks to our long planned pilgrimage of the Camino de Santiago. Enter a worldwide pandemic and like millions or others our travel plans were halted, we thought for ever.
    They say no two roads to the Camino are the same and while we were still processing the disappointment of 2020 the planets aligned and 2022 became our year.
    So in July 2022 our family set out from South Australia and made our way via Paris to St Jean Pied de Port to commence our long awaited Camino Frances. It was the best decision we made to do this as a family and if you are thinking about it I can’t recommend it highly enough.
    We hope you enjoy this little video of our time on the the Camino Frances through to Fisterra.
    Gear video and budget coming soon!
    Thanks for watching,
    Claire, Callum, Molly and Jethro

    I love this Video. When I first saw it was 55 mins long I thought I would never get through it. The opposite was the case, not only did I watch it in one go I went back and watched most of it again. It captures the scenery, the camaraderie and the reason people would walk close to 1,000km and be sad when it is over. Great Video.

      Thank you Peter!! We are certainly missing our pilgrim family and had such a wonderful time! There are lots of reasons to walk the 1000km but we though the people was the best reason of all ✌️💛💙

    I have just finished watching all the Camino journey. I stopped inside the first few minutes of this video because I am overwhelmed with a feeling of being both humbled and feeling absolutely inadequate. Your whole family achieved something special. And you gave me the gift of a valuable heads-up. When I walk the Camino I'll make sure I pack a folding toilet seat and a pop-up toilet tent. ( I'm not risking running a gauntlet of the poo-mined grassy areas of the Way. I like having white shoes too much. I didn't realise that you had walked in Scotland - I live in Edinburgh ( someone has to). So I'll watch more of your videos later . So thank you for making my day comfortable; made it feel worthwhile, too.

¡BUEN CAMINO! Saludos cordiales desde Barcelona.

    I hope the teens appreciated the journey in the end. They seemed to complain about being there and I felt that they didn't want to do this, and were forced to do it. It's not their idea of vacation or fun. Maybe they are not ready for enlightenment because they haven't lived a longer life. Hoping for a better additude in the end and a feeling of accomplishment and awakening. It was a beautiful thought to bring the teens along as long as they didn't stop you from completing your purpose. I would have loved to have this opportunity in my teens.

      I agree...if I were on this hike, I wouldn't be on a cellphone. I would attach a GoPro to capture the views. I would still carry a cellphone for emergencies, but I would want to disconnect and just walk, feel my surroundings, breathe the air, smell the air and allow all my senses to truly engage in this experience.

    Especially because of covid, I wouldn't want to share any toiletries with a few hundred people. I would definitely carry my own wipes. It's bad enough that some places have bed bugs. I imagine they get into your belongings and people carry them from bed to bed. Enjoying your journey and hoping the end was purposeful to all even if everyone experienced something that is personal to themselves.

      Thank you for your comment 😊 I think each persons Camino is different, for some Galicia and Santiago are the ultimate but for us the journey was of more significance than the final destination. It was the people we met and the bonding we did as a family for the 650km or so leading into this final beautiful stretch that impacted us the most. Also Callum became very unwell from Gonzar to Melide so filming was put to one side for this time. You might see more of this in my daily vlogs which I am putting out at the moment✌️💙💛

    I really enjoyed your video. Such a great job and I am sure helping you relive your adventure. I know on these trips the days can blur into one another and filming is a great way to jog the memory. I have 3 questions. 1) Which camera did you use, 2) did you have a specific blister management strategy to avoid them and 3)what was the handy mesh bag you had on the back of your packs? Loved it, thanks for sharing. Cheers, Pete

    • @callumclairesadventures8793
      @callumclairesadventures8793  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Pete, thank you! We love having this video to look back on to remember our journey 😊 in answer to your questions 1) we mostly used a GoPro 10-I lost our GoPro 9 with the media mod microphone in Singapore airport on the way over and we had to buy a new one 😞 Sadly we couldn’t find the media mod microphone anywhere so some of our footage is effected by the wind! I also used my iPhone 13 Pro for some clips but not many. 2) we wore Brooks Cascadia trail runners that are breathable in sizes 1-1.5 too big for us and smartwool socks. We also stop if we feel a hot spot before it turns into a blister to cover it…although this trip I don’t think any of us even got a hit spot from me worry. We’ve never had a blister hiking using this method. 3) the mesh pocket was part of our backpacks. We use ZPacks Arc Haul bags and love them. Ultra light, ultra durable and functional. We’ve put about 2000km on our bags and they are still going strong! Molly and I just used day bags from Deuter and they worked well for this type of hike. Jethro used my Zpacks bag and callum had his own. Hope this helps! ✌️💙💛

    Glad another Aussie made it! I think there were a lot of us there. Like you I was delayed from a may 2020 to May 2022 for the Norte. It was good to get into to Santiago but must admit that Fisterra was more emotional. It was the true end for me. When I was there is was a great sunny day so went around the Farro and threw my stone with the hope it made the Atlantic. The view from the small hill above the Farro was spectacular.

