Scream Factory charging $33 for their latest releases is also getting to be a little much. Gotta wonder when we will reach a breaking point for collectors with these prices skyrocketing.
The time when you said the quality/quantity began to suffer almost perfectly coincides with Lionsgate Studios being spun off into a separate company from Lionsgate.
Things have been a mess since Walmart became the "go to" spot for physical media and Steelbooks. The stores around me don't even have media sections so we're stuck with the online ordering. Unlike Best Buy, there's no in store pickup, no free shipping and lord knows how damaged your order will show up. Also, the scalpers are having a field day and popular titles sell out a day or so into pre-order. It's really just become a huge hassle to figure out how to get anything for a decent price and in good condition so if I can't grab it through Orbit, I usually just pass. I feel like Lionsgate came out hot with the Steelbooks and just dropped the ball. It's a shame because I had quit Steelbooks, too but Lionsgate had definitely gotten me back into it. I'm definitely going more towards slipcover editions or just having a nice release of the movie.
As a "newer" collector that missed the golden years of the Lionsgate steelbooks, I'd be thrilled if they went back and re-released all of the top tier steelbooks and others that they put out that many of us new collectors never got a chance at.
Django Unchained is one of my favorite Tarantino films, I would love to see it get a 4K release with the others. It's shocking that that and The Hateful Eight haven't gotten released with how recent they are.
Absolute yes to the first 3. And I'd also love it if they would re-release some more from the vault, Ran and the Wicker Man in particular since those are gorgeous, out of print and there's no standard 4K copies so they're just unavailable in the US. Apocalypse Now also should never be out of print either.
Best Buy pulling out of physical media must have played a part in it. Lionsgate also isn't doing great at the box office like you said. Could be financial troubles.
Lionsgate have for a long time been a bit of a B-Movie studios with good movies in between. Their recent outings would have fared better in a 2010-2012 climate than today.
Great list. I totally forgot about See No Evil. I was a Kane fan so I definitely would love a 4K Steelbook. Also we need a 4K Steelbook of The Condemned with Stone Cold Steve Austin. Saw that in the theater as well because I was also a Stone Cold fan and that movie blew me away
Also this they randomly rereleased the Dredd, American Psycho, Hacksaw Ridge, and Hell of High Water steelboooks. Which as someone who just now got into this was hoping theyed do something like that again with at least something like a LaLa Land or Ran, or even Apocalypse Now steelbooks since even the normal 4k of Apocalypse now is becoming hard to find.
Prices are high this is why I pick and choose what I buy and I feel that is worth buying and if it comes to lowering the prices at least lower it to $29.99 for steelbook 4K and $24.99 for the standard 4K and $19.99 for the blu ray and $14.99 for the dvd
I couldn't care less about Steelebooks, but I do agree about prices being too high and more catalog titles coming to 4K. Another thing I hate is the whole limited quantity crap that tends to occur with the likes of Vinegar Syndrome and Arrow.
@midlevelmedia Maybe Arrow moreso, but Vinegar Syndrome tends to go OOP fairly quickly. If a title goes OOP in five years or less, that's too quick in my book.
@@midlevelmediaMost likely will be StudioCanal in the UK and Lionsgate in the US. I'd like to see Kino do the US release since they have a licensing deal with StudioCanal.
movies that benefit from 4k are movies that got old blu ray transfers when blu ray was still a new format and the saw movies apply....i have every saw film on individual blu ray releases and saw 2,3,4 and 5 would look fantastic on 4k...the original saw i have that 4k they put out a few years ago and i was very happy with the transfer.
With everything going digital, the studios are losing revenue from new movie releases. Less people attending theatre, less people renting, no physical copy to purchase... they're losing revenue AND the writers haven't had an original plot (with rare exception) in almost two decades.
Maybe the fact you got to pay $19.99 for these great steelbooks made them realise they just weren't worth the money to produce for the small return they got... add that to increases in transport and production costs and an apparent shortage of the correct materials to make steelbooks, probably meaning they only concentrate on the ones that will make a big profit or are seen as 'much more expensive than the Amaray and not worth it' and it looks like a nasty _perfect storm_ situation.
I think the lack of markets with the loss of Best Buy, and Walmart not really taking up the slack, is making them think twice about spending much time on older catalog titles. As for prices, we're just going to have to get used to it. Physical media is now a niche collector's market. Back in the day a lot of laserdiscs were around $40 each, $129 for a nice big box like what Disney would do. We're heading back that way, like it or not. The only Crash I want to see on 4k is the Cronenberg one.
Lionsgate have lost a lot of money this year. That is what's happened... With their last 4 theatrically released movies, Lionsgate have taken a shit kicking at the box office and when you lose that much money in exhibition revenues, plus promotion/advertising costs, you cut back in other areas. Unfortunately, that belt tightening includes making catalogue physical media as well and higher prices for what their latest releases will cost you.
@@OrbitCruz28 Yep and it ain't over yet... "The Killer's Game" starring Dave Bautista, Sofia Boutella, Pom Klementieff, Scott Adkins, Ben Kingsley and Ice Cube is the picture they opened this weekend. It made a mere $2.6 million on a $30 million budget plus P & A costs. Guy Ritchie's "The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare", is Lionsgate's only film that somewhat bounced back from underperforming in theatres, finding an audience and a prolonged run on digital VOD in May stretching through July/August. Physical media at a higher price point than what you'd expect from the studio, came out on June 25th. Bottom line: Lionsgate, even on mid-low budget ($30-60 million) feature films have had a lousy year at the box office... A worldwide box office of $27,255,965.00 was far short of Ungentlemanly Warfare's break even point and it was their most successful movie this year. If they can't turn it around, the studio's shingle's gonna come down and you're gonna see a fire sale like you've never seen.
I dont know why boarderlands bombed maybe timing. Its a videogame and great actors i cant wait to buy it and watch. Also there is saw 11 coming out next September so they might release a set after 11 comes out

I want the “old Lionsgate” back…
I'd like to mention just making more copies in general of their line. I know I missed out on titles just because there wasn't enough to go around. Like you I feel all movie studios especially Sony are not only price gouging, but purposely making very little little to go around causing FOMO and forcing people like me to go into debt. I have spent so much for fear of missing out. It has drastically affected me financially and it's unsustainable. Even though I have bought a lot I have still missed out on titles. Horrible.
