Don’t want to be over torquing or under torquing just using socket and gun

More and more I’ve been told torque sticks aren’t really accurate. Most techs I know use impacts then torque wrench to exact torque
I don’t use a torque stick at Toyota I just put them on w my gun on lowest setting then toque
At my dealer the techs only use torque sticks. As a Technician I have the responsibility to treat every vehicle as if it is my own. I will always torque every wheel to spec when I sign my name on the that repair order. The last thing I want to do is warp a set of rotors, warp a hub, or worse kill somebody because a wheel feel off due to over-tightened wheel studs. It only takes 1 minute to properly torque 4 wheels. If you can't spare 1 minute per vehicle, you're lazy.
I would also get a deadblow hammer for getting off tires

I said it before and I'll say it again. Express techs deserve higher pay than what they get. The amount of cars they have to do and how fast they have to do them is quite a bit more than the technicians have to.
I agree lube rack requires non stop working banging out oil changes and tires. There a dime a dozen tho so dealers dont see a reason to pay them more
@Truth Defender I was doing oil changes/multi point inspections at toyota in 10 minutes average once the car was in the shop. Set of tires 20-30 mins depending on the size
@Truth Defender usually only when it was super busy. I had an efficient routine. And 2 ten minute breaks a day

The oil filter wrenches may be the best for removal, when they slip. If you have to damage the oil filter upon removal; it ok if they crunch, because your putting a new one in it's place. However when installing a new one, just do it hand tight, and firm. Great advice! 👍
This a helpful video for rookies going into this field. But to include more into this video. As a Toyota Technician as well it's good to keep in handy of an allen set for TRD skid plates to access the oil filter housing & removing center caps from Aftermarket wheels to remove lug nuts. Thin wall sockets would be needed as well.

I just started as a lube tech at a chrysler dealer and this is what my core set looks like as well. Only difference is I have a 13mm long ratchet wrench lol. Chrysler is great when it comes to skids. Only the charger and challenger have to be removed to service. Good video.

I have a messed up driving record too. A large chain car repair chain hired me to be a lube and tire tech. Upon my background check coming back they said I could not work there at this time. Oh well I work in IT and do 95% of my car repair and maintenance.
Yea dealerships dont bother with bad records. I understand tho since they have to insure you to drive customer vehicles but it does suck for some I learned my lesson fersure

I live up north and would never use a 12 pt socket on an old nut or bolt. They are always rusty from salt and a big risk to strip. Ford Driveshaft bolts are 12pt.

My Chrysler days did make me the bucks. I remember thin timing chains like the width of a 🚲 😁. Did alot of cyl. Heads since the valve seats would drop.
@@forgedsteelwrench9249 I looked at a Challenger and the salesman told me they are more reliable than Toyota now. I did lots of DIY work on Ford and Toyota/Lexus, not familiar with Chrysler. Toyota products are very good. Ford V8 stuff is quality too.
@@alb12345672 glad to read that you DIY your rides, makes you really own your car no matter what you drive. Not many research their options before pulling the trigger on a new car. Whatever you drive now, (even if it is a chrysler) hope you have a set of reliable wheels.
@@forgedsteelwrench9249 I do every thing that you could do on jackstands. I drive a GS350AWD now. That is a very well built car, decent performance too. Not much to do except service. I changed out the Trans filter, probably not necessary. Can't hurt though and shifts much better.
I like the Chrysler RWD platform. Seems it is one of their better products. Never had a new car. Thinking now may be the time.

The newer Toyotas with the a25 engine are actually going back to the spin on filters but the Toyota filter cup fits those as well

Off topic but On the newer type toyotas with the paper filter oil canister. Do I need to open the bottom drain for the cannister? Is it necessary?
No that's just if you want to drain the filter before removal. I never did I just removed the entire cartridge

Thanks for this video . I'm looking to start my career at a local yota dealership here in norcal as a lube tech.
First of all, you said 7mm Allen socket, it’s actually an 8mm socket or you can most of the time get away with a T-50 torx bit, its for the Scion IAs. An 11mm is socket also for the tpms nut since Toyota’s policy is to remove the sensors before unmounting the tires. I would recommend also a memory saver to plug into the obd port so the memory saves on the car after installing a battery. I would recommend a band wrench set as well at least the small one aprox 63mm for the new Camry and rav 4 oil filters. Other than that, You were right on in giving a description of the tools needed

What is the oil filter socket part number
Do you know anything about the Motivx 2320 wrench for Toyota filters? I currently work at a parts store and we carry a Lisle 61040 and I’m trying to decide between the two as I get my tool box ready to start as a lube tech.
I’m 32 with little experience but been working at a tire shop for 3 months now and really enjoy it. Considering taking automotive classes this fall either one year certificate or two year program. Is it worth getting into this field this late in my age?
I hope Nick responds to your comment because I am in a nearly exact situation as you: 32 years old, no formal automotive experience/knowledge, I worked at Discount Tire for 3 years, interested in becoming an auto tech at the Toyota dealership 4 minutes away from my home and looking into community college auto tech classes once I separate from the Army where I've been a helicopter mechanic for 15 years.

