      @@AhhBhris what I did was started out with a lot of harbor freight stuff, and build your collection as you go. Buy snap on stuff that gets used a ton like a ratchet

    I usually drain the oil and then start my under car inspection, then tire pressure, and then by that time I tighten up the plug and put the new filter on. I’ve been a lube tech at Acura of Pleasanton for 9 months now. Appreciate you doing this video to give new people perspective.

    I just recently moved out of being a lube tech. I'm an Automotive Engineering Technician now for an R&D company. I've been watching you since I started at Toyota in 2019
    Tool trucks sell a plastic brake gauge with little feeler nubs for like $25; best low-cost investment for a new technician, they are extremely useful for checking brakes without removing the wheel

    I really appreciate the effort and time you put into this for all of us lube newbs! Just finished my second week on the floor at Honda dealership here in Oregon. This really helped me with developing an easy to remember/follow routine for every service which is something I've been struggling with. So thank you a ton!     I’ve been a lube tech at an Acura dealer for a year now. My routine is similar to yours which is to read over the history, mark down all major services, get the car in check all the lights, wiper blades, pop the hood and fill the washer fluid. I’ll then remove the oil cap, check the battery, check the air filter and get the car up at chest height for the rest of the inspection and submit it ASAP for upsales. I like to set tire pressure first to keep my air chuck clean. (same as yours) then rotate the tires, and drain and fill the oil at the end to reduce the number of gloves I need to use per car. If the car doesn’t need a tire rotation, I’ll usually be able to get a quick oil change out in 15-20 minutes.

    You also need to replace the oil pan drain plug washer, and make sure the old one is not stuck to the oil pan. Also do not over tighten the plug. Also do not over fill the oil.

    There’s 2 things you forgot to do. When under the car tap the muffler with your palm. This check how eroded the muffler is. Mufflers erode from the inside out so if you hear a lot of rattling then you can sell the customer a muffler replacement. Also the most important one, tire shakes! Pull towards you from the top of the tire. This checks the upper ball joint. Pull from the bottom, this checks lower ball joint. Shake tire from left to right, this checks inner and outer tie rods. Shake from top and bottom of wheel. This checks the wheel hub. If you feel any moment at all then double check it when doing under inspection. These components go bad often and mechanics will love you for bringing them work :)

    I would check brakes when the wheels are off during a tire rotation but if I don't need to take the wheels off, I have a Lisle Brake Lining Gauge that I can slide in from the side and measure by feeling until it fits with very little play. Very good tool and efficient when checking brakes.

    i’m a T-Ten student and i start my 2nd year next monday. i started working at toyota as a lube tech a month ago. for a oil and rotate and multipoint inspection i usually take 35 minutes if i’m fast and take 45 if i slack a little. i think it’s very easy. i just hate that i have a 4 post lift instead of a two post

      Im the opposite. I hate having to position the lift to get the vehicle in the air. With a 4 post i just roll up and lift. Plus with the 4 post you can still lift the car off its wheels.

      At my Toyota dealer we have 20 min intervals for cars. But we run a 5 man team. The 5th guy is a floater helping whoever needs help. Some days we’ll just bang bang bang cars out they show up early and then have a nice break for about 20 mins

    I work at Toyota. I pull in the car honk so guy behind checks my lights, pop hood, pull dip stick, remove cap, fill washer fluid, rack car bring to chest level, check tread, brakes, psi, then loosen rims raise the car, drain oil rotate tire while oil drains, check under car, get my oil filter from parts then hand in the RO to service writer (if I recommended anything) by the time I finish up the oil change the writer should be back with an answer.

    I normally give the tires a good spin ro check for bearing noise
    L/R and U/D shake to check for excessive freeplay at the tie rod ends, bearings and some ball joint types.

    I’m Also a Toyota dealership technician. Usually when it’s an express ticket i can get it out In 15-20 mins, depends on what you need to write up. You also need a 12mm 3/8” socket for the tundra skid plates.

      And 13mm. Also the 4 runner trd pro you need a star bit for the access panel bolts. Tundra, Tacoma, 4 runner if it has after market wheels you need a he bit for the lug nut cover

    I work at Toyota. For cars with low mileage, 10k or less; I don’t do a thorough inspection. I pull the car in, set the lift, pop hood and top off coolant, wiper fluid and unscrew oil cap, raise the car, check the treads, and start zapping off the wheels. Raise the car up and start taking off the oil filter and draining the oil, change the filter and drop the car and start the rotation. By the time I’m done w the rotation the oil is still draining so I go and get the oil. Tighten the drain plug, tighten the filter, Lower the car, fill the oil, put a sticker and reset maintenance light . This routine is the same for the high mileage cars as well, but with a thorough inspection, I check everything on a high mileage car.

