I've suffered from schizophrenia for the past 32 years. It has wrecked havoc with just about every facit of my life. I cant tell you enough how this illness feels. It is deceitful and very tricky to figure out. I studied psychology in college so I may have some more incite then others. It needs to be understood and not judged. Society is finally starting ti recognized that we are not responsible for inheriting this genetic illness. It is not our fault! Schizophrenics are incredibly smart, geniuses. When well treated, they can excel

Maybe coming at this from the completely wrong 'angle' - it was only briefly touched on, but early childhood traumatic events have a huge lifelong impact on how life maps out. Unfortunately 'big pharma' funds/pushes all of this about 'disorders' - perhaps instead of what's wrong with a person, we should be asking 'what happened to you'?

@@askthebraindoctorI am 65 years old and have ‘been through the system’ many, many times - too many!
My story is horrendous child abuse: psychological neglect/abuse, physical violent abuse, rape, verbal abuse, gaslighting, the list goes on!
This, is all from what were supposed to be ‘parents’!
This vastly impacted my whole life; I couldn’t, and still cant cope with everyday‘normal’ life, I find it way too overpowering and dangerous.
It’s like if I were to write a book about my life (which I would like to) it would seem too far fetched and macabre - what I’ve been through is way beyond what the human brain/psycho-system is ‘meant’ to experience!
My experience of the ‘mental health’ system here in the UK is a completely broken and corrupt atrocity!
I cant speak for the US, but heard similar stories.
      The people, like the 21 year old case study in your video wouldn’t be referred to a neurologist, he’d be referred to a psychiatrist, and this is where the corruption comes in, this is where ‘big pharma’ comes in;
check out this video if you’re interested.
      th-cam.com/video/-Nd40Uy6tbQ/w-d-xo.html
No psychiatrist is in the least bit interested in the ‘person’ presenting to them - as was pointed out in your video, ‘these symptoms have to have been present in the last week’! That’s all they’re interested in.
They don’t speak to you as a person, they’re speaking ‘over’, ‘beyond’ the actual person sitting in his/her office - they are seeking out ‘disorders’!
No matter how much is known about the human brain; what part does this function - what part does that function - there is absolutely no mention of the ‘owner’ of said brain!
In fact, I’m not sure just how much is really known about the brain - ‘they’ don’t even know ‘what’ it is, is it an organ or is it a gland??
I’ve had a lifetime of psychiatrists trying to prescribe this SSRI, that SSRI - even a ‘cocktail’ of the bloody things! I tried once or twice for few days, and I can say those things really can screw you up! (as mentioned in the video)
I’ve been ‘diagnosed’ with a litany of ‘disorders’!
Anytime I’ve tried to describe my life, was like trying to describe ‘rocket science’!
In fact the last psychiatrist I ‘saw’ actually admitted he knew nothing about child abuse!??
Mental health system is going about this completely wrong!
The question should always be asked ‘what happened to you’?
I know there are thousands of people out there on cocktails of these drugs for years and years with toxic side effects, obesity, type 2 diabetes, hypertension, stroke, early onset dementia, and probably a lot more.
As you said, the life expectancy of someone diagnosed with schizophrenia is reduced by 20 years! Could this be down to the toxic drugs??
Could a psychosis be down to some early childhood trauma that got dissociated for years and a ‘trigger’ set off a ‘tilt’?? brain can’t deal with this?
Somehow I never became psychotic, never got sectioned, just stayed alive, not living a ‘normal life’ but just about surviving, even with the constant flashbacks and intrusive memories.
In the last few years I have been seeing a trauma counsellor.
I suffer from ‘developmental trauma’! Not a disorder - a result!!

All of the things you addressed are side effects and symptoms rather than the cause of schizophrenia. The eye movements are also a symptom that's a result of the state of the "fight or flight" mindset. The root cause is the belief in many things that aren't true that conflict with the conscience. This results in the exaggerated dilation of the eyes, yet another extreme symptom.

My son who overdosed 8 months ago got schizophrenia from canabis. I cannot believe they’ve legalized it with how bad my son was. He then tried every drug available and we think he may have died of fentanyl. My adopted brother lost hid Dad, his rock, at 9. I believe that the loss of a parent is a major reason for this happening, and he felt alone. I believe that I too just kinda died inside because our mother was just scared. I understand, but I saw her fall apart.. I stopped having a relationship with her. At 7. Because she just checked out, and I became the scapegoat. All this confusion does get created when you sense that nobody cares about you. A child has to be able to have a safe base, a tribe to cover them on every single level. Fear destroys life. And all you gotta do is communicate how you feel as a child. But some people just arent equipped to handle those icky feelings. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Listen to your children and give a damm. If you can.

