Diverting in a Fighter Jet is Hard

- It turns out a divert in a fighter jet in the middle of nowhere Arkansas on a Saturday night can be a bit more complex that you'd think. 8Flight solves it handily though: eightflight.com

Great video to show my students how not to plan a flight.
Rapidly losing respect for your discipline as an aviator. This is just straight up irresponsible, presumably for ego and clicks. Wish you the best, but this kind of crap often ends badly even in a bonanza, much less a jet. I think I’ll stick with Aviation 101; that dude puts 100x more planning and discipline into flying than this demonstrated and he’s flying around at 100 kts in a 172. Also, literally nobody cares that you have the fastest “whatever” on the planet, but I’m betting there are a lot of people that care about you making back to the ground alive each time you fly. Good luck.
He's been recording and sharing irresponsible stuff for years now. It's really frustrating, especially knowing that there are many student pilots out there that are going to possibly see and think that a lot of his bad habits are okay. Anything from not properly producing an in depth flight plan (as seen on this video) flying with his feet up on the panel while in IMC, not utilizing a checklist (because his brain is simply too big and amazing to use one /s), you name it. I'm not nearly as intelligent as this man, but even as an early stage aviator myself it's incredibly frustrating to watch some of his bad habits. Yet I keep watching and giving him views simply because I want to have a reminder of what type of aviator I don't want to become.
Very curious about your briefings and how structured or in depth they are or aren’t. I recall going through my first flight, ground school and licensing with a former USAF pilot as my instructor. He always preached repetition and doing the same things and procedures the same way every flight, every walk around, every brief. Our briefings were hyper detailed. I mean I used to have a kneeboard full of notes, frequencies, quick references, checklists and a clear picture in my mind of every minute of the flight including unexpected emergencies and weather.
He always used to preach If you ever say “I think I can or It should” you need to stop right there, reset your brain housing group to idle, ask yourself is this the day I want to die and if not, go home and live another day.
It’s been decades since I’ve flown other than a passenger but I still use many of his lessons even when I plan road trips for business or pleasure. Stay Safe out there folks.
A very good way to look at things in my opinion. I've been apart of a couple military briefings with the 34th and 37th Bomb Squadron stationed at Ellsworth, Just as you said it goes super in depth.
I will keep this in mind when I start my flight training for PPL.
He doesn't have any structure to them as you can see that by having ATC literally file your IFR as a popup
Whats the deal with the supper short, inconclusive videos? Good videos, but it isn't really worth watching 12min of what feels like the mid excerpt of a longer, full video.
Also, for one who appears to be an accomplished aviator, why are you taking pre-flight planning risks like this? Its a bad look, and dangerous. There's just no reason not to wait a day or so for weather to clear or file and plan the fight better. I've done it many times as most have, and its far the better way to tackle flights and weather like this, I'd expect someone of your experience to know something that elementary.
He has turned his great channel in to some kind of clickbait monster. This is all about making money now and less about the love for aviation.
This man titled his video fully knowing it's not a fighter jet, just to get people to engage in the comments saying it's not a fighter jet.
What a time to be alive.
this is no man. this is a child.
🤣and yet you still commented.
one of the best comments in the thread@@keemez
Dude all his videos are clickbait.
Yea, exactly. He keeps doing that as if he’s in some goofy dream. This cheap tin can from Russia is nothing but a trainer.
These videos feel like an accident waiting to happen... Formation flying with little experience in a high performance jet in marginal VFR... Please take care, that is dangerous.
And stupid. Ancient Chinese proverb: He who try to fly like Maverick, often die like Goose. The plaque for second place is in the morgue, guys. With all due respect, you’re UPT washout wannabes, and it’s doubtless this “experiment” will end well. Good luck, and happy trails, be sure and drive ‘em all the way to the accident site, as they say. I feel sorry for ATC having to listen to this nonsense.
I agree. Narcism at its best.
Eh, their “formation “ is in the same county. Not like they’re doing 3’ fingertip.
The formation is fine :). Just gotta have backup plans ready to go in the event of weather issues. Those jets drink fuel like there's no tomorrow lol but it all turned out well in the end@@perrylindsay4144
Hey Retread, my comment was purely about their “formation”. It wasn’t intended to be an all encompassing comment on the obvious problems with the flight. Just a little gig at civilians flying formation. Sorry you didn’t get it.
I would take note of what all the other aviators in the chat are saying; there is a reason we are all saying the same things. Don't let ego be your downfall. I've found you recently and the couple videos I have seen really show a lot about how little you plan these flights and your lack of respect for flight safety. I would seriously reconsider your approach to flying especially if you are going to continue with something this high performance. Keep the blue side up.
This seems like really poor planing in marginal VFR. Luck is not an effective flight planning tool.
I don't think you know what marginal vfr is
Appears to be poor flight planning in a jet with little endurance. Fly away from the storm and land to get fuel. Low on fuel is an emergency waiting to happen and looking for a hole in the sky is a bad idea.