    One thing with doing Toyotas a lot I would suggest is get the best cap you can afford for pulling the canister filters. Those things can be a royal pain to get off, especially if it's been a while since the last service. Being a dealer tech, you also would have the advantage of being able to simply walk and get a replacement if you break one instead of having to call around to various dealers and parts stores to see if they have one in stock.

      Cons of Independant...you have NO parts in stock besides a few filters and oils/fluids and bolts. A quick air filter change out will take 15-25 minutes to get there from the time you call them up. So 2 minutes into your oil change after getting it in and checking a few things now you have to wait half an hour for an air filter. You can do other services in that time but then you're stuck waiting at the end still. Nobody at the shop i was at had that special Socket/cap for the filters on Toyotas...used a punch and hammer, yeah. This aint some home town rodeo shop mom and pop its a performance shop like come on.

    Nerve racking to see your video doing all the inspection you have to do on your own as only the Lube tech position. Lol. I just want to start work already at the dealer so I can get rid of my nervousness. I’m still in the middle of my advance training for Volvo. It’s only been 1 week in and 13 weeks more to go. 14 weeks total of training. Thanks for this video man!

    At Nissan we do a body report incase you get blamed for damaging car and we make a video that gets sent to the customer showing all defects on the vehicle, we also hook up diagnostic while car in the air. But apart from that more or less same

    Thanks for sharing. I rather do all my oil changes, but when the weather hits over 100 degrees outside I just take it to the dealership. Maybe the next video you can show how to do the tightening of the bolts like the drive shaft, etc. I double check the work all the time. Cause one time we left the dealership the radiator fluid cap wasn’t on and we were missing a negative battery cover. All the fluid sprayed the engine. It was nasty. I also tighten the tire caps as well. Some techs are just not double checking their work. 🚙💨

    I used to work for a Suzuki dealer (back in the day) as a LOF Service Tech. They wanted us to bust out oil changes in less than 15 minutes per unit. Pay was 0.3 flat rate. Including a 27 Pt. MPI. Which was bs. No tire rotation or brake check tho. Recommendations we would make $1 commission on wiper blades and air filter, fluid flushes $5 for coolant and $5 for transmission Big whoop. Man I don't miss those days, too many nights on Ramen noodles lol. I enjoy your content man keep it up.

      Sounds just like Toyota lol they expect a car in and out for an oil change and MPI in 15 minutes, they would give us a $3 bonus for selling cabin filters that they charged 70$ for all while paying us minimum wage. I definitely do not miss those days.

    I’ve been using hex keys to measure brake pads. Easier to stick between the pad and rotor, and usually everyone has a set.

    Some shops have big spot mirrors mounted on the inside of the entrance. You can use that to check your rear lights.

    I bought my 2018 Rav4 three years ago. The first two years I had to take my car to the Toyota dealer for the oil changes. The oil in the engine was overfilled. I had to drain about a quart of oil to bring it to the correct level. The Toyota dealer keeps texting me to bring my car in for the oi changes and car maintenance. Now I do my own car oil changes and car maintenance.

    I work for ford and we try to shoot the cars out as fast as possible and usually we check the turn signals without getting out of the vehicle. We check the functionality of the windshield wipers and the sprayers and pop the hood then we get out. We also check the battery, the coolant level, the air filter, top off the windshield washer fluid, and check all the other fluids. Then lift it and do the oil change and the tire rotation (if they ask for the works service). We also do and detailed inspection of the undercarriage of the vehicle including the engine, transmission, brakes, and suspension.

      The dealer where I have my vehicle serviced (Tousely Ford) uses a "grease pit". Oil change and underbody inspection is done AT THE SAME TIME as the "other" services. At this dealer, "Quick Lane" means QUICK!!

      Technically you're supposed to use a torque wrench but 90% of the time, especially if you've been doing this for a while, you can just go by feel. Most Toyotas have a steel oil pan as well, so stripping the drain plug isn't a major concern. Chryslers and Hondas are the ones you really have to watch out for.