@@TheAH64mech ya trying to decide on a trade this late in the game tough choice. Mainly done factory work which is ok but just isn’t fulfilling. Seems automotive field don’t always pay that great but I find it enjoyable and fulfilling.
Same boat guys but 35 and I've spent the last 10 years between parts and service writing and I'm soooo over dealing with the customers. I have tons of knowledge, but no formal hands on "experience"

When you started off as a line tech were you ever discouraged or had a tough time flagging your hours?
I have like 5 months as a line tech after being a lube tech, I have my good days and my bad days but sometimes I just feel discouraged, and I question myself a lot.
Tbh not really because when I first got on the line I got fed pure gravy. Even later on when new techs took over the gravy i managed to flag high hours you just need to stay positive dont let one bad job or paycheck discourage you! Mindset is everything
Don’t be discouraged I worked as a lube tech for 9 months then got moved to main line been on main line for 7 years now MT taking L1 Tuesday so hopefully MDT but when I was first moved off of quick lane onto mainline I actually made less money due to being slower then the other techs that had been doing it for years but that soon changed don’t get discouraged over it just take your time and make sure the job is done right the first time and I promise the speed and confidence will come.

Matco makes a better oil filter cup that also engages the tabs as well as the sides of the oil filter housing. Definitely recommend torque sticks at least the 80 and 100ft lbs. instead of plain 10 and 12 mm sockets I would recommend the magnetic ones
Those are nice but they crack after alot of uses but will do the job fine
So I’m a student at in high school and attendee at warren tech in Colorado. I’ve put in 2 years there and are looking to start at Toyota. We get the sep discount at snapon so I used money from a mutual fund to buy my set I’ll use for when I start working next year. I spent around 7000 on just the snapon and got a really good roll cart and a few misc brands for other. Should I put in an extra year to get an aa in automotive or just go right into working is there a difference in pay

Not a bad idea but personally never used them at the dealer. Just used a torque wrench after setting the vehicle down

Yes all Toyota/Lexus cartridges use the same oil filter socket. It even works on the small disposable filters that many 4cylinder Toyotas have.

Anyone that needs to get that filter socket needs to get the bluepoint. I got some other brand socket and it’s considerably heavier than the blue point.
I can vouch for the sockets 8,10,12,14,17,19. I have both deep and shallow sockets for these sizes.

This may seem off but later next year when I have money saved up I plan on working at Toyota either express lube technician or entry mechanic technician however am I able to get either jobs or do I need to start low to my way up to another job because I haven't worked on cars since I went to college in 2012 (was there for 1 yr). I like to start working on cars again and getting back into it however I'm 27 and is that bad on their end to not hire me that high of age? I'm just curious I want to get back into the automotive industry however I would like to know if Toyota will hire me or not because of my age and my not so great of automotive knowledge that I forgot a long time ago. Of course I know how to work on my own '14 Tundra and my family cars I've done the basic maintenance on them all but I'm curious if Toyota is willing to hire me at a high age and my not so great knowledge. So what's the best tier level or job to start out at Toyota because it seems like there's a lot of jobs on certain levels they have, seems all to confusing to which to start out at a late of age.
Try to get hired as a lube tech first. Theres only lube techs and flatrate techs so lube tech would be entry level. 27 is not old btw I've seen lube techs come in at there mid 30s

Another question, since I'll be starting out fresh, will Toyota promote (increases paycheck) me if I work well enough and do they also take out a lot of taxes (FYI, I live in CO)? I looked up on google and it says the average pay on Toyota Lube Tech is $12.86.
The reason why I'm asking is because I still have my '14 Tundra to pay off and having to loose a couple bucks from my current job to going down to Toyota might screw me hard on certain points even though SURELY they'll promote me down the road but I doubt anytime soon. So its like a gamble I'm saying. I would absolutely love to work at Toyota and become a automotive tech but having a few bucks down (as of right now) hurts quite badly with a/n expensive truck.

I've just started a mechanic apprenticeship at a local garage which has a great reliable reputation and I've got into mechanics since late 2018 how long do u think it will take for a amateur to get full experience and does it depends on a person and how quick he learns

Depends on the dealer everywhere I've been any more then 2 points they couldn't insure you to drive customer cars so cant even be a lube tech technically. I got lucky they let me stay I just wasnt supposed to drive customer cars

If your questioning on why he does not own a independent shop, then surely you jest. You realize you have to understand that in order to have your own shop, there are a lot of pros and yet lots of cons for it of course you're in control of it overall in most ways, but the main issue is buying the land fee from the higher-ups land ettore and it's a lot of work to have your own shop on a certain lot because you have to pay for the electricity, water, oil, gas, and much more just like rent but a lot lot more then what you can think of. I know because I have a family member and friend who owns their own business and they pay tons of money because they got to pay for the land, bills, and everything else. It's a lot more complex than you think, it's not an easy task.
