This game was submitted to Ocean Software for possible release. I remember loading it up before it came out on the Firebird label as I'd found the tape lying around. Obviously, Ocean turned it down. And "Dang my Poons" was something Simon Butler used to say in the dungeons at Ocean!
It's got the foundation of SOMETHING, it just needs more structure in the ruleset for it to be something that isn't just completely random dice rolls. Maybe even the ability to lock dice for a later turn, or an ability to govern where enemies move... Literally ANYTHING else.
I had a thoughtful, insightful comment here to write.... then "Well dang my poons!" happened and my brain kinda just.... blacked out there. I don't really know how to go on now. Gonna need a minute...
4:19 - WELL DANG MY POONS! lyrics (please correct me if I'm wrong):
WELL DANG MY POONS!
WELL DANG MY POONS!
WELL DANG MY POONS!
WELL DANG MY POONS!
WELL DANG MY POONS, baby!
YOU DID IT!
I said DANG MY POONS, baby!
YOU DID IT!
Well dang my poons...
You did it!
Well, Scrabble, Chess and Backgammon made it on to the Spectrum. All board games and one of them used Dice. I think they even managed a version of Monopoly on the Spectrum.
However, turn-based strategy games are really the descendants of board games on computers. There was even a version of Battleships that was quite fun on the Speccy.
Mind you, creating a board game that grabs attention and plays well is really quite hard. Then transferring that to a computer and making it interesting, and fun is another challenge.
Trivial Pursuit on the Spectrum didn't really work.
I really enjoyed working with John Gibson on the game Colony Wars for PS1 in the 90s, at Psygnosis, in Liverpool.
He also made Zzoom and Stonkers, games I thought were really cool, back when he had worked at Imagine.
He never mentioned this game though :)
Maybe you could review Stonkers, or Zzoom, you probably played them as a kid as I think they were the bundle in games with the Spectrum, at one period, maybe bundled with the Soectrum+
I think I had Stonkers, not sure on Zzoom, both games that I'll eventually get round to though I'm sure!
@@RoseTintedSpectrum Zzoom is (was?) great. Stonkers has a game-breaking bug. His other Imagine game is Molar Maul.
I think Stonkers was arguably the first RTS.
@@steve16384 I was thinking about that as well. It must have been one of the first if not the very first right? I think there was a bug as well wasn't there, something to do with crossing the bridge in a particular way could cause it to crash.
Good stuff ❤ still waiting for videos on Gandalf, Manic Pietro and Get Out of Mars by Noentiendo before he releases his upcoming Ninja Turtles game! 🎉
The three above are the best Speccy Metroidvania, Manic Style & Console Style Platformers so high hopes for Ninja Turtles. They also use magic to cheat the colour limits!
Im gonna keep asking for these 😂❤
Noentiendo isnt well known in the homebrew scene but his games are absolutely fantastic.
I kneel down. Then I lean forward and place my palms on the ground, fingers forward, slightly further apart than my shoulders. Then i push forwards with my feet. That's how i roll.
Crash - 32%
Your Sinclair - 9/10
Lawks. Firebird must have spent a lot on advertising at YS that month.
I worked with John Gibson; he was a top bloke. Unfortunately no longer with us :(
I don't remember this game on the Speccy but I DO know that Gibbo remade it for Android following his retirement. I have a copy of the .apk that he asked me to test for him. It's old though so it no longer works due to 'security' issues.
I enjoyed the remake but I don't think he ever released it.
That's a shame - a few tweaks and it would make something decent for sure
It makes me think of that tedious school 'project' where you 'design' a board game.
Sounds fun
@@arostwocents It's not. Weeks of colouring in and it turns out you've produced a new variant of ludo
Can we a agree it's a lovely font though? Looks like the same one used in Cosmic Wartoad.
Andy Cranes on Greatest Hits Radio and hes more Andy Crane than ever!
He is, I've seen a few clips and he has somehow distilled his essence as a liquid, and he knocks a couple of shots of Andy Crane before he goes live as Andy Crane.
