As an HVAC tech I would agree that $350 for a capacitor is too high. The national average is about $160 plus a dispatch fee of around $85 for a total of $245 to do that repair. However if you are going to ask me to drive 25 miles after 8 PM in the evening to look at your air conditioner I don't want to hear any complaining about the cost of the repair. Thank you so much for the video! My fan was spinning so my motor wasn’t seized up so must be capacitor…. Went on Amazon & bought 2 capacitors gentec 40/5 for $16 (Genteq division of Regal Beloit Corporation, and the rebranding of Regal Beloit's GE ECM, GE Capacitors and GE Commercial Motors divisions). Received them and my 19 year old watched your video, shut off all power, emergency shut off, fuse box, and at disconnect, took pics of old capacitor, checked there was no power & put in the new. A/C up and running! Thank you again for detailed video!
I've usually watch tons of videos to ensure that I'm not overlooking any aspect of whatever it is that I'm repairing. You're clear, concise, and extremely thorough, which I can certainly appreciate. Thank you!
If you don't mind me asking, what was wrong with your unit? I'm having an issue with my AC not cooling, HVAC guy said it's probably the capacitor. I just had the compressor replaced a month ago so I know it isn't that.
You definitely have the best videos on TH-cam concerning AC. You are a great teacher because you don't leave parts out that you think everybody should already know. You zoom in where necessary so we can see what is going on in detail, and you make proper notes on the screen to help explain. Keep up the great videos. Thanks
I want to sincerely thank you for your videos they saved me hundreds of dollars I really couldnt afford to pay for a technician to come out. I wanted to note that my capacitor was the component that was bad but it looked perfect aside from a little dust, no warping or ruptures etc. but because I heard humming and the fan spun freely I went ahead and just risked it replacing the capacitor as it was under $20. Thank you again you are an asset to TH-cam and more importantly the people like me watching!
You are heaven sent bro!! My buddy recommended someone who I thought gave a very fair price of $125 to do this 2years , I watched and thought it looked simple, and here I am doin it myself after a storm lastnight.
Hello! Let me join the almost 1,000 commenters by saying how amazingly through, helpful and informative this video was. I was able to replace the capacitors in our AC unit that went out (I had previously purchased them on advice of a neighbor), and this video gave me the knowledge and encouragement I needed to do it myself. We have cool air and a functioning AC unit without a call to the AC guys! And I didn't get electrocuted thanks the the tips on discharging the capacitor (this is what I was really nervous about). Thank you for your help!
Great explanation! People like you are a breath of fresh air. An HVAC company told me my blower capacitor was low on charge and suggested replacing it. They quoted me $267 to do so. The capacitor sits in a cradle outside the blower motor with two leads! I was floored at the price. I bought the same capacitor for $10. Enough said.
@@betsaidacruz871 not all capacitors are the same as the guy below said. All you have to do is pull the old one out and match specs to a new one. Make sure microfarad numbers and voltage match then it will work properly.
I do not usually comment on youtube videos, but this helped me save a lot of money when out air went out this last week. Just the fan was working on the outside unit . The compressor stopped working. Got over 87 inside the house and our portable air conditioners didn't cut it. I used your video and went to to a local plumbing parts place and found the exact capacitor I needed. I safely discharged the old one and put new one in. At first the whole unit started up quieter and I could not tell the compressor was on. I was surprised when I put my hand on coolent line going into house and it was super cold. So thanks!! this video was the difference between getting a big bill or helping myself and not waiting a couple of days.....
Dude. You are an absolute legend. I’ve gone from being clueless and too intimidated to mess with my A/C system to confident and super interested in how the thing actually works. I’ve watched at least a couple hours of your vids. Just replaced my capacitor by myself on a Sunday for 25 bucks. THANK YOU FOR THESE AWESOME VIDEOS!
This video allowed me to diagnose and fix my ac without having to call a tech. Me and kids are now enjoying the ac again in this 97 degree heat so thank you so much for this detailed video that saved me hundreds on having someone come out and fix it!
