  • Today we have part four of our John Frusciante Returns series. This is the latest installment of Rick Rubin’s on-going series of in-depth interviews with the Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist. And if this is the first interview you’re hearing, make sure to go back and check out the first three parts.
On this episode we’ll hear John Frusciante play through more of his guitar parts, and he’ll explain how he came up with some of the best guitar melodies in modern rock history. John also talks about how playing along to classic heavy metal albums from Black Sabbath and Van Halen, as well as dancing all night at drum and bass clubs helped shape his style on the 2002 album, By The Way. He also explains how listening to Brandy, Destiny’s Child and Wu-Tang Clan helped influence his playing on Stadium Arcadium.

    ABOUT BROKEN RECORD
For generations of music lovers, the liner notes on albums were a central part of the way music was heard. You bought an album and it came with an accompanying narrative: a digression, an aside, a backstory-maybe even an invented history. We intuitively understood that great music required not just listening but conversation between the artist and the audience and the audience and the rest of the world.
Broken Record is a podcast that restarts those conversations-in a world without liner notes-for a new audience of music lovers.
Broken Record is hosted by Justin Richmond with interviews by producer Rick Rubin, writer Malcolm Gladwell, and former New York Times editor Bruce Headlam.

This is such a great idea, mostly for music lovers and John Frusciante fans, but also for John himself. On a historical level he's one of the best musicians of the 20th and 21st centuries and deserves to be documented and understood like this. And as it's very often the case, they were wrong. It's actually a Flea song. We now know that John didn't even want to use synths or drum machines on the new albums. Fans and critics think they know what's going on and who wrote what but they're often wrong about these things when they're just guessing.

This series with John is such a beautiful gift and I can’t thank everyone involved enough for sharing it with us❤. Y’all are incredible, and I am beyond appreciative🙏. I’ve always valued Frusciante’s insight and perspective so highly, so please know that there’s absolutely a want and a gratitude for as many of these as y’all are willing to put out! Rick’s naturally a very thoughtful and generous interviewer, so combining that with a preexisting relationship that stretches back decades at this point is just🤌 chefs kiss, beautiful work!

Listening to their conversations is a great pleasure, it's like an opportunity to find out for yourself how something as beautiful as RHCP music is made. This is a real treasure.

This Frusciante series is the most fascinating I’ve heard of any musical conversation. The way John describes and demos Venice Queen, I was as surprised as Rick being fascinated by the rhythm against the chords. It reminds me most of Richie Havens, who has one of the most simple chording styles, but a griot rhythm that’s otherworldly. The surf style reminded me of a local DC band back in the 80’s, the Insect Surfers, whose music I revisited lately. Check them out, it’s a very sophisticated surf sound.

This is pure gold. John is so open and speaking his mind. We just don’t get that so often. No criticism though! Just want him to be happy.

Wow I never realised the rhythm for the Venice Queen outro was inspired by Jungle, cannot unhear the amen break now lmao

It would be great if we can have a episode about John's solo career, explaining how he made songs like CARVEL, WATER, there's some really sophisticated harmony. John can try to play 1 of his song on RHCP setlist like '99 when the band played a snippet of Untitled #2 sometimes, and he will satisfy all fans
