thats actually consistent with WOFF lore apparently every summon is actually a different species of monster, which explains why there is more than 1 shiva running around thanks to snow. so that means every iteration of FF has a unique version and they can all coexist in this world. And just like any animal or monster there can be girl and guy versions

looks like it doesnt, since in ff4 it was the king of eidolons, and its human form was a king, but here its a female, I dont rememeber if leviathan was any other time called by a gender
Dislike that fact that Levianthan is female here... ._. Saw it as a "he" throughout the years of playing the FF series. I mean, heck, some of the descriptions of Levianthan state it as a "he"!

The gender of Leviathan doesn't really bother me since it's not like the design would have changed. Male or female they probably would have gone with this design. It's not the same as changing Ramuh to female, Shiva to male, or things like that.
First time i've seen Leviathan depicted as female but not complaining. The VA is pretty cool.

I think most are male. Or at least originally Leviathan was male (Final Fantasy 4).
