The proper way to do it: Mask off around your headlight. Using small DA polisher/sander start with around 400-600 grit wet sandpaper if headlights are really bad and factory clear is pealing, add water and keep surface wet. Continue with 800-1000-1500-2000-3000-4000 sandpaper disks, after that, using the same small polisher use MF cutting pad with cutting compound, do this step 1-2, after that use medium to light polish with a foam pad. This will make your headlight look better than new. After you finished polishing degrease surface (headlight) with panel prep, and protect it with UV coating. Ceramic coating, gyeon trim q2, or any decent headlight UV protection coating u can find. This is how you get perfection.

I've used Sylvania headlight restoration kits several times now. Similar to your method (400,1000,&2000 grit wet paper, polishing compound and clear coat). NO buffers, all polishing done by hand (not that big a deal) and the results are spectacular! About $20 for the full kit with everything but the water.
I just used that same kit on my Subaru Forester 2003 headlights. Awesome product. I even has a compound rub similar to 3M. I even had enough clear coat for the other car. My 21 year old headlights look good as new. Would recommend.

Paul - Yes the headlights have to be removed and bring home inside and hug each one of them while sanding. There is just no clearance to wetsand the headlight thoroughly and evenly while it's still attached on the car. And it takes all day to get it done right. By the time you get done you will be so tired and pass out...
I do at least 1 set per day at work. To be honest mate, you made that more complicated than it needed to be. 1500 grit wet sand 5 minutes per light MAX! Then a midium cut "g3" with a hard foam pad. No marks at all would of been left. That's far too many unnecessary steps.
I restored my headlights using clear coat spray.. the paint left some areas hazy, I'm sure it was due to my novice technique. I'm going to sand off the clear coat and do your method. I'm over here in Europe, I can't find that Maguires wax, do you have any other recommendations? Thanks for the video!
The end result is like this because he stopped at 2000 grit sandpaper, you would get MUCH better results by going to 3000, then 5000 grit. However time is money, so I understand why you would want to stop at 2000 grit. Also, I find that M105 and a orange foam pad works very well to bring out the best result when polishing the marks from the sandpaper. The other issue with stopping at 2K grit is you can see rather clearly the sanding marks with the headlights on. This is a quick and effective way to get to a reasonable result though for the time and materials overall though. Good job!
I tested it on my preious truck. one headlight done like this, the other I added a clearcoat. The next year, the clearcoated one was still nice, the other was back to yellow
Veikra I sanded mine down, clear coat them both and they are clear as they were 3 years ago. Btw, my trucks always outside and in the sun. Clear coat is a must
Ive seen plenty of clearcoated headlights flake up fast.. Meguiars makes a spray coating for after buffing the headlights thats not an actual clear that works great.
Thanks for the video! Question. From my experience with many cars, it is always the headlights. I recently replaced the headlights on a 2012 Subaru Forester, they were beyond restoration due to cracking. The vehicle is driveway kept, with the taillights enduring the brunt of the Texas heat and sun, however taillights appeared brand new at 105,000 miles. The headlight were in pitiful condition. Finally my question! Is it the friction from the wind and road dirt (etc.) that leads to the deterioration of the headlights? Is it the heat of the bulbs? If neither, why don't taillights deteriorate on the same timeline as well?
You needed another step after the wool pad and compound, should’ve switched to a foam polishing pad and a polish like M205, that’s why the headlights still looked cloudy after you buffed them out with the wool cutting pad and compound, you introduced a haze to the plastic because of the aggressiveness. You did a good job removing the oxidation, but it needed more refinement, applying a sealant for protection is fine, but it’s only a short term solution at best, paint protection film or even 2K clear is the way to go.
This, and Meguiar's makes a great spray coating now that is fast and easy. The problem with no coating is that the plastic will fail again in a few months. It simply needs a clear coat after removing the oxidation.
Great result on the head lights. It’s the fastest I’ve heard you speak. Were you on speed? Ideally mask off, sand, leave smallest of scratch marks and re-clear coat to fill in or else it will be faded again in a few months.

