You saved me a lot of money already. First, it was my cap and so I replaced it myself. A month later, it was my fan motor, like today, I replaced it myself too. For quick calculation, if it is + or - 6%, just multiply the MFD by 1.06 or 0.94 and you'll get your MFD right away. Thanks you for helping me save some money.
New to HVAC and an Apprentice I am. I really want to thank you for taking the time to simplify this matter determining of a good vs bad capacitor. Much appreciated 🙏
Thank you for all your generosity to homeowners that are so appreciative of your easy to understand instructions on how to keep our HVAC in such a great working condition! I can’t thank you enough!
Thanks so much for your video. I was able to diagnose my ac problem and found out that the run capacitor was bad. Ordered next day delivery and I have my AC fixed next day. I really really appreciate your help. Keep up the good work and god bless you.
Love your videos & keep up the good work! Here's a helpful tip with the calculator to save steps/time. Instead of putting in the extra numbers in parentheses , just type in 35+6% or 35-6% on the calculator to get the microfarad range. Makes life much easier! 😀
Just want to say thanks for this. My blower motor inside was whirring but not running and this helped me figure out how to test the capacitors. I spent $50 on a clamping multimeter which I'll keep for next time and $12 on the capacitor that needed to be replaced and that wouldn't even have covered the callout for anyone else. Saved me a fortune.
Long time follower. You are an outstanding teacher. I have a “seasoned” (assembly date 29Jan2008) Payne unit that stopped working. Armed with your education, I located the Dual Run Capacitor and replaced it with like replacement 60+ 5Mfd I had ordered long before as a contingency. This action restored unit. All is well. However, whilst replacing this Dual Capacitor I noted a “add-on” 10Mfd Capacitor off to the side. (It is attached to wires with a cable tie.). The 2 leads off this add-on go to HERM and Common on the proper Run/Start Capacitor. Which I believe puts it in parallel with the HERM Capacitor, thereby increasing plate area/capacitance. I since learned people will use this short cut when only 1 side of a Dual Capacitor is bad. The schematic on the unit does not indicate Mfd Rating of the Capacitors for the Fan and Compressor. I can only assume the Dual Run Capacitor I replaced based on what was already there, was of correct value or what manufacturer intended. Question: Do I remove the “extra” 10Mfd capacitor or leave it? A second question I have regards Filters for the HVAC. There are many out there claiming to allow air-flow, but what FPR or MERV value will insure adequate filtering for the HVAC and still not overtax/overwork my older system? Thanks. And again, I sincerely appreciate your outstanding instructional videos. Joseph
Thank you! I appreciate that you've been a long time follower and I like that you included all the details with your questions. 1. Many compressors will have a specs label on them which also lists the size capacitor that is needed for it. If you are able to get to it and it's not faded out, you can find out exactly what size capacitor you need. If you only need a 60, then I would take that extra capacitor out. Another option is to call an HVAC parts store, give them your model number, and ask which size capacitor is needed for your unit. They should be able to look that up for you. I do an example call in my video on how to order HVAC parts, if you need more on that. 2. For filters I recommend lower values. MERV 6 or MPR 300 for example. The premium filters don't filter much more yet they do restrict the airflow more. Hope that helps! Stay cool! Jay
Great video it helping me in my hvac school training your explanation is the best you consider teaching hvac in classroom if you not a teacher love channel man.
Quick first note- i didn't have a multimeter with the uf setting, found that you can use ohms instead. From what I could tell, If your light and beep blink on then stay off, your capacitor is good. If the light and beep stay on and the reading doesn't 0, or if no beep or light at all, its a bad capacitor. Second note- Lifesaver! Detailed and easy to follow instructions make your vids the best. Its pretty cold in MI right now and my furnace stopped working. Blower wasn't working right. Used steps from another vid of yours to rule out the main board. Then this vid and found a dying capacitor. What I feared was going be a multi hundred dollar visit from the heating and cooling guy turned out to be a $6.25 trip to the hvac and plumbing store. Furnace back to work. Thanks from me and my now warming up family!
I suppose if there is no continuity between the leads of the capacitor, then testing ohms may work. However to properly test a capacitor you may use uf setting, with the capacitor removed. I also use a MESR-100 ESR Meter, which can kind-of test the capacitors without unsoldering them from a circuit board. However sometimes you still have to unsolder them to get the best reading. Anyway, testing for ohms will not properly test capacitors.
Thanks for the explanation as to if it would run if out of range, and how it affects other components. My 45 was reading about 12. It was running, but I’m sure near its end of life. Florida, so our systems work pretty hard. Better safe than sorry.

