Max Mikkelsen it was a time test. Individual time test. It doesn’t matter to anyone how everyone else is doing. You just got to meet the time requirement AND get the gear on correctly. You can be the fastest but if it’s on wrong it doesn’t count. You can come in just under the time wire and as long as your gear is on right that’s all that matters.
There are more people training the bunker gear than there were cadets on the board in the beginning - I'm guessing there were people in the group who had prior expierience (maybe transfers from other departments), who weren't trained as much as checked for their "combat" readiness. Same goes for the female in the front row, she's way more controlled and structured than the first-timers :)

Good luck to both of you. In EMS, they teach us: Your first priority is your own safety. Your second priority is your partner's safety. Your third priority is your patient's safety. Everyone else comes after that, and property even further down the line. Ask your Academy instructor their thoughts about this, see what happens. I'm sure Fire's priorities are a little different, but not by much! And please, for the love of God (and your medic), don't overdo it. Don't get yourself killed trying to be a damned hero. Dead heroes can't save anyone, or put out any more fires.
Hey guys, great video about the fire academy! I just finished my basic training for a voluntary firefighter in Germany and it's very interesting to see how training works over in the United States
Nice to see some traditional Content My Service has soooo lost its way over here in the UK 🇬🇧 It’s Sad to be watching it fall apart here 😔 Fair play to you guys 🙌🏾👨🏻🚒
You guys seem to care about your recruits. I really like this. Some places treat their recruits like trash and haze their rookies. That just breeds bad attitude and does build a brotherhood. Nice school to. Ours could use help lol but it over a hundred years old too...
Hazing builds comradery to a point as long as it doesn't go overboard. Otherwise you get a bunch of new people who think they know more than they do, or that they are more important than they are.
vincent vetitoe I think your right. I definitely got hazing as a rookie, but It was never so much that I thought the guys actually didn’t like me. the worst hazing usually came from other engine companies and then when my engine stood up for me that really built a bond and makes your feel apart of your engine
Nice Series with a lot of insight. I’m very impressed and it’s really fun to watch. Made Me wanna join right away 😎 best regards from a German Firefighter (voluntary Fire Service Berchtesgaden)
Yo, South Metro is the real deal. I used to live in Centennial and called the boys to check out my carbon monoxide alarm. A total of 8 guys showed up wielding axes of all kinds of sizes and uses. Had my back no matter what!
In Florida we have to have Fire Fighter l/ll already before we get hired on with a paid career department. That's crazy that you get hired on and then they put you through fire training.
@@Sn1peralex ah yes you are correct on that. Most other departments in Florida wont do that however my department will put you through Medic school after signing a MoU.
In the UK there is no pre-training or qualifications. You apply and your application form is your first test. Do one thing wrong or don't follow the instructions EXACTLY then it goes in the bin. If your application form is selected you then go for assessment. Fail or don't reach the required minimum at any part you are told to leave there and then. If successful you then take a written exam which you must pass. If successful you are then selected for interview. At interview be sure you know why you want to be a firefighter and do not say the money and pension! If you get through all that you then have to attend a rigourous medical. This is the part where you have no personal input....it's a pass or fail and can be bitterly disappointing as a fail at his stage is a bitter pill to swallow after all that effort and it also means you will NEVER be accepted and you get no further attempts. Virtually 100% of recruits pass out. Only those injured and those who commit serious transgressions are out. You then spend two years as a probationary firefighter. Very few ever fail probation as by this stage you have already proved you have the ability and aptitude. Failing probation is as much a black mark for the watch training officers as it is the probationer as it means those conducting training have not done their job properly in identifying specific needs and correcting faults. I think our selection process is by far the best as it gives equal opportunity to all comers and not just those who have the finance or opportunity to access pre-training or qualification. Your educational qualifications help a lot but the testing is designed to show you have the ability, attitude and physical aptitude to be successful as a firefighter. Those are the basic requirements but selection goes further. What you don't want is 100% of recruits to be of university level education as that creates problems when it comes to promotion. Someone is going to be disappointed and what you don't want are disgruntled and disappointed staff. It's not good for morale. Consequently students are often recruited as follows - 30% highest level of education, 30% decent high school or college education and the remaining 40% potential rank and file core firefighters who are the backbone of the service. This doesn't mean they aren't valued, far from it. These people make excellent BA maintenance operatives, driver/pump operators, specialist equipment operators and so on, all on top of normal firefighting duties. ALL UK firefighters are trained in all roles wherever possible ensuring everyone on the watch can do the jobs of the others. Unfortunately in the UK financial cuts means vacancies are few and far between and morale has taken a nosedive. Manning on a first line pumping appliance used to six with a minimum of five. Now it's normal to just have four which is limiting and downright dangerous when a BA crew needs to make an entry for rescue and there is no second appliance in attendance. Our strict BA procedures do not allow for BA crew working without safety measures and controls in place which is extremely stressful on the crew itching to get on with the job. The OIC now has to take a chance..risk committing the BA team without backup risking their lives and his job or wait and run the risk of losing a casualty and the anger of a public who have no idea of the position cost cutting measures have put him and his crew in. In some cases the OIC has been prosecuted in court when things haven't worked out. This is all down to politicians who care more about themselves than the countries first responders as all first responders have all been subject to cuts. The job is not what it was to be frank and we are not seeing the high standard of recruit we used to have simply because they do not feel valued by our own government. It's sad and makes me really angry.
I come from a long line of firefighters since the 1800s in New Jersey… my brother’s truck company basically search and rescue .. jersey City, New Jersey 20+ years of service… there is no breed like a firefighter people run out of the burning building and they run in….that takes a lot of balls in my opinion!!!!!