Just some constructive criticism to better his results.
I agree 100%’ Most people don’t even post content on how to do things properly, and he’s taking time out his day to show people how he does it! So many keyboard warriors out here!
Shawn Warnick the reason he doesn’t seal it with a clear coat is because the same thing will happen. Clear coat peels, cracks, etches etc. Then you’ll have to sand it all off again, it easier to leave the clear coat off and when they start to turn yellow give them a quick polish (instead of unnecessary sanding). A quick polish is cheaper and sanding
I think you should suggest more affordable rotary polishing alternatives . I wouldn’t use that polisher for my minivan . Do standard grinders have suitable pads ?
Mothers aluminum mag wheel polish and a random orbit polisher. Better results and no sanding. I have tried both ways and the Mothers always looks better. Clear coat sealed after polishing and looks almost as good as new 2 years later.

The Rain X Premium headlight lens restorer kit works excellent! Plus it's around $20 with velcro drill chuck, sand pads 1500 up 4000 grit, buffer foam pad, polish, gloves, and lens protector/restorer wipes.
Glass likes to to pit over time and then become dull. While it doesn't yellow and haze it could look almost hazy from pitting... and well glass sucks for polishing.
Hmm.. having to do 10 minutes of light work every 5-10 years to get a brand new headlight look, or just have every single car with the two different glass headlights 🤔 That's a tough choice 🙄
I’m exhausted just listening! If my kids are crazy and the noise starts to get to me I just listen to this video for about 10 minutes and life becomes a breeze again.
I like your videos, you're pretty clear on what to do and you take it into detail. That being said, I was sorta disappointed that the finished products looked like they could have been buffed out more to get an even clearer finish to them. Maybe its the video but they still looked a bit hazy to me when they were done. Otherwise good job dude! Thanks for sharing!
asianphoenix808,Silicon Carbide sandpaper is MUCH harder than the plastic.Ideally, you'd want to polish with something similar in hardness on the Mohs hardness scale.Baking soda or chalk(calcium carbonate) would do a better job IMHO.
Hello if i wax my headlights will that avoid it from turning yellow ? I just bought some new ones and i want to prevent it from turning yellow , thanks
Yes! Trying to show the improved clarity in the daylight can be very misleading. I thought I had done an awesome job on restoring my headlights with vinegar and water to remove oxidation and wax to protect, but seeing it at night revealed all the imperfections. I guess if you’re looking for perfection, you’re better off just buying new headlights.
You can also use 303 UV Protectant (reapply every 4-6months). It can be used in between waxes and its more of a preventative maintenance. Good luck guys!
Use toothpaste and buffer wheel for 5 mins. Its gritty cleans and polish at the same time. Rinse and turtle wax. Done in ten minutes barely any cost and 3/4 time. Been using that for years on my old cars. Works just as good.
So, I need to get drill + buff kit, and turtle wax kit only? No risk of scratching or anything? And I can use buff kit and drill for something else? interesting. Will try.
After looking into lots of videos on how to restore my headlights I realized walmart will do it for like $25... Best money I ever spend considering mine were so bad I constantly was checking to make sure they were on.
If they are real bad it takes a few minutes to sand them, polishing them is fairly easy with a drill. Turtle Wax has a cleaner Sealant that works well to keep the lights looking GR8. $25 is a deal, some shops charge 2-3X that amount and some technicians don't really know how to do the work. .

Some headlights cost $2000. It's very expensive unnecessary route. Spend all your energy wet-sanding compounding and polishing for one full day (or two days) and they'll be like new headlights.
How do you clean out the inner part of the headlight? I have a 2011 Honda pilot and I spent time cleaning the exterior but it's still foggy on the interior. Do I just pull the whole thing out?
You gotta clearcoat it (non yellow, UV resistant, 2K clear with harder is probably the best), sand it again and then polish. Otherwise it will be back to yellow in no time.. Thought thats a critical step thats completely missed here. Definitely not a 10 mins job, more like 2 hours+
great video, love how fast this guy talks. manufacture's do not clear coat there lens. between the sun oxidizing and the road sand blasting is the reason for fogging/scratching
How do you go about flaking clear coat or peeling clear coat? Since I don't maintain my headlights as much would it be better to use the spray clear coat since I won't detail the car and pay all that much attention to the headlights everytime I clean the car
Good lord! Luke clearly explained why the were somewhat still cloudy due to the age of the car and the interior condition of the headlamps! I can tell you and the rest of the guys that have all thrown in there little jabs about the headlights still not being perfectly clear that I have a 2001 Lincoln Town Car and the inside of the headlamps are exactly as Luke described in being yellowed and have moisture built up in them that will absolutely give them a still somewhat hazy appearance regardless of how much you sand them and polish and clear coat the outside of the headlight lens!
I had done a customers car today and literally had this same issue of the slight yellowing being an interior problem. It was messing with me a bit not going to lie lol. But customer loved the results and gave an awesome testimonial!

