      I have the Sony A7iii with a 24-70mm lens. I want to shoot football games and do football hype videos so I’m trying get the 70-200 lens to make that happen. Do you think that’ll do well with the sideline distance I’ll be filming from?

    • @petersarellas
      @petersarellas  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In my (rather limited) experience shooting football the 70-200 can be passable either on a crop sensor camera or if you get a range extender (I recommend you look into this). What might be a better bet for you is something like a 100-400mm on a small monopod. Ideally in that situation I’d want 2 bodies: one with a 100-400mm and a second with something wider (24-70mm range) so that you can get a bunch of different looks, but if you only have one body and a 70-200mm you can likely get the job done.

      Great video! I shoot Nikon, mostly stills, but also some football video. My video setup is the Nikon Z6 with the native 24-200 typically at f/11 as I am mostly outside :-) I have yet to try it indoors with basketball. 120 fps, 1/250 - 1/500, ISO to match. I haven't yet found a Picture Profile I like for video. Nikon is rather limited in useful choice, I think.

    I'm used to shooting football so I have plenty of space to move around. I filmed a tournament game yesterday and I had the 70-200 with me but I had to keep switching because it was a high school game and there was like zero feet to move around so I had to keep switching between the 17055 and the 70-200. This has helped with som insight and approach. Today is shoot #2 so we'll see how it goes. Thanks for making this video!

    I found that the best Sony video lens was the "18-105mm f/4" APSC lens. Very smooth and quiet zoom controls and can maintain f4 throughout the focal length (if you shoot wide open). Unfortunately, i sold that lens with my a6500 when i upgraded to the a7R2. I have tried a few lenses with my new a7R2 and ended up settling on the standard 16-50 APSC kit lens in manual focus at F/7.1. The F/7.1 creates enough a of DoF to allow the entire court to remain in focus (confirmed via focus peaking) even when zooming all the way in. This allows me to shoot in manual focus the entirety of the game and save a TON on battery power as well as avoid any focus hunting. It also comes with a power controlled zoom that actually work very well and is also quiet which is surprising for a small as it gets kit lens. As for other settings, i shoot in 1920x1080-60p MP4 (TH-cam ready) with shutter speed at 1/125th (as close to twice the frame rate as available: 60p x 2 = 120 or 1/125) and ISO around 3000 depending on the venue. I use video goggles to make sure i stay focused on the action (too easy to get distracted otherwise) and a USB remote for start/stop and zoom. I start/stop every time the whistle goes off to cut out dead times. this typically creates 70 or so individual MP4 files which I dump into "MP4 joiner" which creates a 7 to 8GB file ready for TH-cam upload. Editing not required. This saves me a ton of post time which makes a huge difference when shooting back-to-back games.

    • @petersarellas
      @petersarellas  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That’s a pretty solid workflow to turn around full game cuts quickly! That 18-105mm f4 lens is a beast for sure as well. Thanks for sharing.

      Hey, thank you for checking out the video. I’m almost always handheld with the camera strap pulled around my neck, but if I was on a long lens (ex. 70-200mm) that didn’t have any stabilization in it then I’d probably use a tripod or a monopod specifically for that. I also shoot on a gimbal sometimes but this is situational and definitely not something I regularly do when filming games or practices.

    Hi. Thank You for this very helpful video!
    I have 3 questions:
    1. What about AF settings? I just started my adventure with sports filming and I am wondering which AF mode will be the best. Center, wide etc... (my camera is sony a7r3).
    2. Are you using manual mode or some other?

    3. I am wondering if I should set the ISO to auto. What do you think about it?

    • @petersarellas
      @petersarellas  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Marek! I personally use continuous autofocus with the mode set to wide and set my iso manually. I find this autofocus to perform the best and feel that basketball is fast enough that im going to get more consistently useable results and miss fewer shots using autofocus. I recommend setting ISO manually rather than using auto as auto ISO will change your ISO levels without you consciously doing so just based on where you point the camera, and this will create differences in exposure and noise between clips from a game, and you’ll have to take more time in post correcting this later.

    • @petersarellas
      @petersarellas  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      So happy that you found the video helpful! These Tamron lenses work with a Sony a6400 and other APS-C sensor Sony mirrorless cameras as well, but will crop in by about 1.6x the focal length listed on the lens on an a6400 compared to an A7. This will make the Tamron 28-75mm the approximate equivalent of a 45-120mm on your a6400, and for sports, you may find that extra reach to be pretty helpful.

    • @petersarellas
      @petersarellas  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey there Sonny, 17-70mm might be a bit wide for basketball but not a horrible focal length for high school if you’re filming in the half court. For AF I usually use wide af and my A7iii picks up quite well but I can’t speak for the AF on the a6000 so you may have to experiment a bit to figure that out. Unfortunately if you’re filming directly under the basket with a 17mm lens there’s no way around the possibility of getting trampled. It’s happened to the best of us haha

      The 70-300mm for Sony isn’t a bad lens at all for sports. The focal length itself is great - what I don’t love about that lens is the variable aperture. That’s a very situational question depending on what conditions you’re shooting in and what you’re producing, but in general for sports videos of court sports I wouldn’t stray too far from my kit here in his video. Only thing is that with a cheaper body you may find a larger marginal increase in the quality of your image with f2.8 lenses rather than f4 lenses that could make the former worthwhile.

    HEY I HAVE A SONY FS5 AND SONY A7II. WHAT SETTING AND LENESE I SHOULD USE FOR SPORTS VIDEOGRAPHY

    • @petersarellas
      @petersarellas  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Firstly, that’s a pretty sweet set up! If you have two bodies like that I’d personally put a 70-200 on the main body, so in this case the FS5, and a 24-70 or something in that range on the A7ii to help you get wide shots and not miss anything if someone gets too close to you. That’s tough because with the FS5 being super 35 and the A7ii being full frame those 2 lenses will leave a gap in focal range where you don’t have any coverage, but I think those 2 lenses in some sort of combination are generally the best bet for most people if filming a sports with a field/court size similar to basketball or hockey (football and soccer will require longer lenses). For settings, I’d look to do 120fps for both cameras if possible with an overcranked shutter, but I also know that you’d have to drop the resolution quite a bit or record externally to get good 120fps slow motion on the FX5 and the A7ii only offers up to 60fps, so for practicality I might look to film in 60fps with both and just deal with that. If you really want 120fps you could upgrade your A7ii to an A7iii or even swap it for an a6300-a6500, but 60fps is certainly passable as well. Wishing you the best of luck!

    • @_keyonrobinson_

      The higher your shutter speed is, the darker the image will be. And you don’t want to raise your iso too high to avoid grain so you have to kind of balance it all out so you can create the best image. I usually stick to 1/320 - 1/500 for basketball

The Sony mirrorless cameras are usually pretty good and affordable, something like the a6000 or a6100 could be a good fit for you but you should definitely look into each a6000 series cameras specs and make an informed decision.

      It’s tough because the 70-180mm 2.8 is a stop faster but the lens itself doesn’t have image stabilization, so you’ll likely have to use it with a monopod or tripod rather than handheld, where as you could use the 70-200 f4 handheld regularly with no problems paired with a body that has ibis.