Behaviors began years prior to formal diagnosis. I have been wracked with guilt ever since. I’m curious what research is available regarding in-utero exposure to ssi’s and SSRI’s. I was raised by a Schizophrenic mother, untreated with meds, it was a living hell as I remember the terrible screams and fighting from the time I was a toddler. My Mother finished her tortured life at the age of 84, in locked Alzheimer's ward. There was so much, anger, sadness and depression growing up in a home with all of this going on, with no sign of my mother's disease being corrected, cured or managed in anyway. It took me years to come to grips with my anger, and depression. My grandfather was 15 years older than my grandmother, and my grandfather died when my mother was 17years old, just a small clue, one factor as to why my mother and her brother developed schizophrenia. I wish the scientists, doctors could come up with a cure, but because of the brain complexity of not developing normally, may mean that they will never find a cure, other than identifying risk factors and avoid giving birth.

What about someone who's just became aware of there own subvocalizations and it caused a feedback loop of traumatizing auditory memories that just play over and over. That's how it started for me my left ear was bothering me and I was focusing on my left ear then I heared my own subconscious internal dialog for the first time and then I had a mental break down it was like angels fighting with demons and arguing back and forth. Then I started focusing on other people and realized that if you listen carefully and started noticing in a group setting that everyone talks under there breath while there thinking of language then I became aware that that gut feeling is a subconscious cue based off of barely audable subvocalizations that subconsciously render in our minds and because of that I got paranoid and would worry that people would get the wrong impression of me. I learned what a bridge looks like when it collapses. Dramatic video image. Dramatizes the purported terrible effect of using cannabis once. Has nothing whatsoever to do with human health. Remember the "this is your brain on drugs" public service advertisement? Whether or not cannabis use can actually trigger schizophrenia. the fact that the idiot in the video resorts to showing us video of a collapsing bridge, tells us that he is not trying to educate us; he is trying to propagandize us. Scam artist.

Brilliant summary of this terrible illness, which has several types of presentations. As a mother of a son who was diagnosed, a couple years after his first presentation, i lived thru the horror of how this can present. I became a mental health nurse to better understand. He was absolutely tormented and i found the psych services slow to intervene. Anti psychotics may not be perfect, but he can now live in his skin without the torment. Im reluctant to interfere with that, even though i fully support alternative treatments. I wouldn't want him to be put thru any more trauma while giving these a try.

I don't drive a car because of my psychosis and my inability to use my vision and recollection correctly. My mother wants me to be bi polar, it seems it is a better illness in her opinion but I am textbook schizophrenic though I have mood swings occasionally, I am schizo affected bi polar type and I am participating in treatment. A thing I experience that is disheartening is a lack of self to the point of losing awareness. How can I enjoy something if there is no "I" to enjoy it?

    • @TheDude-w5l

Exactly. All these theories miss the point of the need for a brain - simulating reality. Schizophrenia is not something that is constantly generated as a state of mind because of some faulty chemistry, as every other mental illness, schizophrenia symptoms are modes of pattern recognition, thought and physiological responses carved in a moment of extreme pressure. I akin the process of mental problems development to the development of rare minerals - extreme pressures in specific conditions lead to diamonds for example. Even after the conditions to form the diamond are gone, the diamond still exists.
That is the big erroneous thinking behind schizophrenia, that the schizophrenic brain is somewhat different, though we still couldn't prove how. I argue this is because it isn't different in the present day, but it WAS taken to it's mental extremes some point in the past, and when the reality deciding neural algorithms collapsed their function for the day, it generated problematic variables for the future mind's eye generating mechanisms of the self.

I don't believe in free will and I feel my body moving on its own separately from me. Other people don't believe in free will and don't experience this. A lot of the people I've come across have had a lot of the same experiences but believe we have free will in the moment. I met my polar opposite the other day who is in a reality where everything is random and we are completely free. It's like there is an overarching theme that stays long term, many monthly or weekly themes that pop up over time, and they bounce from person to person back and forth, spread out over a lifetime, ect. I feel my thumb moving on its own right now.