@@RoseTintedSpectrum He's cheesier than a Wotsits factory.
There is a film called Spaced Out and it's cheesy but DEFINITELY not boring.😂
Who needs gameplay when you can use
10 print RND
20 go to 10
SYNTAX ERROR LINE 20: “go to” NO SUCH KEYWORD
Dang my danging dangpoons, it took SO many dice throws to get to the end of this video.
Well dang my poons!
I'll just wait for the inevitable remastered version to try this.

I just want to point out .. the "blue men" are definitely turquoise, and the "purple dot" is most definitely pink.
You could explain the rules multiple times and still wouldn’t have the will power to pay attention.
I think he was trying to make the next Tetris, but didn’t have the element of fun and addictiveness.
Also cool kettle
I got to this post and realised I have no memory of the explanation of the rules 😂😂😂❤
@@arostwocents clearly Dave did a bad job of explaining it, he should’ve of used flashing lights and sexy stock footage
I assume I'll be able to buy the Dang My Poons single (with B-side remix) from my local Our Price shortly? Have you got a release date?
Seriously though I could listen to that all day
Brilliant ending.
Poons aside, the movement animation in this is kinda superb
Knocked one out to this. Cheers mate.
Not sure what meaning it may hold across the pond there, but saying 'poon' over here is liable to earn you a mouthful of soap 🤣
WELL DANG MY POONS! This will never not amuse me.
Im going to get "dang my poons" into my morning meeting at work somehow....
holy shit that Ludo board game looks like a freakin swastika
Well dang my poons if we don't own identical tea caddies...
Another brilliant ending!
Well i remember the box art, sure i had it but i have no memory of this whatsoever. Probably best.
You may well have played it 1,000 times and still have no memory of it, because it's the gaming equivalent of a glass of water.
Milk first? Well dang my poons! That’s not the correct order!
T'was a coffee - you add the milk first to avoid burning the coffee flavoured nuggets.
@@RoseTintedSpectrum actually, that's making more sense now. Damn you, Crane!
If by boring you mean awesome then yes! :-)
0:00 "I've Got a Theory on this one" Is it a....
Game Theory?
Who the heck made you a "well dang my poons" song?! 😂
T'was the power of AI, I just dumped the lyrics in
@@RoseTintedSpectrum finally a good use for AI 😄 great video, laughed my pants off
I have come to make John Carpenter quotes and dang poons, and I'm all out of John Carpenter quotes
Where did you get the Dang my poons song from lol!?
AI generated with lyrics I plopped in there
Some music AI.
How do the mini games feature? I am still none the wiser as to what this game is about, that means i have to play it now.
So the mini-games aren't in THIS one, those are in Cosmic Wartoad. They've sort of taken the board game concept from that game and removed the minigames to try and make a solid game... But... They just sort of made a thing that happens in front of you.
@@RoseTintedSpectrum oh that was the whole game... erm oh... ok yeah its rubbish.
no wonder I haven't heard about this one
You look like Will Champion 🥁
This is a new one for me, and having checked, I can confirm that I will put him in the backlog with Olly Murs, Daniel Bedingfield and Gary Barlow.
YS gave this 9/10! (the game, not your video, although I'm sure they would have done if they reviewed it).
Andy Crane woz ere
Well Dang my poons 😂😂😂
what's all this lame-poonery then? 😊
your video edits crack me up every time by the way lol.. love it
We had a LOT of time to waste in the 80s .... god I'm old
Hahahahahaha.
Rematch that you poons
It seems quite unethical actually, to produce software (of any kind) for sale that's completely disinteresting.
Not that I'm unhappy that independent people actually produced their own titles - that was an AMAZING aspect of software distribution in this country.
But when the games/utilities/business software (maybe you could review some of that some time? It's a really untapped source of entertainment I believe) is so dull and uneventful, why go out of your way to even put it out there???
Where's the enthusiasm??
Be a little better with big mac's on the screen with weight watches with toilet in the Corner.
Actual first
Did you just put the milk in first? Unsubscribe!
On second glance it looked like coffee not tea, phew