I always check TH-cam videos before trying a DIY project for the first time. This is, by far, one of the best videos I've ever watched. Thanks so much for this very easy-to-understand video!
Absolutely spot on advice. I have cleaned out my condenser as instructed and just waiting to change the capacitor to experience my full satisfaction. I am positive that it will go well.
Just wanted to add to the grateful voices around here for this video and your others. After our system stopped cooling yesterday, I checked around everything I could, and eventually by listening to the neighbor's unit could tell that our compressor wasn't running even though the fan was. I didn't know about the dual capacitors until now. Anyway, found a local hardware store that carried the capacitors, and with your instructions had it changed out in minutes and cool air was back in our lives! You've really done a great service to homeowners!
I’m so glad I find you! I just replace the old capacitor and my unit is running like a charm! Got the replacement on Amazon for like 12$ and overnight it. I’m 30 weeks pregnant and my ac broke on Saturday night I have 2 spare window units for emergencies. But you really save me a lot of money 💰
My condenser went out this afternoon so I called a local AC repairman for an appointment tomorrow afternoon. Decided to check out TH-cam first to see what i could do and saw this video. Ran to the nearest ACE to get a capacitor, followed your instructions, and it 5 minutes got it running again! Now I get to cancel that appointment. Thank you so much!
Because of you, we are now enjoying the comfort of our AC. Thank you. I diagnosed the problem and changed the capacitor. People like you make this world a better place to live.
After doing a bunch of other maintenance steps, my AC compressor still wasn’t kicking on. For this video and the 20 other videos I watched, thank you!! This saved us a few hundred bucks on a HVAC service call.
Great video! 105 degrees today in Texas!! A/C unit stopped cooling. Found the compressor running but the fan not blowing. Opened the rear panel, found a dead lizard laying next to the capacitor! Assume he was electrocuted and it also fried the capacitor in the process! Your clear, concise video walked me through changing the capacitor. One thing I ran into that I have not read on this thread is that the top of the old capacitor was so rusted, that I could not read the names of each leads (TERM/FAN/C). Because of this, I did not know where the wires need to terminate on the new capacitor. I used a screwdriver to etch off some of the rust that allowed me to make out the names of each terminal. Thank you for the video, it saved us from a hot house!!
Thank you so much! Videos like this are what make TH-cam so great. Used my meter and determined my capacitor was bad. Replaced and have AC again! Thanks again!
105 in So Cal this week. Came home to hot air blowing and no sound from compressor. Noticed the fuse was blown on the AC, so I reset the breaker. AC tried to go on, but tripped the fuse again in about 3 seconds. I replaced the capacitor thanks to this amazing video, reset the breaker, and all is working perfectly! Just wanted to add this note that a bad capacitor can trip a breaker, since the purpose of the capacitor is to stabilize/compensate for the current surge of electric motors on startup. If it happens to you, don't keep trying to reset the breaker, as you can damage that eventually. Start with the capacitor!! Thanks, Jay!
Indeed he is if I could give you a million likes I would you just saved me time and money waiting on someone else really appreciate it, I never comment on people vids except Oilver Tree or Gorillaz but this deserves thumbs up.
SUPER helpful.. thank you!! Multiple people told me to have a professional do this (including my dad, my neighbor who is a retired electrical engineer for the power company, and the receptionist at the HVAC company we've used in the past), but I did it myself in literally 10 minutes. It was incredibly easy. Just make sure you are A) turning the power off, B) using a voltage tester pen to confirm the power is off, and C) discharge the capacitor like he said in the video. Saved me several hundred $$, and I now have a spare capacitor to fix it instantly if this happens again. We have 2 AC systems, so this is especially helpful as I'd imagine we'll go through capacitors 2x as fast
I am handicapped just had 2 leg surgeries on my right leg and guess what! I fixed my own AC with your video! Thanks so much for your videos I watched all of them and went step by step with my iPhone and I am so happy that I got my AC running in 40 min. Which it took me longer due to nerves. But your advice is spot on and home owners appreciate it so much! Thank you thank you! You save me $300 I am guessing if I called an AC repair man!