I think that’s national isn’t it? The 90 they are talking about is to be responding. Which if you on the pooper you gotta do a quick clean, duck run to the engine gear up and be gone in 90. At least that’s how understood is. In DC we gear up on the back step enroute, where out the door before the dispatcher is done talking. To each their own

When I was in junior high school, marching band was hard because of my seemingly unnaturally long strides. This would lead to me overtaking everyone while trying to move slowly. I still have trouble with keeping pace with people, even though I haven't been in any real marching activity since junior high. Everyone just move so slow. In high school I would wear boots just to slow myself down, but even that didn't work past the first couple days and I would routinely run PE in thick boots with a one inch heel and treads that a monster truck would be jealous of (they were hand me downs and the only pair I owned that actually fit) TL;DR I moved too fast for marching band and boots didn't slow me down.

In Poland our academy takes 2 or 4 years, it depends what kind of rank you want to have. If you want to be just firefighter you dont have to go to the fire academy, but if you want to be lieutenant it takes 2 years, and if you want to be a captain you'll have to learn for 4 years, but also after the captain school you will get a master title of fire safety.

I've been with US Departments for a few times in the last years. It was great fun all the time riding and doing the good stuff. But 16 weeks of training… still unbelieveable to me. In Germany it takes 18 MONTHS just getting through basic training + app. 3 years becoming a paramedic nowadays. And prior to this, you have to bring a trade like car mechanic to get hired by a FD. This is going to take another 2,5 to 3 years. In total something around 7,5 YEARS to become a FF and paramedic. If you want to climb the ranks, you have to take classes for weeks and months. Since I brought a degree in mechanical engineering, I took a shortcut right to battalion chief. (~5,5 years University + training). This is usually unbeliveable to an US FF. :)
It’s 16-18 weeks depending on where you live and then anywhere from 4-8 months before that to get your EMT-b. Some departments only hire AEMT’s which can take another 4-8 months after that. And then if you wanna me a medic fire fighter that’s like another year and a half on top of that? I’m still learning about the fire service but that’s how I understand it over here in the states
I feel their should be different agencies in the fire department you have a certain type of people specialized in certain missions and objectives just like the military you don't send the army into the water you send the seals or people trained in certain situations to handle certain calls I feel like the fire department is limited to certain objectives

Just curious. 5. How to overcome fear of fighting a fire and ect
I’d prefer a regular firefighter non military. As a beginner ff here in NC, the pay starts out about 40k so that’s about 3500$ a month. I have a gf and daughter so that’s why I’m pursuing it, best career for family. Why? Benefits, $$, time with family, respect, and it also keeps you fit so you don’t have to workout on your family time but while on duty