I myself feel so exhausted I feel I have nothing to pour into her my cup is empty. Yesterday we went to a mental health institution because she was hallucinating, crying and shouting... Now it starts to snow, but the air isn’t cold. You hold out your hand to catch a few specks of white as they fall. These aren’t snowflakes, this is powdered sugar! With a big grin you stick your tongue out into the air. Now I am really looking in the mirror. Before when I looked at my face in the mirror that wasn't my real face. My real face is this entire singularity of every fucking thing. This is what I am. This is God looking at God. Yeah this is what I am and I Love it.Notice that what I am is pixels on a screen. Pixels on a screen talking to you. You can notice that these pixels on a screen are actually just a fragment, a figment of your own poop. A fragment of your own poop manifesting as pixels on a screen. You are the poop speaking to itself. The poop now as it is talking is also hearing these words and becoming conscious of itself as the poop. You are the poop talking to yourself becoming conscious of yourself as the poop. The poop is reminding itself that it is the poop because the poop forgot. The poop is telling you that you are God dreaming up this life and this very moment, this room that you're sitting in that you think of as a physical room is actually a dream. Your entire life is a dream. Your childhood is a dream and the ideas you have of your death is a dream. Everything you're experiencing right now what you are is God. God talking to itself. I am you and you are me. Then I heard a new sound: a living sound, like the richest, most complex, most beautiful piece of music you've ever heard. Growing in volume as a pure white light descended, it obliterated the monotonous mechanical pounding that, seemingly for eons, had been my only company up until then. The light got closer and closer, spinning around and around and generating those filaments of pure white light that I now saw were tinged, here and there, with hints of gold. Then at the very center of the light, something else appeared. There was a wooshing sound, and in a flash I went through the opening and found myself in a completely new world. The strangest, most beautiful world I'd ever seen. Brilliant, vibrant, ecstatic, stunning . . . I was flying, passing over trees and fields, streams and waterfalls, and here and there, people. There were children, too, laughing and playing. The people sang and danced around in circles, and sometimes I'd see a dog, running and jumping among them, as full of joy as the people were. A beautiful, Incredible dream world . . .
    Except it wasn't a dream.
The word real expresses something abstract, and it's frustratingly ineffective at conveying what I'm trying to describe. Imagine being a kid and going to a movie on a summer day. Maybe the movie was good, and you were entertained as you sat through it. But then the show ended, and you filed out of the theater and back into the deep, vibrant, welcoming warmth of the summer afternoon. And as the air and the sunlight hit you, you wondered why on earth you'd wasted this gorgeous day sitting in a dark theater. Multiply that feeling a thousand times, and you still won't be anywhere close to what I felt like where I was.I could hear a plane taking off kind of sound. Like a *mmmmmmm* *aaaaaaaaa*
You hear this really intense just like *wuuuu* Like this really like almost like a siren. man I got the whole *wuuu* the *gnn~oo* Also very loud, it was like *hooow* As if the sound slow down. And I heard this *zuuu* And I heard huh like a *zuuu* and it was getting louder and louder until it kind of just *pshhh* and then *prshhh* This is just like *boom boom* just like you're leaping into this fucking realm. it was like "what? what the fuck" I do remember looking at them thinking"what the fuck..."
"what the fuck?" And like when I tried to work them out that was it, it just went and then something else would be there like doing that *tututututu*
it's fucking crazy! insane, insane, it's insane. I didn't even think it was possible. This is impossible. Insane, fucking insane. And when I started like becoming more conscious I started telling everyone you guys... you guys you GUYS wow wow That seems like this all-the only thing that keeps going to your head is just wow WOW! like "this is so fucking amazing!" like "how is this even possible?!". That's wow. That was wow! WOW factor and I'm gonna be going WOW! probably every day, every single day when I think about that I'm just gonna go "wow" when you come back to real world you're like "holy fuck". What the fuck was that! What the fuck! And the feeling of "I have been here before" "I have done this before, everything is gonna be okay cause I have experienced this before". The whole thing it just feels like a massive fucking déjà vu.A person might come to the realization very suddenly and spontaneously that they're made of jello. This thought just comes to them because the unconscious has this kind of fantasy-like nature where it just kind of tests things and comes up with crazy thoughts.
There are many reports of schizophrenics coming to such beliefs that their bodies are made of glass or wood because the unconscious presents them with this idea.
The people you speak with in your dreams are very similar to the entities who speak to the schizophrenic.
Insanity is a dream which has become real.
Very often the hallucinations seemed to come from Gods, Goddesses, Angels and Demons.
Early humans were essentially all schizophrenic but as we've developed and become more sophisticated and have moved away from our natural foundations. Our egos have become stronger and we've been disconnected from the forces of the unconscious. So when they erupt forth we find it very strange, alienating and oftentimes very terrifying. However many schizophrenic patients don't experience this eruption of the unconscious all the time. Instead it seems to be triggered by episodes of psychic distress.