I love you, regular homeowner here. You helped me troubleshoot and fix my AC for less thank 50 bucks, vs doing an quote emergency service call since its the weekend. my capacitor was bad. i have zero hvac experience but im mechanically inclined. Just tested it and picked a new one up at a local part shop for 28 bucks you saved me at a minimum 500 bucks possible more with labor.
Thank you for such a More In-depth tutorial/education on AC capacitors. I actually had to replace my capacitor about 4 years ago (just as we started hitting Triple Digits😓). I was so nervous, but our unit was back working and cooling our house in no time. Your video has given me more knowledge so that I am more confident and equipped for the task. Thank you again🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾
Thanks man you just saved me a couple hundred $. Bought the capacitor from ace hardware for $30. Heads up to anybody with a Goodman unit.. there’s a pressure switch on the bottom door for the blower motor and if you don’t put the door all the way on, the unit won’t come on. I owe you a couple beers if we ever meet. Thanks again!
Thanks for the video. The AC in house we are renting went out and the rental company didn't seem to be in any hurry to fix it. I work as a maintenance mechanic myself so I opened up the housing and seen a puff up capacitor. So I went to the hardware store and bought one for 20 bucks. It working again thanks

Thank you for your videos - I have cleaned the condenser coils and replaced the deteriorating refrigerant line insulation and I am now waiting for the new capacitor to arrive. (I needed to watch the How to Replace a Capacitor video again so that I made sure to order the correct capacitor) Thank you for your videos in these times I can only imagine what the ac company would have charged me. All in all, I have come to realize it does not seem as warm outside since I do not have a running AC, Go figure we did not have air conditioning when I was growing up either and we all survived. May God's blessings be upon you and your family.
Doing this when I get home tonight... Hoping my condenser will turn on...Thanks for the discharge tip.....Update... Changed and is now working perfectly... 14 dollar part and satisfaction of being able to work on it myself..HUGE THANK YOU
You’re the best! The instructions could not be better. It’s July 3, 2020 at 6pm & 110 degrees in Arizona & my rental house’s air went out. With your videos I was able to troubleshoot the problem & solve it within the hour. Ace Hardware had the capacitor I needed. This saved me big $$$ & my renters are happy too. I’m happy to subscribe. Thanks again.
Excellent teacher! I replaced my capacitor a few years ago and needed to do it again so wanted to do a quick review. I learned much more about capacitors from you than any other video. You are a great educator! Thanks!
I have no experience in fixing AC but I was able to fixed my AC with this video . The capacitor was broken . Thank you just sent some $$ to your PayPal. Thank you for taking your time to teach us . May GOD bless your abundantly ❤
@@jlui21 I paid the guy $65 just to diagnose it and he wanted to charge extra $ 250for replacement of capacitor. So I researched it online more about capacitor and saw this video and bought the capacitor for $9 and fixed it my self. Not too bad for $150 for your capacitor with labor. But next time we both know I know to fixed the capacitor 😛
Thanks for your great videos. You have saved me a lot of cash this year and a lot of inconvenience. I fixed my gas dryer for $15 earlier this year with the help of your dryer repair video. Your very thorough repair video helped me diagnose and repair my 37 year old dryer. Then my A/C started acting up a few weeks ago. Searched out your general A/C video and figured it was probably a capacitor. Your instructions made it very easy to figure out what capacitor I needed, so several weeks ago I picked up a spare for $16. Well today with a house full of company, including some overnight guests, 100+ outside, and of course the A/C quits working. Pulled up this specific how to replace a capacitor video and within 30 minutes, we were up and running. If I could even get a repair tech on a weekend, it would have been over $250 and it would have been a very uncomfortable hours or days wait. You give me the confidence to tackle projects well outside my comfort zone. Aside from saving money, it is very satisfying to fix something with your own hands for minimal cost. Thanks again for the great educational videos you produce. Oh, and I am ordering a spare to replace the one I just used.