I am so upset, I became a volunteer firefighter last year and due to the Covid restrictions the Fire Academy waived the Hands On Training requirement part of my Fire Fighter 1 class. So even though I passed my written exam and now technically no longer a probie... I feel like I'm a year in the Fire Service with no real training. The sad part about all this is that I want to make a difference and serve my town well, but due to the damn Covid guidelines my department is in lockdown too so we haven't been able to train properly so HQ in only accessible to responding to Fire / Rescue calls.
My explorer post is militarized which I think is a good idea, because it instills discipline but also a sense of urgency, plus it was my idea to make it militarized because half of our explorers were not even disciplined, my post advisers doesn’t yell at the explorers or anything like that. We’re just trying to get more established as a post and as a fire department due to being low funded for the past few years but now we’re getting more help from communities so we can be more ready for the most dangerous calls. This is my last year as an explorer due to me being 21 and I’m getting ready to go to fire school and I’ve been an explorer since I was 17 and I loved it best times of my life. But the militarized thing is kinda cringy I will say but it’s for a reason not only to instill discipline but sense of urgency and to uphold honor integrity and courage and respect. But anyways much respect to all fire departments and all firefighters and emts and paramedics past current and future.
i didn't know they did the marching and the flag stuff, cant say i fully understand really why they have to do it either, i am from the uk so i don't know if they do that here but i cant think why they would have to. Having said that i respect all firefighters i think they are heroes and im not one myself so i wouldn't understand i guess. Respect to all fire fighters
Marching is usually a discipline and ceremonial thing. Discipline is big with it, and it's done at things like promotion ceremonies or change of orders. But that's coming from a military guy. Could be different for firemen

Military for sure
Ree Rip the team wont leave until everybody has their gear on, so its not the fastest one thats most important, its the slowest one

In EMS, they teach us:
Your first priority is your own safety.

Otherwise you get a bunch of new people who think they know more than they do, or that they are more important than they are.
vincent vetitoe yeah after a point hazing just creates a bad work environment
vincent vetitoe I think your right.
PPE donning..... man they pounded that into us the first week.

Which if you on the pooper you gotta do a quick clean, duck run to the engine gear up and be gone in 90. imagine wearing all that gear on a summer day and going inside a burning building, must be madness
9:13 Yeah, to be honest, it would take me a while to get this right with multiple fails.
When I was in junior high school, marching band was hard because of my seemingly unnaturally long strides. This would lead to me overtaking everyone while trying to move slowly. I still have trouble with keeping pace with people, even though I haven't been in any real marching activity since junior high. Everyone just move so slow. In high school I would wear boots just to slow myself down, but even that didn't work past the first couple days and I would routinely run PE in thick boots with a one inch heel and treads that a monster truck would be jealous of (they were hand me downs and the only pair I owned that actually fit)
TL;DR I moved too fast for marching band and boots didn't slow me down.
Sounds like you wasted your time with band and should have been an athlete.

In Poland our academy takes 2 or 4 years, it depends what kind of rank you want to have. If you want to be just firefighter you dont have to go to the fire academy, but if you want to be lieutenant it takes 2 years, and if you want to be a captain you'll have to learn for 4 years, but also after the captain school you will get a master title of fire safety.
and also our education is for free, but it is very hard to get through recruitment process

My question is why is it so militarized?
ikr
Charlie Sinclair it’s kinda cringy to be honest.. I understand marching for funerals and parades and stuff.
@@_RAY__ Yeah I feel you
It's because being a Firefighter is about respect, and valour. The militaristic approach is meant to instill that into every recruit.
Yeah aye, is it just an American thing? Because they don’t do that in the fire department here
I went to the Louis F. Garland fire academy in Texas for the USAF this academy seems to be a good one but nothing like the Air Force
It takes longer considering you have to be an EMT in the US
It’s 16-18 weeks depending on where you live and then anywhere from 4-8 months before that to get your EMT-b. Some departments only hire AEMT’s which can take another 4-8 months after that. And then if you wanna me a medic fire fighter that’s like another year and a half on top of that? I’m still learning about the fire service but that’s how I understand it over here in the states
Training looks incredible very impressive!
Question, do they get to go home everyday or do they stay there like in boot camp
Typically the recruits go home and commute like a regular job. Police academy is the same too.
Wow times have sure changed. Great looking academy.
I feel their should be different agencies in the fire department you have a certain type of people specialized in certain missions and objectives just like the military you don't send the army into the water you send the seals or people trained in certain situations to handle certain calls I feel like the fire department is limited to certain objectives
This is laid back compared to my Academy. Don't expect this of you come to Philly or any other big city.

5. How to overcome fear of fighting a fire and ect

I have a gf and daughter so that’s why I’m pursuing it, best career for family. Why? Hello i like your training i would like to come there I'm in fire department from south Africa
Unfortunately being militarized does not mean integrity.
Solute to the Fire fighters. Thank You
i didn't know they did the marching and the flag stuff, cant say i fully understand really why they have to do it either, i am from the uk so i don't know if they do that here but i cant think why they would have to.