Stupid leaving that bottle of water up under the windscreen. Many bad things could happen if that travels around in the cockpit.
Yeah it was driving me crazy! I've flown gliders with all kind of junk in the cockpit (water, snacks, maps...) and all secured... hit a turbulent patch, (or in the glider enter a turning thermal) and you sure do not want a water bottle flying though the cockpit.
L39 is not a fighter jet.
Incase anyone is curious its a Jet Trainer for future fighter pilots. You could argue it is a Attack aircraft though as some countries do put smaller rocket and gun pods on it for CAS roles.
A seaplane that has the optional wheels installed rather than the pontoons is still a seaplane. Matt's plane obviously does not have weapons installed but the same model is used with weapons installed by some countries.
Very interested in how you flew yourself into that hole to begin with. Weather briefing? Come on guys. You have more experience than that.
Am I the only one that's still looking for the fighter jet in the video?
Lots of poor flight planning and lots poor practice. Painful to watch.
This kind of flying would drive me nuts. Why would you opt to bash around VFR at 17,500, instead of filing and flying IFR in the flight levels from beginning to end? Poking around for holes to fly through is for Skyhawks and Cherokees, not jets.
Not a great practice in the Skyhawks and Cherokees either. But I agree, this was stupid.
These videos have TNflygirl feeling to them. Behind the aircraft, second guessing your decisions, low fuel concerns, weather.
I think this is a how not to fly video; a flight of two short range jets low, VFR in marginal weather, with a blabbering woman in the back seat; this is eventually not going to have a happy ending Im sad to say
I agree about everything except the blabbering woman. She was the smartest one involved.
The lady in the back, does she not of O2? do yall in the front with the helmets and mask?
No hatin, just curious.
Who’s the guy in the other jet? Super indecisive and uncertain
Thats a scary thought@@RetreadPhoto
Formation grouping, in weather with low vfr, man that makes me nervous.. be careful
What the fuck bro are you trying to end up in an NTSB accident report?
yes he is
Air Safety Institute has entered the chat.
Not a fighter
Your oxygen mask is not fitted properly. You need a tighter seal.
Hmmm... trainer or fighter? When I flew in the Navy, back in the early 70s, we could always tell a trainer from a fighter - a trainer will just barely kill you where a fighter/fleet aircraft will really kill you.
Making you work for a hole in the sky 😂 can you ask for a air fuel delivery ✈️
I have watched you turn and land at the municipal airport in SLC. Looks like you came from Wendover. The company I work for did a bunch of donation work for the Enola Gay out in Wendover. Awesome to see and hear the L39 while playing fetch with the pooch in my front yard!
Anyone else unable to watch one of his videos ever since he stranded his good friend to shack up with that random girl, right after he broke up with his long term girlfriend?
what video is that because I'm sure it was another of his train wrecks
silly boys, in the real world you would power through the non convective CB’s. How many GA pilots have been killed relying on delayed satellite WX radar? Theres a reason these aircraft have high G tolerance and no WX radar onboard.
Whats the point of the front seat wearing a helmet and using an oxygen mask while the back seater does not? Are the two cockpits divided and the back seat fully pressurized but the front isn't? Who are you trying to fool man?
Highway to the danger zone goose!
Diverting is not hard with proper preflight planning no matter what aircraft you’re flying.
Matt and his Click Bait titles. An L-39 is not a fighter jet. I like you and your content but please....stop the click baity thing
The L-39 could be outfitted with weapons making it a fighter jet
I genuinely hesitate to click videos after this became his norm awhile ago. I remember several times the title was a tease for how the video ended without any resolve to things. I got so annoyed from those I largely stopped watching entirely.
The T-37 was outfitted with weapons, more fuel and more thrust, turning it into the A-37. Guess what? It still wasn't a fighter jet.@@BraydenMorsey
@@BraydenMorsey my Honda could be outfitted with armor and a cannon, but that doesn't make it a tank.
Does it make it a IFV though? @@johnbecker1996
Where is the "fighter jet" part?
not on this channel :D
I saw you coming into Hell Ala earlier. Heard you taking off. Have a safe flight Matt.
What no cup holder?????
Flying an L-39 is not big problem in weather ! If you can avoid it , good , if not , you won t crash !
I've been saying this for ages and I'll keep repeating it: PLEASE SUBTITLE YOUR VIDEOS. Words are very hard to decipher when you're talking through the radio all the time.
Are these jets not equipped for IFR? Don’t understand scud running with thunderstorms in the area. What’s the service ceiling on these?
at about 10:00 or so you can hear them calling for IFR Clearance, and iirc the service ceiling is about 35,000ft
@@oppu limited to FL280 due to not being RVSM (Reduced Vertical separation Minimums) certified.
Because he’s got poor discipline, bad flight planning, and lots of poor habits.
Based on this video, i think the backseat needs to be replaced with another gas tank.