I absolutely love how fast you talk! You don’t waste a bunch of my time with useless information. Great job!
The Rain X Premium headlight lens restorer kit works excellent! Plus it's around $20 with velcro drill chuck, sand pads 1500 up 4000 grit, buffer foam pad, polish, gloves, and lens protector/restorer wipes.
You know I remember when headlights were made out of glass, never had an issue with them fogging
just holding water, and pinholes :(
& they were cheap to replace. oem replacements of these headlamp boxes are ridiculously expensive.
Glass likes to to pit over time and then become dull. While it doesn't yellow and haze it could look almost hazy from pitting... and well glass sucks for polishing.
When maintained, like most things, they last for a loooonnnggg time. MAINTAIN!
Hmm.. having to do 10 minutes of light work every 5-10 years to get a brand new headlight look, or just have every single car with the two different glass headlights 🤔 That's a tough choice 🙄
How about trying out Mag& aluminum compound. work with out sanding
Don’t use your fingers use your palm.... you will
Leave grooves when you sand like this
Yes, or a flexible sanding block. In school, we would make flexible sanding blocks out of cheap flip flops. Just cut any shape you want!
Thank you, my babe had a go at the right inner headlight of his 430 and it took him an hour.. to be fair, he is thorough
Cute head-band! Did you get that from auto' geek or Obsessed garage?
We talk at the same rate, and I can understand him clearly. You all need to get on our level :)
Some people are slowww lol
This is a rare video that I DIDN'T have to speed up 1.5x his tempo is just right
you need help too
I sped it up to 1.5x
Hey..not everyone likes meth...
Is there anything with spraying on lacquer after sanding?
as an auto detailer looking for new consepets, i wouldn't say you did a great job.
You didn't do a great job of spelling concept
Is a consepet a pet that can form a concept?
What's your thoughts on using a spray on ceramic such as TW Hybrid Solutions spray ceramic to seal the headlights after sanding?
I’m exhausted just listening! If my kids are crazy and the noise starts to get to me I just listen to this video for about 10 minutes and life becomes a breeze again.
I dont have a power buffer. Can I use polishing compound ?
Saya tak suka sebab dia buat sangat cepat sampai lampu kereta itu belum bersih lagi
Hello if i wax my headlights will that avoid it from turning yellow ? I just bought some new ones and i want to prevent it from turning yellow , thanks
I'm here for coco!🙌🏽
Who's that?🤔
Yep, she is HOT!
Alternative to the power polisher?
Thanks for the video. Would love to see a before and after shot in the dark showing the difference in clarity.
Can you apply the polish successfully without the dewalt polisher?
This seems like it takes longer than 10 minutes but great demonstration none the less.
Will abralon pass work for the final grit?
Was never a problem with glass headlights !!
What shampoo brand you recommend and wax or products thank you
You can also use 303 UV Protectant (reapply every 4-6months). It can be used in between waxes and its more of a preventative maintenance. Good luck guys!
Every 4 6 months Jesus's Christ headlight are so fucked these days
My 1975 fords are still going
The genius of detailing .you are amazing again Wow!!!
Surely, it's not of 10 minutes work.
10mins x 5

