    The really magical fantasy stories in Thorgal are always in DREAMS or other states of subconsciousness. As I read it, the main story, you can interpret it like a non magical world. (Thorgal and his kids do indeed have strange powers, but that is because they have the genes of the Star People (not from the future, but more like advanced humans from the past (Atlantis) and somehow those 'advance humans' developed those powers. (bogus science fiction, I know, but it's a way to look at Thorgal's world without involving Wizardy and Witchcraft

      I agree ... and even more so: I try to develop a somehow more open mind towards these tropes... reading Thorgal is just a lot more fun that way :)

    Thorgal is very good, and my favourite comic. You should read the lord of the mountain.

      that's the timetravel story, isn't it, yes, that's a particular good one.

    I completely agree with your end assessment. I just read first hc book and am kind of disappointed because I had wrong expectations. It's a good comic, beautifully drawn but it is, as you said, for pre-puberty kids, just around 12.

      hä? there has to be a misunderstanding, never said or meant anything like that!!! I regard Thorgal very highly … okay it‘s suited for all ages buuuut you will understand a lot more of it if you‘re older.

      I remember you mentioned once that English translation could be censored. I was a good student and fast reader yet I wasn't allowed to read Thorgal because I was not suitable for kids under 12 years old....
      I spent lots of hours helping in that particular library until they gave up and let me read it 😁
      I read it later on too, many times. I would agree it's more for teenagers.

    cosey, rosinski, corben - you are really heading the classic route now... and I couldn't be more excited. I had no idea you weren't into thorgal before.
    check out the chninkel (Die große Macht des kleinen Schninkel) - It's among my favorite comics!

    I've got one thorgal book, 'guardians of the keys', I liked the colours. first 3 pages were the best with the red eyed woman. was it in heavy metal too?

    • @earlgrey862
      @earlgrey862  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      that's one of the more fantasyish out-there stories ... I doubt that Thorgal ever appeared in Metal Hurlant or Heavy Metal

      Thorgal was published in the Tintin magazine.

    I like mystical stuff and sound science (non political) future stuff.
    Don't know if I would like Thorgal or not. I did enjoy the astrix stuff though.

      hmm, Asterix is a really different comic, but I guess you only can find out if you like it when you read an album or two.

    Thorgal was my favourite escapist series as a young teen. Great series. About the Chninkel, maybe if you refuse to see it as fantasy, but see it as a parody of the bible (which it is) you could appreciate it? It's a strange thing to have an aversion of an entire style of setting (fantasy). I mean, if a comic is good it's good, isn't it? The Chninkel is still definately fantasy-like though, so maybe it's just not for you.

    • @earlgrey862
      @earlgrey862  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      ah, actually it's not Fantasy in general, just a certain type of it, the more "esoteric" kind... and even there I would make a lot of exceptions ... "if a comic is good it's good" - true words, for sure.
      And a parody of the bible? I guess that's exactly the last hook I needed... watch out for my Schninkel/Chninkel panellogy :))

      Just now started reading another classic series written by Jean Van Hamme, called Les Maîtres de l'orge (the masters of the barley). In case you're not familiar, it's about several generations of a Belgian family of beer brewers and their scheming and romances et cetera. Very cool concept.

      yes thanks, there's even a german translation of that one... had it in my hands in the comic shop once or twice... but I haven't bought it (yet)

    Which Thorgal episode is your favorite?

    • @earlgrey862
      @earlgrey862  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      that's a tough question ... esp. since I've read most of the albums only once yet. But generally I prefer the stories that aren't too stuffed with mysticism.

    • @piotrb8434
      @piotrb8434 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Surprising answer... I always thought that mysticism is part of the appeal. I remember when I was in primary school all the kids thought The Archers is the best part. The Three Elders Of Aran, Wolf Cub and Alinoe are really creepy. I like The Master Of The Mountains.

    The Chninkel is not the greatest bd ever, but I do have a soft spot for it and usually say it's my favorite. Indeed an alegory to the bible, with some LOTR and 2001 Space Odissey thrown in, but overall very visually imaginative and featuring the most miserable protagonist ever. Maybe a full hit or miss.

    Awesome that you changed your mind about Thorgal! Like you, I was also totally not interested in Thorgal for years. Until I finally caved in to the positive vibe from its fans. And boy did I love it!
    Also try the color version of "Der Schninkel" by the same team. According to some people the best comic ever made. And I think they have a point.

    • @earlgrey862

      ahja, that Schninkel-book ... I can't recall what I didn't like about that one... I just skimmed through some pages in the shop though... I think it's just that I don't like these 100% fantasy titles too much, all these characters with felthats and hairy feet give me the shivers - but I almost would bet that I'll change my mind on Schninkel (or however that name was written) as well

      ... crazy as in: having read all the books (even these grammar and vocabulary stuff of that Elblanguage), knowing all the movies by heart and throwing in some Tolkienquotes when they seem fit or not... that kinda crazy!