Would save her life. Poor gal.
Another buttMiller special. Hey, if I put rockets on a Cessna 152 can I call a fighter as well?
buttMiller hahahhahahahaah I love it
GAPER GAP LOLLLL
Where's the fighter jet? All I see is some L-39s.
Google says some L-39's were flown in a light-attack configuration but for the most part, it's a Jet trainer.
In millennium terms if you wear a helmet with oxygen and it has a canopy, it’s a fighter jet. LOL
Did you see an increase in KIAS when you pushed the throttle full forward?
G,day🤔🇦🇺
That’s normally what happens, gday!
@@lukebelvin4900youre missing the point
Lovely video most envious. Maybe one day
Nice video of a jet’s spartan interior.
Hey Matt , thanks for sharing!!
Hi Matt, just wondering if that air blowing in your face is from a vent (or the pressurisation system) or is it a leak in the canopy? Also, what kneeboard are you using to hold your phone? I tried window mounts and I don't like them. I find myself just resting my phone on my leg and looking at it once in a while for auxiliary information (I use the G1000 as primary). I don't see the kneeboard on your Amazon list.
I recognize your back seater's voice but I can't for the life of me remember who she is.
What is the plane?
Sounds like Dakota from Flying Doodles in the back seat! 🙂
Diverting in a blizzard with the low fuel light flashing can be intense.
yo this guys is the owner of that l 39?
Well, I might believe you if you were actually in a Fighter Jet rather than a trainer jet.
I'm pretty sure they were used for some fighter roles
@@alexenns3203 Designed specifically as an advanced trainer jet...per Wikipedia. It has been adapted for some combat roles. Fighter jets are all-wx capable. Fighter pilots do detailed flight planning...on the ground. 😅
@@alexenns3203 yeah, I'm pretty sure they're used as fighters by Vatican City and Tuvalu.
Flying Information
Asking for NOTAMS when you have a GTN 650? Damn I’m jealous but if you get the subscription you can grab notams yourself in flight. Gotta love tech.
The only one that I can hear clearly is the female instructor in the back.
Instructor? What make ou think she’s an instructor?
@@RetreadPhoto It just seems like a training flight. Hot mess and she’s the only one that seems calm.
Another nice video! I also always enjoy the negative comments from the haters…very entertaining
Nice videos, always good to see videos of L39s flying... but the impression we are all getting (anybody with any kind of license) is that he haves some bad safety habits and lacks planning for his flights. I'm not saying it is like that, only it looks like it.
And on a fuel hungry jet this can have very serious consequences.
Like selecting diverts on the fly. You never do that because you're putting yourself in a box. Should be selected, checked (NOTAMS, FBOs, etc...) and briefed before takeoff.
Specially since this is a two-ship flight. Doesn't looks like they briefed flight lead and wingman contracts, change of leader procedure, etc... all looks to be improvised in flight and that's not good. Thousands of things can go wrong when you plan, imagine when you're improvising.
Again, I'm not saying he doesn't plan or brief. I'm saying it doesn't show or looks like it on the videos.
Nice editing. Very Hollywood, edge of your seat, keep 'em guessing feel. That looks like so much fun. 👍
Nice going Matt!!! I really enjoyed this one!!
You haven’t even watched it yet
did too.@@BlauveltBurns
No pilot is going to say "Nice going" to that video. Matt continues to post videos proving him to be a dangerous pilot going for clicks
Relax...I never said i was a Pilot. he's entertaining and i like his stuff. I dont see what the issue is.@@ericfletcher8454
What’s with all the backseat pilots in the comments. These are edited videos, you don’t know what happened off camera. What weather briefings he did or did not do. What was briefed. What was acted for dramatic effect. Flying carries an inherent risk, and as long as regulations aren’t broken & there’s no excessive danger to bystanders, it’s an individual choice. Calling him out for having a water bottle on the windscreen is absurd & shows no risk tolerance.
Why is there so much negativity in these comments lately?! I understood perfectly well, based on the thumbnail, what he meant by 'fighter jet'. Obviously it's not a fighter jet, but it's in the same, perhaps quite distant, general category, and if I owned one I'd also call it 'my fighter jet', with a wink.
Also, he has significant piloting experience (probably way more than most of the people commenting), and knows what he is doing. So maybe you disagree with how he's doing something, but why not say it respectfully instead of in such a negative way?
If you don't enjoy his videos, don't watch them. If you are gonna watch it, maybe just keep the negative comments to yourself. As a many a wise mom has said "If you got nothing nice to say, don't say anything"!
Matt, the flying experiences you share are unique and awesome! Keep them coming!
No he doesnt have more flight experience than the commentators. There are plenty of Pilots shredding him that have 10,000+ hours flying real fighters
Incredible images, your flights are fantastic, I have been following you for a long time and congratulations for making your passion in the sky a reality. Greetings from Argentina 🧿🧿🦾🦾🙋♂🙋♂
