Ohmygosh!!!!! You have just made a woman in the northern reaches of Norway 🇳🇴 very happy today!!! I used to live in NYC as an art student when John first opened his shop. That is where I’d go to fuel up my creative energies and linger in a space that could as likely have been inside one of my own late night dreams.

Forgive me for saying this........but usually interior designers have debatable art on their walls.......either too easy and pleasing to look at( without substance) , or too pretentious. HERE I saw magnificent art and portraits hanging everywhere!!!

My gosh this place looks like the house from Stanford and sons. But!!! Art and design are in the eye of the beholder. As long as he loves and enjoys it more power to him.

I remember when Margaret Russell featured another of John’s apartments in Elle Decor and in her book “So Chic,” describing the oddities and found objects in his space. It was enchanting then. Wow what a beautiful space! So much character, personality, and great use of color. I love that red/orange light emanating from the next room, in the beginning. Such a nice contrast against the more cooler neutral colors. Also a great use of vintage, and slightly modern... Thank you once again Quintessence, and Suzanna!

How about loving the decaying daffodils and using the childrens water colors for painting-he’s so cool-he gives a flip for formalities and has a really distinctive taste. My sister showed me his shop in NY-been a fan since that magical day!

I love the decay and the juxtopostion of finds, it's quite unusual in the US to find 'real' shabbiness as opposed to bought shabbiness ,, It's more usual in say ,, Britain/Europe , great video girls thank you xoxoxo

so true!! I am so attracted to British design because of this. there is such a cozy charm to english cottages because the shabbiness is beautiful and comes from being lived in.
Such a magical place full of collection love it! And at 1:17 in the upper left corner, I have the exact same green jar, ( there's a better image in the AD spread) but I had mine turned into a lamp.

Seems like a nice curious guy, organized hoarding.
The apartment is a delight. As are his curiosities and collections! Full of imagination and surprise! But with a huge recognition and appreciation for all things old and even decayed. And real art! I can’t bear to hear interior designers describe a cheap framed print from Ikea as artwork. It’s not and never will be. It may look great on the wall but to call it art is a misnomer. The word art in this context should be reserved for something original, it doesn’t even have to be beautiful or expensive. But there’s a massive difference between an original item which has been created and lovingly displayed, and an item which has been mass produced in it’s thousands and hung on a wall. It has every right to be there but don’t call it art work. It’s not.
John is so very creative and has a very special eye and talent! Glad you enjoyed our visit!

You have to! I am on a mission to try and get your North American hosts, and subscribers to call their yards, gardens! To call a beautiful garden a yard, is so misleading, inappropriate and doesn’t do justice to the glories of a lot of the gardens you show us.