Best instructional video ever! My capacitor was all rusty on top so I couldn’t read the names but since you proactively explained how to distinguish each element, I was able to successfully rewire onto the new capacitor. A/C is running now. 🙌 I live in Florida and it is HOT right now. Thank goodness for your excellent instruction. Thank you!!! 🙏❤️
Thank you! I’m still at it. I had hoped I wouldn’t have to call the pros. As I mentioned my husband was killed not too long ago and not only do I have to be self sufficient, I also like to learn & challenge myself. I’m in the process of replacing my capacitor on my AC. I ordered exact part for the unit; however the capacitor that’s in my unit now has 3 connectors: C-has 4 tines- 1 tine connected to yellow wire, 1 tine connected to black wire leading to Hard Start. Therm - has 3 tines -1 tine connected to blue wire & 1 tine connected to black wire also leading to Hard Start. Fan - has 1 tine and no wires are connected to it. Also found that my AC unit has 2 extra pieces: An “A -1 component Hard Start multiplier WSX -8 A”= 2 black wires - 1 connected to C other connected to Therm on existing capacitor. After more research I found that the other piece (squarish small box starting to rust at the bottom) is a small run capacitor. My challenge is starting to overwhelm me! You guys are all awesome and I’ve learned a lot from your videos. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Btw - I purchased a tester. I just watched another video that showed you can eliminate that small start capacitor if you now have a dual capacitor. I’m not sure if I should just connect exactly as is, replace small run capacitor too or should I try to eliminate the run capacitor and how? I purchased a tester like the one you tested with. Can I check the small rusting run capacitor while it’s on the AC unit outside, all power is off, top of capacitor is all wrapped up in black tape.?
I took your advice and bought a spare cap for my unit two weeks ago. Today, after 5 straight days of 90 degree heat, my old capacitor died and fried the herm wire. Installed my spare and had it cooling in no time. Thanks for creating this video!
Retired heavy/medium duty truck tech here. With your knowledge and my meter I was able to troubleshoot and repair my A/C unit. Thanks so much as you saved me a significant amount of cash!! Tea bag trick was awesome.
"Capacitors fail frequently and also do not take hot weather well. If you had a stretch of 3 days, or even a week, there's a good chance your capacitor might fail." ...as I look at my failed capacitor and this recent heatwave where the past week was 100+ Thank you, you have been so helpful!
Brother, you're the best, our capacitor went out last night around 10:30pm thanks to your You tube channel I was able to diagnose and replace it for 28 dollars via Grainger! Thank you for making this gem of a how-to video all your viewers really appreciate it!
I ordered one, we took all safety precautions. I got the new one(got a spare too)'off an ebay H&Air distributor. Put it in today, easy fix. We're up and running. Thank you soooo much
Gosh ... you're great. I'm a woman and my AC has been cycling on and off quickly. We cover the unit over the fall and winter so it's very clean inside. No leaves or debris. The fins don't look dirty but I will probably try to clean them as well. I think I will open the side panel up and see if the capacitor top is puffy like you showed us.
Dude. Money saver right here. Had someone come out to replace my capacitor last month on one my units - $200…. One of my other units went out a couple days ago, so I watched this video, ordered the part on Amazon for $18, and fixed it for myself today. THANK YOU.
Saved my bacon, sir. HVAC repairmen make it sound like replacing a capacitor is some magical thing. But for $20 I replaced mine today. And instead of sitting in sweltering heat (heat index of 101F today) all weekend because they wouldn't come out until Monday, I was able to repair it myself and relax in cool comfort this weekend.
Im in the electrical industry and i replaced mine and watched ur video after.....great video (just start by advising to discharge the old cap). Thx for the great instruction.
In Florida, if you call an AC guy to come and look at your AC and give you an estimate and stuff, some of them will secretly drain coolant fluid or intentionally break or otherwise sabotage your AC unit in some way so they can tell you that you need to replace the whole thing.