Hey, can we use Laquer spray in place of clear coat spray after raging?
Use toothpaste and buffer wheel for 5 mins. Its gritty cleans and polish at the same time. Rinse and turtle wax. Done in ten minutes barely any cost and 3/4 time. Been using that for years on my old cars. Works just as good.
And no Cavities, Either.
So, I need to get drill + buff kit, and turtle wax kit only? No risk of scratching or anything? And I can use buff kit and drill for something else? interesting. Will try.
Having trouble finding Power Brite Polish. Any suggestions where I can find it
I remember your dad....he did those Micro-Machines commercials
🤣🤣🤣👍
Bro if the headlight is half damaged can you wet sanding only the damaged area or you wet sanding always the whole headlight?
I felt this was the most thorough video on headlamp restoration and I watched a half dozen !
Well done!
I made it all the way thru...
Didnt think I would...
Listening to this dude...🥴
After looking into lots of videos on how to restore my headlights I realized walmart will do it for like $25... Best money I ever spend considering mine were so bad I constantly was checking to make sure they were on.
Candice Taylor perfect. I am going to go to Walmart lol. Thanks!
If they are real bad it takes a few minutes to sand them, polishing them is fairly easy with a drill. Turtle Wax has a cleaner Sealant that works well to keep the lights looking GR8. $25 is a deal, some shops charge 2-3X that amount and some technicians don't really know how to do the work. .
Yeah, but why don't clear turn signal lenses fog or turn yellow?
Thanks for sharing the video! Nicely made.
Dude slow down. You should get a job in radio advertising. You know that voice that tells you the T&Cs...... Ifyoudontkeepupyourrepaypentsyourhomemaybeatrisk36repaymentsof£300permonthtotalrepaymentsblahblahblah.
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
I have a hand tool circular quite small to do all this so I m not using electric hopefully it'll turn out like this excellent tutorial thanks
still look kind of foggy after all was said and done
It's possible that the damage is too deep to be stripped.
Inside of the lens is weathered. Not much ya can do past what he did other than clear coat or replace the lens.
@@duhbaws2705 Inside is where it's foggy often .. can not do anything but replace with new
This guy is the Michael Jordan of buffing out cars.... I only have an angle grinder... may be too much... will just go by hand and if I can get any improvement at all over these yellow headlight lenses I'm happy. I subbbed.... these videos take time and effort
I did it the easy way. I just replaced both headlights with new. 80 bucks
Some headlights cost $2000. It's very expensive unnecessary route. Spend all your energy wet-sanding compounding and polishing for one full day (or two days) and they'll be like new headlights.
David Naylor I do headlight restoration for clients, I’m not going to buy all of them new headlights lol
alex - How much you charging for headlight restoration?
I wash shocked to see headlights are $800 each for my Acura :(
@@fastdude2002 shit I was too!!! To the junkyard I go!!!
Yeah easier to reclearcoat it why people think sanding and polish will help when the clear coats gone already yep it will be faded again in time
great video, love how fast this guy talks. manufacture's do not clear coat there lens. between the sun oxidizing and the road sand blasting is the reason for fogging/scratching
Exactly
Thanx Wilson, I’m always looking forward to your videos. I really like the way you explain the processes you use. Thank you again!
How do you go about flaking clear coat or peeling clear coat? Since I don't maintain my headlights as much would it be better to use the spray clear coat since I won't detail the car and pay all that much attention to the headlights everytime I clean the car
You're supposed to be the expert and I'm the layman yet I have done a much better job on my own car. Dude the lights are still foggy !!!
Hahaha yes they are, because the issue here was on the interior not the exterior
@@wilsonautodetailing got ya.
@@rickylighter6887 i dont think so.
This was more than likely the interior part of the headlight as to why it still looks a lil foggy.
Good lord! Luke clearly explained why the were somewhat still cloudy due to the age of the car and the interior condition of the headlamps! I can tell you and the rest of the guys that have all thrown in there little jabs about the headlights still not being perfectly clear that I have a 2001
Lincoln Town Car and the inside of the headlamps are exactly as Luke described in being yellowed and have moisture built up in them that will absolutely give them a still somewhat hazy appearance regardless of how much you sand them and polish and clear coat the outside
of the headlight lens!
I had done a customers car today and literally had this same issue of the slight yellowing being an interior problem. It was messing with me a bit not going to lie lol. But customer loved the results and gave an awesome testimonial!
.75 is actual speed
Omg, this kid talks so fast I think I had a seizure about half way through.
lol, ok! but he got it under 10min tho
Made me feel nauseous.
Might be a bit too much caffeine or energy drinks.
I like fast speaking!
Can I use paint thinners to clean?
GREAT VIDEO. AND A NICE SET OF LEGS!! 😎
My new 2020 Tundra came with 28,000 mi , highway road chip front end ! Headlights too , can this process erase the rock nicks ? Thanks appreciate your video's man !!
All the sanding steps are great. Only missing the last step, the clear coating one
Don't believe this guy, he did it so quick that the headlamp isn't clean yet
I have a fog light on the driver side that looks similar to when you were finished at a 1K grit. What should I do?