For me it's like a memory of listening to somebody making a comment from the past and I literally reenactment that auditory memory subconsciously by making a subvocalization but it's like there is a sound board in my head of auditory memories based off of auditory associations instead of visual and when this happens my eyes dart to the left but when I focus and visualize things my eyes dart to the right but when two things that are conflicting my eyes roll but when they coincide I look down.

No it's not. Those are echoes of a mind's eye developed in extreme circumstances. We all have an inner world that manifests itself even in lack of stimuli, and that world is formed by echoes of previous experiences. They self calibrate though and are constantly shifting in relation to current stimuli. Schizophrenics suffer from exactly this, elements of the mind's eye and inner-world experience that developed under the unbalanced influence of a stimuli taken to it's extreme. Keep in a mind we're talking of the brain here, a stimuli is not just plain old sight and sound or touch, but the archetypal represantation buit on a collection of patterns of physical input.
That is my lay-man opinion, a guy that drives a forklift. I don't need much else to be extremely sickened of a profession that so absurdly insists on looking at faulty chemical processes or neuronal disfunction, and fail to take into account the fact that the mind is generated by everything at once- you now, just like artificial neural networks process the entire internet to make sense of something and just as the brain, they do spew up 'caca' if they get fed 'caca'.
In conclusion, focusing on faulty neurons is just like my grandma when she remarked to my grandpa : the water in the well is so high, what if it overspills with alll this rain? My grandpa replied: that doesn't happen, the entire water level of the soil has to rise for the well water to rise. If it rose to much the well water would have nowhere to get spilled, since there will already be water everywhere around here.

I hear your understanding and remember seeing what looked like microvascular ischemia even in MRIs with schizophrenia BUT I don’t hear based on the understanding of even a lack of blood flow how to heal the brain or atleast assist its healing?
Not one recommendation to assist recovery with these realizations??
How about using a little methylene blue?
    Ginko biloba with green tea.
    Reducing inflammation???
Can you recommend anything at all??

My wife has been suffering from symptoms.... possibly longer than I've even known her.
Started with her thinking different women were trying to steal me from her, then there was this whole deal where she thought her family way over on the other side of the country were somehow trying to.... get people over here to spy on her or mess with her, then she started thinking the government was using energy weapons on her to mess with her mind, she had this whole conspiracy thinking "they" took her uterus out when we had our 2nd and third child... and then thinking they switched our kids with someone else's, then accusing me of cheating a whole bunch throughout in which she started becoming violent.

    • @ShaggyTheClown17
      @ShaggyTheClown17 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

And every time she would have these mental breaks her eyes would seem to bulge out and she'd look incredibly crazed and terrified, after apparently it ended I'd ask why she thought those things or why she acted like that and she'd always be like "I don't know" or "I thought you were doing something."
She's since been diagnosed and committed.... Me and the kids really miss her, she's been gone for going on 8 months :(

She'd also think that "people around town" or "the entire town" were trying to poison us or just her... and I'd tell her to pick some other product or one after it and I'd be like "You know if people WERE actually trying to poison you then that kind of means a lot of other people are being poisoned any time we don't end up picking whatever the thing is you think that they poisoned.... but yea that didn't help much because obviously logic doesn't help the illogical.

I think a cure is a stupid notion. Brains are here to generate reality, so as to manage your survival. Once certain pathways have been created, you can't straightened them back up, because there is NOTHING to be straightened. They are nothing but a bunch of neural networks that collapse to the most stable entropic state that leads to the desired output for survival ( so all the other pathways necessary for all the other things that you do are in relation to those also) all you can do with drugs is pressure them into some lower, simpler entropic state, more aligned to whatever the desired effect is.now, how do you even define what that is, since the toposophic landscape they have to prove themselves useful in the future will not be the same day to day?
You can't develop a cure- you decrease complexity up to a 'functioning' point and develop crotches. These are the single tools available to you. Psychedelics may work differently, by resseting the brain and giving you the option or reforming pathways from previous, higher entropic planes, but you loose crucial history in doing so, in my opinion. I think that is the reason that people on psychedelics spew out stuff like we're all one and whatnot. They get resset to origins, but lack the sophistication that years of being hurt define you as a separate individual.

To pathologize someone is an ideological act. You have three estates - The ruling class, the functionaries of the ruling class, and the general population. The second estate includes psychologists, because they exist to organize and perpetuate the general population in the interests of the present ruling class. We are now in a post-Feminist, post-racial equality paradigm, because of the wealth of women and non-White (non Germanic, or Celtic) people in the ruling class. So the teachers, psychologists, police etc of the second estate have adapted. And every ideological shift will disadvantage certain members of society. Now White, poor, menial working class, or lower middle class men (straight or gay) are disadvantaged - and increasingly pathologized.