    As a lube tech one thing I always do at the beginning before I do anything is make sure there is no check engine light on. If it is on I go in and ask the customer if they want me to scan the check engine light for them. That way when I’m done with the service the customer can’t come back and say my check engine light wasn’t on before you serviced my car.

    Its a hard living for sure! I took auto shop in HS & trained at GM school back in the 70's. ( u probably werent born). I live in the rust belt & its hard to make ur time if constantly fighting rust/frozen/broken parts. I landed up wrkn in factories. STILL, not sorry I can do most of my mechanical work myself. 😉

    If it's a rotate, I'll normally do the rotate as soon as I get it in the air, and check brakes while rotating. Also check for wear/damage/punctures while moving tires to their rotated position. Then I'll replace filter and complete MPI while oil drains. Not too different from your routine. I can hit lof/MPI normally in 8-12 minutes, lof/rot/MPI in about 12-14 minutes (if I don't have any upsell items to install or throttle body cleaning, etc.) Only time I get slowed down is if say brake pads are very uneven, and I pull the caliper off to check for frozen slide pins or piston, things like that.
    Been at a Toyota shop since early 2019 as express tech, transitioning to a upsell/low level line tech now, just waiting on them to hire my replacement so I can train them. Then move my box across the shop lol.

      If I rotate my own tires do I have to reprogram it. I stop going to Toyota dealer for services since my warranty was out and ever since maintenance I been doing it myself and writing down the mileage on when I replace what. But I haven’t found anything to tire rotation on google

      julio bello The TPMS doesn’t need to be reprogrammed. Just make sure your fill the tires with the proper air pressure. Check the door jam or the owners manual. Depends on the car but check the tire size, also if the tire is directional. If directional make sure to just rotate front to back but stay on the same side of the car. Unfortunately for my car I have a staggered set up and the previous owner bought directional tires so you can’t rotate them lol.

So far my camry has 124k and so far right now the car needs struts they gave me long last so I’m ordering the KYB Excel-G since I enjoy the ride quality of those and the durability.

      julio bello Which year is your camry? I wouldn’t buy after market wheels. If you are going to change them up look for a good set of used ones from offer up. Pretty sure you could get the newer generation camry wheels, should fit.

    Just did my first day. Was taking an older blazer through the car wash after the standard lube and inspection, I stopped to fold the mirrors in and unscrew the antenna. Got back in and went to put it in drive and the brakes went straight to the floor. What luck! My favorite part is the A/C when taking it through the wash being I get hot easy.

    We had a Honda rep stop in to showcase the engineered procedure for express oil changes. A couple of mistake proofing tips were: 1.) leave the 710 cap on the hood latch. 2.) Use the provided, fixed setting torque wrench (33 lb*ft) when tightening the oil drain bolt.

    C'MON man! You guys get toooo comfortable. Every tech I know skips the spare tire. And if the car is over a few years old, that spare will be damn near flat. I got burned once on that and it always gets checked when adjusting the tire pressure. I've got into the practice of releasing my MPI before working on any car so I have less chance of having to bring the car back in from upsales I have made, especially with alignments/ new tires / brakes / filters / belts / batteries / gaskets / and flushes. VWs and Audi's are very time consuming, but not as bad as BMW (stuff of nightmares)

    With the drain plug we used and inch pound torque wrench for a quick check of the oil drain plug

      I just tighten it "snug".......never had a problem in 60yrs of vehicle ownership!

    I was working at autoarea and a lady came in asking me if her car has an oil filter cause her mechanic said it didn’t but he did the oil change it was a toyota it was at that point that I realized id probably make a better mechanic than people already working in the field and i was right

    this gave me ptsd when i first started out as lube tech and had someone showing me how to do everything lol. good times but now i look at the lube techs as a bunch of animals that constantly need to be watched so no mishaps happen.

      @ if you can do any work on a pt cruiser then you can work on any car. i remember being a lube tech at dodge for a bit not my worst experience but definitely made my next dealership a walk in the park.