Thanks, this helped me identify a bad capacitor. Hopefully the replacement I ordered will have fixed my issue. For those reading, make sure your readout is in the correct units. To test capacitor under load: Capacitance (MFD) = Start Winding Amps (between the capacitor and the start terminal) X 2652 Divided by Volts from Start to Run (Herm and C or voltage across the capacitor). From So Cal - All I know is "Aloha" and "Kahuna" in Hawaii 😎🤞

Your videos are so informative! Thank you so much for your explanations. I wanted your input on my situation. My ac fan was not spinning just buzzing humming. I was able to kick start it by manually spinning the fan with a stick. Videos said maybe a bad capacitor. Swapped it with a new one. But its still doing the same thing. I have to keep starting it with a stick once it tries to come back on after it cycles off. Any idea what else it could be. Don't want to keep going outside to start the fan. Thank you!!
Actually 42.3/47.7 since the capacitor (@ 2.57) being tested is -/+ 6%. Not trying to nit pick. Just don't want those that are new to be confused. Great teaching video.
Thank you Dan! Haha no I'm still here 😄 I used to post a video every Saturday but things have been busy here so I stopped posting weekly and it's not always on a Saturday.
Another reason your multimeter can be erratic like what you were describing is because it's battery is weak. I just had the same thing happen to my fluke, and replaced the battery with a fresh 9v and the problem instantly cleared up. I measured the old voltage and it was only 6v! Just like capacitors, electronics that run off specific battery voltages will still work even though the battery is weak, but they won't work as well.
Thanks for the video, when I checked my compressor's capacitor, fan rating is ok around 4.9 mf but Hermes one is 31.77mf and my capacitor rating is 35uf +-5. So what do you suggest shall I change or is it ok?
I have a split system 2 Ac condenser’s outside and 2 heaters in the attic. They are about 18 years old now they seem to be fine. My question is what filter should I put in ? I been using a merv 8. What would you recommend? I really don’t know…
@@WordofAdviceTV I checked them this morning, they are a merv 5 .. hope that is good. ? I just want to protect the cooling coils. I really have no allergies.
Excellent videos, I have a not loud humming on my furnace when it is turned off. When I tried to turn it on with my nest thermostat it just does not turn on and the nest screen says “in 1hr 20min will get to the desire temperature” but it nevers turns on. Another thing, I tried to replace the capacitor but the iinformation in the label where it says the capacity is erased, how can I figure it out the specs for that capacitor
No all looks good the furnace board does not send any error codes, it has a steady green light. The weird thing is that I hear the humming even when the furnace is turned off through the nest thermostat
@@juanantoniohuerta9024 Hmmm.. Okay in that case I would try to determine how far in the sequence of operation does the furnace get? th-cam.com/video/AQD_MedIklI/w-d-xo.htmlsi=C0ezYYL-0mk2jSwn If nothing at all, then perhaps try bypassing the thermostat and see if it turns on: th-cam.com/video/bmZc76ufTNY/w-d-xo.htmlsi=6mnMHHii16Pq9CFx
Thank you so much for a prompt reply, I saw the videos and gives a better idea what I should be looking for, I will give it a try and will post my results.
should check common to common and herm/fan with the positive meter lead. start caps don't matter but if they have a resistor between the terminals you must clip the resistor for an accurate meter because if you don't your meter will give crazy reading
Great video thanks. QQ If one of the Com terminals in use has lots of corrosion, could one simply change to another. The readings are good on the alternative terminal. Or should I get rid of it?
I know some phone calculator by default only display standard so the quicker way to calculate the % is... To get the minus result just subtract whatever the minus % on the label from 100% 35uf X 0.94 = 32.9 And for plus side 35uf / 0.94 = 37.2