Well if you keep someone awake for more than 5 days they start to hallucinate, ask a soldier who tried hell week. They bring them on the edge of insanity on purpose to see how well they handle extreme stress and physical load whilst sleep deprived. Afterwards they get hosed of cleaned up put in a hotel and sleep it off, in order to restore them to normal extra sleep is mandatory in order to make them normal again. If normal people go to extremes they hit that limit even faster, they get an overactive brain someone with a psychosis in an fMRI scanner shows exteme activity. Now antipsychotic drugs can lower total brain activity by blocking the needed neurotransmitters or some of them in order to calm you down. They should be given in case someone goes through the roof at the lowest still effective dose, afterwards it should be lowered, more medication is not always better dosage is a very important point one does not want to craete zombies and one does not want someone to go through the roof it is a constant balancing until the right maintenance dosage is reached and the psychosis is in remission.
These are theories that might explain the why of psychosis but the thruth is we don't know exactly why, these are possible causes, but there is more to it the total amount of brain activity plays a role in psychosis, so if one is in this situation and has not been prior medicated, because the symptoms described are also side effects of medication.
    www.nature.com/articles/1300710
Antipsychotics cause damage as above article states in nature medicine almost exactly what this doctor describes.
The increased ventricular space is also a result of damage done as this article in nature magazine describes.
Another note medication should be a help not a hinderance in once performance as a human.

Since antipsychotics lower dopamine and serotine whom both play a role in production of melatonone one might want to up this normal brain substance during and .after treatment a while. Usually with a first psychosis medication is goven for a year. Do not let them bullshit you into taking it for life do taper of slowly gradually either to the lowest still effective dosage or to taking nothing whatever works best

Don’t know how fun or cool it is regarding eye movement. 🙄But honestly the cure is not in the brain. Schizophrenia is an overall breakdown of health in the immune body causing hormonal imbalance. To prove my point…Look at why the Ketogenic diet is showing promise in resolving diabetes.
This diet works directly on the hormonal balance and is shown to be able to regulate mood and metabolism and decrease the tendency towards diabetes. Diabetes is an autoimmune disorder. Keto restores health to the body by reducing insulin through the reduction of carbs, sugars and fasting. This decreases mood fluctuations and restores the gut microbiome. A healthy microbiome is critical to health of the body and brain. Healthy body, healthy mind. What this doctor is outlining is simply the parts of the body that are affected, as well as triggers; informative but no new insights. Some people get MS, some Crohn’s disease, some Hashimoto’s or Lupus, or in the case of schizophrenia the brain goes haywire. But the same diet will cure them all. It’s in the body not the brain. And a healthy body enables someone to cope with trauma more efficiently.

If you get schizophrenia there's not a lot you can do about it. In fact there's no controlling it. It's a horrible condition that torments the person suffering from it 24/7. However, there is a way out and it's by ignoring and not believing in the hallucinations and delusions. The person has to completely rewire their brain by way of changing all of their habits of thought. This could take years but it works if you totally remove and separate yourself from the delusions and hallucinations. It's as if they lose interest when you ignore them and focus on reality since they no longer have control over you.

The truth is. I realy beleive the "halucinations" are real. But i cant figure out why..medical sciences? Spiritual warfare? Emotional and psychological imbalance? Inability to focus and be in our full mental compacity? Its a rough disorder in all stages. I am effective and so.e times, most now dormant but i been full paranoid schitso phrenic before. Meds are essential. Even though most are somehow effective (?) I beleive chemical balance is aim 1..anxiety or adhd..but i beleive in the telepathy. The tv was very uncomfortable before. Now im ok there. I had to take dim light showers a long time ago. Its all in our power of our minds but under attack it is aweful and impossible been there! More studys the right distribution of nuerological effecting medicines!

Wow, what a tough situation for them. Twin cases are very interesting in the pathophysiologic mechanisms that we believe underlie this condition.
Glad you are their friend and can provide some understanding and hope for them.
Thank you for watching and for the comment.

Well why has marijuana helped people with disorders?

    • @askthebraindoctor

This is a GREAT question which warrants real discussion. Hopefully our integrative podcast we’re working on, and discussion format will allow insightful education about this.
For now, let’s try to understand what you mean by helped. What “type of people” and who are you referring to, and which disorders are you referencing. Also, are these short or long term changes you’re referencing and how is the alleged help measured, defined, and where is this information coming from? How much is personal anecdote?
Great thing to discuss further, would love to help!

No, of course note. There are many treatments and excellent care for those learning to handle this disease in themselves or their loved ones. You stay positive and we'll keep working on the science and treatments!
