    Years ago a couple of HVAC pro's told me that if there are no markings on old motors the rule of thumb is roughly 15 MFDs per unit tons which also roughly equals to one HP per unit ton. Check LRA and RLA on a fully charged system. The running load amps can give you a pretty good idea of HP size for a capacitor. Never had this problem but always stuck in my mind.

    Jay, been a devoted student to your channel for the past 2 weeks. You are so good at using simple terms. THANK YOU! I have 2 capacitors in my AC unit. 55 uF and 5 uF. Since the fan capacitor is bad, and the other one is warped, would it be wise to replace the 2 capacitors with one 3 prong that's 50/5 MFD or just stick with original 2 capacitor? It does have a yellow cable connecting the 2. Great timing on this video, cause the fan capacitor was electrical tape where it melted into the product. Thanks again!

    My AC experience in case it will help someone with similar experience: Both the fan and compressor would not turn on. Thru watching these videos and hearing the capacitor often goes I put in a new one but the AC would still not turn on!! Checked the contactor but it looked fine and when I'd turn the AC on the plunger did go in which says it was getting power, just not enough. I ended up calling a repairman who on the phone walked me thru some steps to check...turns out when the capacitor dies it blows the two fuses that are in the box attached to the house! A run to Lowes and $14 later, install the new fuses and BINGO! AC back on! Good luck everyone.

      Karen, thanks for sharing your experience with us! I am trying to figure out where to look for those fuses your are talking about. Are they near the disconnect, near the outside condensor unit, Or, inside the panel where the evaporator coil and the plenum are located up in the attic? Or are you talking about the two breakers at the breaker panel?

    Need help/ advice:
    To start with thank you for uploading so useful videos on AC n Furnaces on youtube. they are great to understand what's going inside those machines in case of any problem. they are really really great. thank you for all your efforts.
    I need some help/ advice from you.
    I came across your videos as I was searching my AC problem.
    - My AC is not throwing cold air in the vents. When I switch it on I get normal temperature air from vent.
    - Based on your videos I changed the new filter.
    - Checked the thermostat, didnt see much issue with that. My AC is about 15 yrs old. (Model: York ac H1ra042s06d).
    1) My first thought was freon might be low and when asked for quotes they said R22 is about $200 / lb. :(. Then seeing more of your videos, I thought it might be just capacitor issue (just change it) but wasnt sure how to pinpoint the problem - if its freon or capacitor? Can you please share some thoughts?
    2) I was researching on capacitor and based on my AC model figured out that 35/5 440v should be compatible with my model (York h1ra042s06d). But when I open my AC unit, I saw existing Capacitor is 40/5 440v and my AV was working fine last season. Can different Capacitor specifications still work fine on AC unit. Your thoughts on this?
    Will really really appreciate your help on these. Thank you so much.

    • @ND-fy3wu

      1. you can just check first if your outside unit/condenser unit is still working properly, the fan and compressor, so you know if u need to do something about them but not freon first.
      2. i think 40/5 is better for your system.

    Ok, thanks for the help. My a/c fan stopped working yesterday. All labels on the unit are worn off. Unit has 2 capacitors, One is oval which i can read 3uf 370. Other capacitor is round, cant read anything.
    It's an old Ruud unit, very small. My house is 700 Square Foot. So I guess I'll try the smallest capacitor i can find.

    Very helpful series of videos, thank you. I have a question: In that scenario when you do not know the capacitor for your unit because the capacitor is unreadable and so is the model plate, what are the risks if you choose the wrong one. You mentioned we can guess based on the size, but what will happen if you choose the wrong one. Will the capacitor fail or will the AC unit get damaged?

    A few years back an AC tech came out and said I either had a bad capacitor or the wrong one for my recirculation motor as it was drawing excessive current.
    I told him I had replace the motor and replace the cap with the identical cap that was in there. He questioned if I still have the box that the new motor came in and I did which called out a different size capacitor than what I replaced it with. So evidently guessing could cause an increase in current draw if you have the wrong cap

    • @averyalexander2303

    Best practices are also to do some follow up electrical bench testing, even if JUST replacing the capacitor. #1 Amps on compressor running and startup. Electrical components on indoor coil would be another best practices starting point. This might be a second DIY video opportunity for testing other electrical components (most DIYERS are afraid of electricity because they dont know how the electrons move; then ohms law goes over there head or interest) * I cringe when I see HVAC contractors marketing they do a 174 point inspection- such hogwash.
    This is a good practical video for the homeowner DIY or budget conscience homeowner before paying for an over priced HVAC tech call on a capacitor replacement or worse getting sold on false information and scams. Last recommendation, pay for the higher priced USA made capacitor (if you have access to that brand) capacitor. The amazon china-nes-im have very low quality control test standards & materials- at min buy two if you go this route. Genteq capacitors are a middle of the tier choice yet still from CHINA!