I'm in the Chicago Land area. It's called heating and cheating cooling and fooling. They will do everything and lie and cheat is just terrible and they're allowed to get away with it
@@ketchuponeggs1149 yea the thing is most people can’t do it them selves because of the supply houses. In my area none of the supply house will not sell if your not licensed. If you can do it your self and complain about the price don’t call us. That’s what we tell consumers
Thank you. Thanks to you, i replaced a fuse, and a Capacitor. My AC is working again. I do have an electronics background, but you gave me the confidence to troubleshoot my own problems. I only had to endure 2 nights of the last heatwave. 🙂
Great video! $9 and 90 mins (including watching the video and going to the supply store) later I'm getting cold a/c again. I felt all of the safety issues were addressed and never had any doubts for this repair. A+
At last -- Of all the youtube videos -- someone finally explains that -- 1. A replacement capacitor is ok to have SMALLER dimensions than the original, as long as the MFD match and voltage equal to or are more than original voltage. AND 2. If a capacitor only has two connections and they are not marked in any way -- the connections are obviously interchangeable and can be connected either way. Thank you
You save me some $$$…. I’m not electrician and never done this before. I just watched your video of causes why AC HVAC not cooling. All your information were very helpful and have accurate detail on diagnosis and how to fix it. Outdoor AC fan stop working. And base on your video, its most likely bad capacitor. So, I bought a capacitor at amazon for only $19 and fix it myself. Guess what…. It’s working now. Thank you so much for sharing your talent. You are helping a lot of people in all your video, i’m sure. May God continue to bless you and your family.
Lucky you. I just watched this now because yesterday I had an AC company come out to fix my AC. They said the capacitor needed to be replaced and charged me $350.00.
This video saved my bacon. On the hottest day ever the AC failed. Following your advice, I went and pulled the power, popped open the AC unit, took out the old capacitor and replaced with the new one. Thanks again for posting this video!
Thank you so much for your videos. I just received a replacement capacitor and it's way smaller than the one in my AC unit outside.. I was freaking out. I'm very happy to see how to make the adjustment with the clamp.
I just replaced my capacitor on my ac unit with your help of course, service was out a week before i could get someone here. It was pretty straight forward, my unit was blowing warm air out of the vents and cold air from the top of the outside unit. The old capacitor was not puffed but rusty on the top and looked like shit. The part was cheap, but took an entire day to track someone down who would sell to the pubic. I just wanted to say thanks for making these videos, you saved me a ton of money and ill be sleeping good tonight!
Also side note: write down your model number of your ac unit before you call around, should be on a sticker near the area of the panel. I had to run out with my phone like a idiot lol. They will take you more serious if you have some key words, more likely to sell to you. Fake it till you make it

Dude, you are seriously a life saver, My capacitor went out last night due to this video and another one of yours I was able to diagnose and replace on my own for 30 bucks! I appreciate it!
Thanks for the tutorial! My ac unit stopped working today (just hummed, no fan turning or compressor). I followed your video, got a new capacitor and the unit is cooling once again!
Great job explaining. You do the best job explaining important points, and anticipating our questions with further explanations and videos. The best I have seen by far on youtube.
These videos are amazing! My only comment is that, since you are recording these videos for beginners, its more helpful of you explain all the safety measures that must be considered. For example, it will be helpful to some, if you explain why you put that rubber pad under your feet and make sure people know they must use insulated screwdriver when discharging capacitor 😊. Thanks and you are awesome!

We have cool air and a functioning AC unit without a call to the AC guys! And I didn't get electrocuted thanks the the tips on discharging the capacitor (this is what I was really nervous about). Thank you for your help!
Congratulations you're a brave and resourceful lady, I applaud you. My sincere respect and admiration for all women like you.
They charged you for labor and the drive. That’s business.
Thank you so much. The technician quoted us $220. I paid $14 for the capacitor on Amazon. This video was spot on!
Do you have to buy the same exact capacitor ? The one in my HVAC was discontinued so I’m not sure how to look for another one
@@betsaidacruz871 no all capacitors do the exact same thing they are completely interchangeable
@@joebyron9 All capacitors are not the same. Some are better quality than others.