      Yes!! Out first night in Orisson there were 9 Aussies out of about 25 people! 😋 Fisterra was my true finish point as well as evident by the tears. Sadly for us it was a total white out all day. But we had sunshine over the Pyrenees which I know lots of people don’t get so we still did pretty well for magnificent views. Thanks for watching! ✌️💙💛

    Thank you Callum and Claire's Adventures for sharing your beautiful journey. I'd sincerely appreciate your thoughts: To what extent do you think wild camping or camping in campgrounds is possible on the Camino Frances? My partner and I are experienced lightweight backpackers and already have our gear and would enjoy being able to camp part of the time and to occasionally stay in albergues and hotels. And do you think it would it be possible to do this while still meeting up with new friends for meals in town? We've also heard horror stories about how noisy some of the albergues can be at night, making it impossible to sleep, so that a tent for a good part of the time seems even more attractive (would you agree)?

      Thank you Leigh 🙏 During our little journey we didn’t see anyone camping, I have heard of some people doing it but I think it may be illegal to camp along most sections of the frances? But I could be wrong on this 😊 I do think you may miss a lot of the pilgrim experience if you camped but it also depends on what experience you are looking for. We found our bonds with other pilgrims really strengthened along the Meseta in the albergues over meals at night. In terms of noisy pilgrims and sleeping in albergues it was not too much of an issue for us. We had a couple of nights where people were up early and a bit noisy but overall it didn’t bother us. We used earplugs at night when needed and booked the occasional private room. We love nature hiking and camping too but I think on this hike in particular you may miss out on the pilgrim community experience. But if it is legal and it is your preferred way to hike I would say go for it 💙💛✌️

      @@callumclairesadventures8793 Thank you very much. Your personal experience matters much more than any quick comment in a guide book or forum and I really appreciate you sharing it. Also wondering about the cost of private rooms for 2 in an albergue, government guest house or modest hotel versus the cost of 2 people staying in your average albergue. If we don't take our camping gear we'd love to know we have the option of a quiet room if loud noise is a consistent problem (especially hearing that the Camino Frances is becoming more and more popular).

      Thanks Annie 😊 the weather was hot (between 30-38 Celsius) but it didn’t seem to get too hot until after lunch so we tried to get up early and beat the heat. We only stayed in one albergue with a fan though so nights can be 🥵. We spent on average €120 per day for the four of us (€30pp) I’ll do a full break down on our budget and gear in an upcoming video too. I’ll update the list in the notes section to include the albergues next to each section in the next couple of days✌️💙💛

      Hi Jose, we left SJPDP on 23 July and finished in Fisterra 31 August. There weren’t many pilgrims until we hit Sarria. We walked in a bubble of about 30-35 for most of our Camino. We spoke to a few local French people early in our Camino who said the predicted heat wave had kept numbers down during the week we left. It was between 35-40 degrees Celsius for most of our first week but we missed the really hot day when we were up in the Pyrenees as it was only 32 degrees up there. I don’t like filming other people without their permission so tried to keep the camera only on our family as well 😊✌️💙💛

    I have dreamed of doing this with a small group. I am not sure if I am in the right physical condition to do it. These people look young and capable for the challenge. I still believe that as long as you don't have medical ailments and are relatively healthy, you might be able to do this hike. I had covid in early March 2020, and still get winded. Wondering if this will limit my ability to start and finish. What's the shortest route or what challenge is appropriate for me...

    • @callumclairesadventures8793
      @callumclairesadventures8793  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Amelia, from my experience you don’t need to be fit or young to walk a Camino 😊 We saw lots of people with very different fitness levels. One pilgrim we met had “long COVID” and went very slowly but still managed to do 20km a day before dinner time. There are also buses and transport you could use between towns if you needed to, or you can send your bag ahead to the next town to reduce the weight you have to carry for the day making it a bit easier. There are some strenuous hill climbs but most of it was quite flat and easy to do. You could do a section of the Frances, we met lots of people who just did Burgos to Leon or Leon to Santiago ✌️💙💛

    • @callumclairesadventures8793
      @callumclairesadventures8793  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you!!💙💛 How exciting 2024 😀 we spent a week in Paris to help us get over jet lag and explore the city a bit. Then we caught the train from Gare Montparnasse to Bayonne and Bayonne to SJPDP…but this was booked as one ticket. When we went they overbooked the train from Bayonne to SJPDP so they put the extras into a bus to SJPDP. We thankfully got the train which was much nicer. My favourite albergue was in San Nicholas along the Meseta. We had a great shared meal, the albergue was quaint and we were so comfortable we all accidentally slept in the next morning. I wish you a Buen Camino! ✌️

      We used nearly all euro cash in notes as it was easier to manage our budget that way. We had a daily budget of 30Euro pp so for our family of 4 it was 120 euro per day. We withdrew it weekly and kept in a money belt. This was the perfect amount and we finished right on budget. Since covid, credit and debit cards are accepted at a lot of places now but we found cash easier. 💛💙✌️