    Are home HVAC compressor capacitors that much different from industrial (supermarket fridge?) compressors? I have a custom system that has two zones, each with it's own 1 ton Copeland compressor from the 1980's with two capacitors each, a small and a large capacitor. I'm still trying to access the larger one on each (it's locked inside a metal housing which is in a tight space and hard to get to), but the physically smaller ones are labelled "430-516uF" and my Fluke 117 meter says they are approx 495 uF so I think they are correctly labeled, however they are fairly new (2016-2018 mfg date stamped on them) so because they are so much bigger than the capacitors you mention in the video (only 35 - 5 uF) I'm not sure the previous technicians put in the correct capacitors.
    FWIW, these physically smaller (430-516uF) capacitors are cylinder shaped have only two terminals but from what I can see of the larger ones, they are not round, but more like binocular case shaped, kind of rectangular but with rounded long sides (hard to explain). Oh, and the smaller capacitor has a 'bleed resistor' across it. None of this makes sense to me. The schematics seem to show the physically small & large capacitors connected in parallel with the smaller one protected by some kind of symbol that looks like an inductor & thermostat (possibly a surge or cutout of some kind?).
    I'm not even sure any of the capacitors are bad, but one of the motors flips the circuit breaker whenever I turn it on now after sitting for over a year. Might be locked up compressor I suppose.

    • @ND-fy3wu
      @ND-fy3wu 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      usually if u got a burnt fuse, that means something is wrong on the circuit, shorted maybe. it could be your contactor in your case. the possible reasons can be 2:
      1. your contactor is bad, maybe you just need to push that button again and again when power off to make it work again, but better idea is you just replace it if you can, be careful with the electricity safety.
      2. your contactor doesnt have 24 volt current supply, but you will need a multimeter to check it when with power on, so by this case, it can be dangerous to you, better get one professional to do it if you are not sure what and how to do it correctly and safe.
      hope this help.

    • @ND-fy3wu

      you can easily think about capacitors in your system like chargers, to help motors run better. larger capacitor will make your motor running like crazy and will burn it out sooner. however, your system is 3.5 tons, it should usually have a 55 uf for it, 35 sounds too low, but you may need to google it to find the manufacturer's offical spec, or check it on the dataplate

    Is there capacitor likely to be bad if there top is rusted? The canister is bright and shiny like new.. The top lookslike it's sat in water for 5 years or so... Oh and the fan motor comes on no problem if I manually depress the plunger on the contactor

    My outdoors unit fan is working, I changed the dusty furnace filter but still no cooling. The air out of the fan don’t feel hot. I think the compressor is not working. When the capacitor is broken the full unit do not start? Or the fan works but the compressor doesn’t? I cannot recognize the sound.

    Is it common to have a dual capacitor with wires only attached to herm and common. That's what I have on mine. Fan runs but compressor doesn't kick on. Not sure if it is wired properly.

  • @lobsangdhondup5377
    @lobsangdhondup5377 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I replaced the dual run capacitor with matching microfarad readings but the fan still needs manual jump start at times. Any other possible reasons or solutions? Thank you for all the helpful videos.

      Unfortunately that is likely a failing fan motor. My guess is that eventually even kick starting it will not help..

      Can you get to the label on the blower motor? It lists what capacitor is needed for the motor. Another option is to look up the part or call a parts store and ask them to do it. I explain how and show an example in this video: th-cam.com/video/faCno8-vRnw/w-d-xo.htmlsi=X9-ZP3PjV-kE2UxD

    All else fails they probably make universal replacement capacitors which gets the capacitance close enough to make it work.

      @@WordofAdviceTV They are available. An HVAC technician could carry just three American Radionic Engineering’s 440V capacitor models on the truck and they will get you out of most situations.
      AmRad Engineering:
      TURBO-200-MINI-IM Universal Motor Run Capacitor (fan motor size),
      TURBO-200 Universal Motor Run Capacitor (for compressor & fans),
      TURBO-200X Universal Motor Run Capacitor (for larger units).
      In the field 370Volt capacitors don't seem to last as long as 440Volt capacitors will. (may be due to electrical spikes, surges, and inductive flyback from the motor windings)
      Another brand/model is the Motor-Mate Cool Run MMUNICAP200 Universal Capacitor.

    After you shut off the power to the AC, the capacitor doesn't maintain a charge for more than about 30 seconds does it?

    • @WordofAdviceTV
      @WordofAdviceTV  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It actually can maintain a charge for much longer than that.. That's why it's always a good idea to discharge it before touching the terminals

    Man, I don't know for who you filmed this video. But I'm pretty sure it's not for the professional. You are better to delete this video. At least the second part of it. There is no guess!!!! And you learn the people in the wrong way. I'm pretty sure that Mr. homeowner or start tech will watch your video and give you it 👍. Then he will put the wrong cap. If you can't determine what is the uf. You need to get info from the sticker on the compression. Or sticker from the fan motor. Also, the neighborhood unit might look the same. But the tonnage might be different. And very last thing, what is the supplier who selling parts for the condenser without asking for a trade license.

    • @proanswers

      Check your grammar: makes no sense. "And you learn the people in the wrong way". Terrible sentence. Ironically your criticizing the education of this video but your grammar usage is incomprehensible. Your grammar undermines your ability to convey your logic and makes you sound stupid! . Another example "You need to get info from the sticker on the compression" Do you mean compressor? Most compressors manufactured in 1999 the stickers and rust removed any viable information; additionally your still going to have to look up the compressor model # manufacture information online or use an app i.e copeland compressor app. BTW there is a TH-cam EDIT button, USE IT!
