Very helpful! My grandfather whose turned 93 this month and is a veteran has this fishing reel. Penn 85 and I want to fix it up for him, one day I'll use it fishing but for now just keeping it in good condition is good enough for me. I'll be checking the website to see how to send it in for fixing~
I got one of these 85 Seaboys for 8 bucks the other day and it looks brand new inside and out. I’ve gotten addicted to these old Penn reels! Great videos Sir! I’ve got my 14 year son cleaning and servicing our reels with your help.
Thanks for the note. That is the spirit of this channel to show others, including your son, how to keep these reels fishing. Best wishes while continuing to work on memories. - Dennis
Brilliant video. I still have my 85 from when I was 8 (now 49). I now use it for high altitude kite flying. Was a bit hesitant to service it but now this video gives me full confidence.
Mine’s been hanging up for years. It wouldn’t reel so I removed the line and found that the line had gone behind the spool and cracked the spool. I’d like to clean it and use, but I need a replacement spool. Great video. Looks like something I might try. 👍
You can do it - You should be able to find a replacement spool on eBay. The metal ones won't break and are a direct replacement for the plastic ones, so you can switch over if you like - Dennis
Glad it helped. You just need a little TLC with these and they will last a lifetime, or until you crack the non-gear side plate! Thanks for watching and for your note - Dennis
I just got one of these from a friend who saved it from a landfill Its the chocolate color, with a metal spool, white plastic handle, and its full of cloth line. I still appreciate all your efforts and videos. I'm look forward to following along while i clean this reel up. I believe it is one that i could put into service again. What size of modern monofilament would be best for this reel? I'd likey be using it off my boat fishing inshore. Thanks!
Hi Sammy - I have done separate videos on the 310, 320 and 330 GTI reels - if you search TH-cam, you will find them under Penn GTI - Thanks for asking - Dennis
Hi Dennis how are you great video I have heard of this reel but never had one I used to have a Penn 112 h reel you don't see these reels any more it's a shame
Yes - Penn made the 85 and the Senator for over 50 years and then decided it was time to move on when they moved operations to China. Those oldies are still fishing today. It is a shame - Dennis
Hiii Dennis ..... I have my Penn 330 LD bought long time ago ( I didn't remember ) ... My Question is , is there anyway to fix the Level Drag ( LD ) for not really functioning as well .... Thank for sharing - Paul.
Yes, but I need more information on why it is not function to help with the way to make it work. Almost every mechanical devise can be made to work again. It is a question of what is broken and if parts are available - Dennis
Dennis, this video was great. I have two 85's that were my Dad's (which hadn't been fished since the 90's) and when attempting to clean and service the first one....once the anti reverse paw and spring fell out I went looking for a youtube video. The reel is completely back together and working great. I also have his spinning reel a the drag tightening nut is Penn so I am assuming the rest is. The side says 800 Saltwater. Penn has not responded for information on this reel. Have you any information on this?
Thank you fort he kind feedback. Yes - If you can send me a picture or two to my email - 2ndchancetackle@gmail.com I will try to identify it for you. Penn mostly used 8000 and not 800 to identify their larger reels, so it is hard to guess. A picture or two should help - Dennis
Jesus - Please send a note to my email 2ndchancetackle@gmail.com and let me know the reels you are interested in having serviced. I will provide you the rates and details - Thank you for asking - Dennis

Glad to hear you are going to give this reel a 2nd Chance! The best line is 20-25 pound mono for ocean fishing - Dennis
@@2ndChanceTackle great, thanks again Dennis.
Hey I have an old Penn GTI and was wondering if you’d do a video on it

Hi Rodrigo. Watch this video for starters th-cam.com/video/sYaZXEU52WY/w-d-xo.html. Thanks for asking - Dennis
Question? Does the Penn 60 spool fit the Penn 85??
Yes they are interchangeable - It will also fit the DelMar 285 reel - Dennis
I have a couple of reels how much do charge a hour

friend I have a Penn n 85 which line to use in (mm) and what the pound of the stick? Thanks in advance!
about 350 yards of .045 line - Dennis
@@2ndChanceTackle thank you very much, the monofilament or multifilament line?
Monofilament. If you are using braid, the capacity is about 30% greater
@@2ndChanceTackle Ok. And Thank you ! I'm here from Brazil and here I didn't find any information about Penn 85 sea boy but thanks for helping me!
To me this reel looks like a 78 or 79 with a star drag
They are similar and in the same "Sea" line models from Penn