    Could you do a demonstration on where you place the lift arms on Toyota’s? I don’t have a lift so I use a jack and jack stands. I always thought you can only lift from the front and rear subframe lift points and at the pinch weld spots but I’ve been seeing how these asymmetrical lift arms reach all the way under the front subframe. Curious where you place them

      The pinch frame on driver and rear passenger side but sometimes you have to extend to the sub frame

    @Lets Drift Media, 12:05 I realize you may be doing this on your day off but is this in a shade tree shop or at the dealership? If at the dealership do they allow techs to wear sandals on the shop floor? Most auto maint paces require non-slip safety shoes. I was told they dont have to be steal toe but should be non-slip. Personally, I like my toes so I'll use my steel toe shoes. You just never know. Better to have an not need than to need and loose your toes.😉

    Cool info to share with people I'd still like to see you get the RO get the vehicle into to the building and situated on the two post and do the oil change and the inspection and the car back out and return the keys all in 10 minutes I think that's pretty unlikely. 10 minutes sounds more like a lube pit with three guys servicing 1 vehicle.

      It all depends how the shop is. But i was talking 10-15minutes from when you pull the vehicle in to pulling it out. Of course there’s gunna be dilemmas finding the vehicle/getting it out the parking lot etc

    Good tech. Meanwhile, back at VW, I would document any issues found during the service being provided, but I never would look at various items specifically looking for a problem, unless that's what the customer wanted. Thing is too that you can get screwed for not documenting things that aren't broken. So, in that regard, I do like the quick checklist sheet.

    The issue i had being a lube tech at a Toyota dealership was that they make you work in pairs for each car that comes in and if your partner made a fatal mistake then it would rollover onto you for not double checking his work.

      Yea, I was in a pair system too when i was on the lube rack, If i felt my partner wasn't reliable I would leave him with less crucial jobs like grabbing me parts, writing down recommendations, checking tire pressure/tread depth.

    Actually almost lifted a car into the air without setting the arms into the correct places and almost tipped the car over. My shop Foreman was rly chill but drilled it into me that I have to double check everything I do, because it could cost someone their life.

    At what point do you put the plug back in? I try to get the oil to come to a slow drip before I put the plug back. I've seen some guys put the plug back in while the oil is still steadily streaming.

    Bro , im trying to get into the industry , ive been going to trade tech school for almost 3 years, , i completed tech1, brakes, electrical, engine performance classes , im almost done with it. Currently taking suspension and steering class, we may have an hybrid / electrical class this fall. Anyways. I do want to start as a lube tech, i do have experience doing brake jobs , fluids, sensors alternators , water pumps and other stuff. Any suggestions where could i apply to? I already made a indeed resume. My current immigrant status is difficult tho, hopefully it get resolve in the future, just looking for a company or dealer that could hire me, do you have any suggestions, on where to apply , i live in LA/SGV area? I passed the ASE G1 test. If that helps

    Great video, but please get some safer shoes. They make a $10 brake pad tool to measure through the spokes of the wheel on inside and outside and zeroes out the thickness of the pad. I would measure tread depth 3 times each tire to see if the wear is unregular.

      @@darinp5612 Drum brake shoes are completely enclosed in the drum. Longevity wise they last a butt ton longer than disc brakes. 100,000 miles or more. Generally speaking, unless there's an issue you notice with them, time wise it's not worth it to pull the tires and drums to inspect something that's most likely going to be fine.

      @@1337penguinman absolutely wrong my friend. Braking systems work on a rough 70/30 percent system. Rear brakes level the car, true... What if the car is a manual? Do they park on hills and use the ebrake? How about pulling drums and checking adjusters, hardware, wheel cylinder boots and cups, ebrake cable attachment slide and bracketry? How about the pivot bracket and associates spring? I did this when you were in size 5's. Sit back, watch, read, and learn

      Darin Porter dude...that all may be true and nice in a perfect world where quantity is valued more so than quantity (which it should) but that’s just not reality where many of us work. My asshole boss is constantly hassling us to pick up the speed and move onto the next car so the dealership can make more money. If I sat there for every car/truck that had drum brakes and had to take the extra time to take off the wheel and inspect the drum brakes it would end up making my work experience awful because they would hound me nonstop to go faster. Not only that customers waiting want their car yesterday. Believe me it sucks that we have to cut corners, but that’s just how many businesses operate nowadays. Maybe the customer will get lucky some times and we’ll open that little hole to inspect the shoes some times but it’s just not happening at our location usually especially if they’re not getting a tire rotation. We’re one of the busiest dealerships in our region.

    hello thank you for this video. Wouldn't it be faster set a writing things down one at a time between your inspections. I was thinking about getting a voice recorder that way I can record everything and then write it down at the end what do you think about that is it the right way to go?