You are seriously the man. I wish every DIY video on youtube was this indepth and well explained for those of us that aren't professionals. THANK YOU
A
You're welcome! Glad to hear that the video was easy to follow!
LOL , ac service people hate this guys channel .
Brother, either you practice a lot or your a natural teacher/actor...well done.
Thank you! :) I appreciate the comment!
Agree with that one!!!
@@WordofAdviceTV You are GOOD My Friend!!!!!!
Love this! Will said brother Dan.
You're so welcome!! :) Glad to hear the video was easy to follow and you got it fixed! Thank you for coming back to leave a comment, stay cool!
I went thru most of the summer with out A/C. Found your videos, and changed the capacitor. Now I have air again.Thank you so much.
This is one of the best DIY channels I’ve ever seen, and the best for A/C. Your thoughtfulness, clear communication, and sensitivity to the viewer are without peer! You should get a cut from all the money that you save people! I’ll keep watching and liking!
I left for lunch and came home an hour later and my temp in house was 81.
You helped tremendously. Thank you.
I just spent $100 on ac tech just to replace a capacitor and he is my neighbor.😩
- I paid my AC guy $150 to fix this. I would not have known it was the capacitor, but still...Good vid.
Haha! Hey, God knows what’s up man! Helping us with people like this to save us money. God bless
I live in Florida and it is HOT right now.
Also found that my AC unit has 2 extra pieces:
An “A -1 component Hard Start multiplier WSX -8 A”= 2 black wires - 1 connected to C other connected to Therm on existing capacitor.
Glad to hear that! :) Thank you for watching and commenting, stay cool!
"Capacitors fail frequently and also do not take hot weather well. If you had a stretch of 3 days, or even a week, there's a good chance your capacitor might fail."
...as I look at my failed capacitor and this recent heatwave where the past week was 100+
Thank you, you have been so helpful!
Thank you so much! This just saved us $400 for a 15 min job!!
Thank you my man! AC went out yesterday, overnighted the capacitor and she’s blowing cold! Saved me hundreds 🙏
Best Capacitor replacement video on youtube hands down....
Im in the electrical industry and i replaced mine and watched ur video after.....great video (just start by advising to discharge the old cap). Thx for the great instruction.
Dude thanks for helping homeowners, seems industry hates DIY repairs.
Yup, and then they overcharge and wonder why people would rather do it themselves

Great video! $9 and 90 mins (including watching the video and going to the supply store) later I'm getting cold a/c again. I felt all of the safety issues were addressed and never had any doubts for this repair. A+

I was always a lousy student, but if I had a teacher like you I would have been an A+ student, great job.
I've watched probably five videos now. Most informative videos around. Thank you
At last -- Of all the youtube videos -- someone finally explains that --
1. A replacement capacitor is ok to have SMALLER dimensions than the original, as long as the MFD match and voltage equal to or are more than original voltage. AND
2. If a capacitor only has two connections and they are not marked in any way -- the connections are obviously interchangeable and can be connected either way. Thank you
Thank you so much I replaced my blower motor thanks to ur videos and capacitor
Did myself for 200 dollars
You save me some $$$…. I’m not electrician and never done this before. I just watched your video of causes why AC HVAC not cooling. All your information were very helpful and have accurate detail on diagnosis and how to fix it. Outdoor AC fan stop working. And base on your video, its most likely bad capacitor. So, I bought a capacitor at amazon for only $19 and fix it myself. Guess what…. It’s working now. Thank you so much for sharing your talent. You are helping a lot of people in all your video, i’m sure. May God continue to bless you and your family.

Fake it till you make it
I would have saved $300 if I watched your video before. The AC guy came in, replaced the capacitor and charged me $300. Your video is great.

Great job explaining. You do the best job explaining important points, and anticipating our questions with further explanations and videos. The best I have seen by far on youtube.
Sponsors should be hitting you up already. Man you are a natural! As always, thx!!!!!
