    That Fairmont that Glidden was driving in this video was eventually bought by a guy in South Florida in the mid '90's. He painted it blue and silver and called it the "Star Car". Even though he removed the letters, you could still see the shadow "Pro 2" on the lexan windows. He ran it at Desoto Speedway in Bradenton, Fla in the Super Pro Bracket Class...Back then it was running 9.50's in the 1/4 mile.

    The Fairmont that later carried the PRO 1 on the window, yeah!

      The 78 car was ran for 3/4 season roughly. Never lost one single round of competition with that car. Then Glidden went to Plymouth with the Arrow car for 79. He was actually testing the Plymouth while still racing the Ford in 78. The 1980 PRO1 Fairmount was a different car. The car in this video was painted by Albert Clark, the owner of Clark Chevrolet in Cayuga, Indiana about 10 miles north of me. Clark raced in Pro-Stock at the time too in a Camaro with Don Coonce as the driver.

      The Fairmont that would also go full 52-week calendar yr without losing a single round!

    Shepard would have been a very, very successful pro-stock racer if his career hadn't been cut short by tragedy. His record was outstanding during the time he did race.

      At this point, team Reher Morrison-Shepard hadn't found the Chevy top fuel heads that powered them to their championships. When they put water jackets in the heads and dialed them in, finally someone could beat Glidden. Too soon in passing, Lee is sorely missed.

    It's amazing that in 1978 these top fuels are running a flat 6 and today we got pro-stockers running 6.99's.

    Bob Glidden & his family were probably the hardest working people in Pro Stock Racing. They were always willing to take a few moments if you wanted to approach them in the pits. Because he was so successful, the NHRA tried to factor his car such that he would be penalized for his hard work. All brands should have to run with the same engine size & weight factors. Unfortunately, the same thing happens in other racing venues. If you're too successful, you will be penalized.

      that sucks but the way it still is if Chevy can't changed the rules so that they can biggest reason I am the way I am with Ford to Chevy

      I got to see the family work and yes they did! They earned it win! Unlike force doing it with money! Bob Glidden was my all time favorite!

      I wish Ford hadn't withdrawn their support from the Pro Stock cars, however, in my opinion, NHRA is so political, it's not worth my time anymore. My brother & I now go to Vegas for the PSCA finals in November. PS, I have to agree with you. Bob Glidden was one of the main reasons we looked forward to going to NHRA races.

      Maybe with a few exceptions here and there over the years ("Dyno Don" Nicholson in the mid to late 70's with a Mustang II and Frank Iaconio in 1985 and '86 with the T-Bird) Bob Glidden was always the main driver and team for Ford in Pro Stock Racing. Even though he ran a Plymouth Arrow for 1979 and still won the championship with it, I will associate the Glidden Family with Ford and he is still my all time favorite driver in any NHRA pro category.

      So, WHEN Will Multi-Car Ander$on be Penalized like Glidden by the NHRA?

  • @Tiptoetherat
    @Tiptoetherat 11 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Believe it or not the Fairmont actually wasn't that bad with the aero. A lot of Boxy cars have decent aero the 80s NASCAR Monte Carlo, the Oldsmobile Cutlass pro stocks of the 90s, etc. The NHRA gave weight breaks for the bigger cars back then as well. and yes Bob was THE MAN with his Ford Motors.

    • @happydays8171
      @happydays8171 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      They're doing 156mph, as opposed to 210+ mph today. So, back then being aero wasn't a big concern.

    Glidden really had to have been making some serious horsepower to be over a tenth quicker with such an unaerodynamic box with that Fairmont.

    There all kinds of cars you can drive on the street and do drive not the street. That beat every pro stock back in 78. What if you could transport yourself and back in time show to the event in your car. Smoke the whole field. You be faster than top fuel. Amazing

    Ford and GM could race any combo while Chrysler was forbidden to campaign their Hemi. Look at the hot mess pro stock today.

    • @MGB18
      @MGB18 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's not true. The FIAT-chryslers were allowed to run their 426's in mid size cars. The NHRA introduced new rules in 1972 allowing for small block V8's, in compact cars carrying favorable weight. Want to talk about not fair? The FIAT-chrysler girls protesting the Ford 427 Cammer Hemi for NASCAR. And eventually in drag racing too. As for Pro Stock today? It's a total joke! Which is why it's dying fast. Most fans do not want to see only GM's and a couple FIAT-chryslers. NHRA needs to change the rules back to small block power for Pro Stock. That'll entice Ford to jump back into Pro Stock with sponsorship, and FIAT-chrysler to sponsor more also. That's the only thing that will save Pro Stock.