If you are a math nerd and lazy like me you can calculate it much easier like this :
Cap with a 30 MFD with +/- 5%
Upper range : 30 * 1.05 = 31.5
Lower range : 30 * 0.95 = 28.5
Cap with a 30 MFD with +/- 6%

If your multimeter doesn't have a micro farad setting, can you test capacitance using another setting?
Great video Question why are there so many terminals on each connection ? like "C" common has 4 connectors ? yet the fan has 1 ?
Great video. Thanks a lot.
How do you check if compressor is bad? Good videos! Godbless.
Thank you! I have a video on that right here: th-cam.com/video/0aAj0iqP95A/w-d-xo.html
Good ,lesson.
Spectacular video as always, keep them coming we appreciate it, and by the way your mango tree looks awesome, enjoy Hawaii.
This was also my issue. Thank you.
Awesome man thanks !
Congratulations on the move to Hawaii.
Learning ! Thanks!
Thank you dear brother
Jay, great video as always! I was afraid that the Hawaiian Life was too enjoyable & that you stopped making YT videos!
Thank you Dan! Haha no I'm still here 😄 I used to post a video every Saturday but things have been busy here so I stopped posting weekly and it's not always on a Saturday.
Hope your enjoying your new life in Hawaii! I’m sure you don’t miss all the turmoil of MN.
So what do you suggest shall I change or is it ok?
awesome man thank you for sharing!!!!! hey do you have any vid's on package units?
You bet! 😄 Unfortunately I don't have any videos on package units man. Maybe sometime in the future..
Thanks
I have a split system 2 Ac condenser’s outside and 2 heaters in the attic. They are about 18 years old now they seem to be fine. My question is what filter should I put in ? I been using a merv 8. What would you recommend? I really don’t know…
Merv 8 is good. 👍 I always used Merv 6. Both are fine, it's the higher rated ones that we usually advise against.
@@WordofAdviceTV I checked them this morning, they are a merv 5 .. hope that is good. ? I just want to protect the cooling coils. I really have no allergies.
@@johnf.6942 If its just to protect the coils, Merv 5 is perfect 🙂👌
@@WordofAdviceTV Thank you I appreciate your knowledge on this. I’m a subscriber to your channel and your videos are clear and easy to understand.
The hum might be the hum of the blower motor that is failing to start. Or the inducer motor. Is the furnace control board blinking any error codes?
No all looks good the furnace board does not send any error codes, it has a steady green light. The weird thing is that I hear the humming even when the furnace is turned off through the nest thermostat
@@juanantoniohuerta9024 Hmmm.. Okay in that case I would try to determine how far in the sequence of operation does the furnace get? th-cam.com/video/AQD_MedIklI/w-d-xo.htmlsi=C0ezYYL-0mk2jSwn
If nothing at all, then perhaps try bypassing the thermostat and see if it turns on:

Thank you so much for a prompt reply, I saw the videos and gives a better idea what I should be looking for, I will give it a try and will post my results.
Where can I find the chart u have I love it
Near the end of the video I show it full screen, just take a screenshot. 👍 I should really make some downloadable chart though..
should check common to common and herm/fan with the positive meter lead. start caps don't matter but if they have a resistor between the terminals you must clip the resistor for an accurate meter because if you don't your meter will give crazy reading
Thank you for pointing that out and clarifying Allan! Much appreciated!
Great video thanks. QQ If one of the Com terminals in use has lots of corrosion, could one simply change to another. The readings are good on the alternative terminal. Or should I get rid of it?
Oh for sure! All 4 of the tabs on the common section are connected so it doesn't matter which spade you use.
I know some phone calculator by default only display standard so the quicker way to calculate the % is...
To get the minus result just subtract whatever the minus % on the label from 100%
35uf X 0.94 = 32.9
And for plus side
35uf / 0.94 = 37.2
Would you know if there is a shelf life for a brand new unused cap?
thanks
As far as I know, there is no shelf life/expiration date. 👍
