- This is the story of Don Schumacher, former drag racer turned mega team owner. In this exclusive interview for Legends: The Series, there are two different settings for this exclusive episode. Just five days after the original interview was filmed, Schumacher was diagnosed with cancer which eventually hit stage five. After enduring the hell of radiation treatment, Schumacher returned to his life at the drag strip and granted a follow-up interview. Whatever preconceptions you might have had of Schumacher might change when you see him open his heart in a way like never before. Schumacher discusses his days as a Funny Car driver and also talks about his extended family of racing. You won't want to miss the emotional post-cancer interview.

I met Don years ago. He is awesome and sharp as a knife. A really great guy. Thanks Don for your chassis advice, hand shake, and that autograph on the poster I have hanging on the wall. Thank you to the people who made the movie.

RIP Don. In the mid 60s I worked for Fiberglas LTD, and built one of his funny car bodies. He came to the shop often, and was a great guy. Many years later I saw him at a race and approached him saying “I’m sure you don’t remember me but I worked for Ron Peligrini at Fiberglas LTD”. He told me he did remember me and it was good to see me again.

When I was a kid there was a drag strip literally i n my backyard. I would sit down at the turn around curve with my friends and talk to all the drivers. Harrell, Garlits, Shumacher, Prudhomme...all of them.
One night we were all at Don's ramp truck while he was hooking up to tow back.
He opened one of the side doors, pulled out a big box of pictures. Handouts and 8x10 B&W glossies. He said to all of us kids... pic 2 each.
I was probably 10 at the time. I'm 54 now.
Years ago I was laid off and broke broke. Sold those pics on ebay almost 20 years ago for a couple hundred. Made the mortgage payment and saved my house.
Don was always cool as fuck!

I Have Don Schumacher '' Stardust '' his elary funny car model 1.25 scale build it to the same detail as the car about 30 years ago and still got it in top conditions am 57yo now and am from Australia .

I met the man and his son several times. They are great. I understand they have busy schedules so I try not to bother much. Never got a no from them. In my opinion drag racing is the closest sport to the fans.

Me and a friend of mine was at Commerce Ga, Don was getting in his car out in the parking lot to leave, He actually took time to sign our Army Hats and Thanked us for getting him to sign them he's such a Great Guy for taking time to talk to us for quite a few minutes and Sign our Hats he talked to us like he knew us forever ! A memorable experience chatting with him !
He has an open house at his shop in Brownsville before the US Nationals. You can see his shop and meet Don.

seen him race at baylands in Fremont CA. he won the race but blew the motor as he passed the finish line, the fiberglass body flew up into the air, the people ran out onto the dragstrip to get souvenirs they won't let u that anymore, those were the days, the motor had a big hole in the side of the block when they towed back to the pits!

great video I am a bracket racer in Mn it is the best worst thing my dad introduced my brother and I to is drag racing it is the only reason for us to go to work and it isn't only the car it is the truck and trailer payments but the maintenance on the car it keeps us broke and that was dads goal to keep us out of other trouble and it worked and we thank him every day for the addiction.

I was just a kid in 1974 but I remember when gas almost doubled in Price to $1.00 per gallon .. Plus a recession too..
Like him or loath him,the sport of drag racing would be a poorer sport without him.
One thing about Don Schumacher is that no matter how busy he is, if you see him in the pits he will always take time for a photo and a few words with you. Very appreciative of his fans. Stay clear on race day though!

Nothing wrong with hard work, deadlines, and having to get things done with no excuses if you don’t. Farmers deal with this every day. You have to.
I agree with would like to meet him. I was allowed to tour his shop years ago. Don Schumacher, actually ran more than one car back in the beginning of Funny Car Racing. So, John Force did not have an original idea. And John Force knew he was up against wealth many years ago as well. If you don't have millions to invest you will not race succcessfully in NHRA Top Fuel dragsters or Top Fuel Funny Cars. Just the facts folks.
I just decided you must be one hell of a father. You have a lot to be proud of. I went back to racing after my cancer. I modified my road-racing cars to be driven with one leg. What Don says about treatment is very true. It is barbaric. And you do think about it more then you should. I am building my first drag car. But I had a relapse.

John said it best some years ago, "Don Schumacher cannot beat me, he does not personally race me. He pays other people to race me. He could get in a funny car if he really wanted to and race me but he doesn't". You did see John Forces 151st Wally didn't you Don? Yep, 17 championships too now and still going.
As many times as he kept saying “I care…” he comes across as completely insincere. Someone who really is sincere about caring for people only has to say it once, or not at all. I think he he wants to be that way and knows he isn’t. Hence, continually repeating it.

If it wasn't for Don, John, Connie, I wonder if drag racing would have survived. Now with Covid, winning a fuel race pays $15g. Down from $50g last year, this is a real challenge.

When I was a kid, he brought his funny car to my school, Lines Elementary in Barrington, Illinois. I think I had heard of him. Back then, in my mind, it was all about Big Daddy Don Garlits. I recall the big truck and starting the car. It was loud and fun. As a kid, it was all about mini bikes and cars.... it still is. All of the hoopla about phones and social media doesn't make any sense.
