Great video! I was disappointed with what I made yesterday, as the new K1 didn't move. I even tried making another and changing the amount of K1. Was relieved to see that is normal. Thank you.
I'm actually filtering my 50 gallon pond with one of these. I hybridized it with a sponge filter on the bottom as a prefilter and additional biological and mechanical filtration.
I'd be interested in seeing how you put it together. I have a larger pond and was considering creating something like this with a milk jug or similar sized container
This. This is the one I’ve been looking for! Would a 2 liter with the one liter of K1 be a sufficient size for a heavily stocked/50ish% planted tank? I have a tidal110, fx4 & sponge filter running now for good measure. lol but i was considering using a 2.5 or 5 gal bucket honestly for my moving bed 😅
The only thing I would add, roll a newspaper into a funnel. Stick into the top of the bottle. Less clean up. This what I'm doing with the MAB K-1. I've done this with PERLER beads too. Haven't had to clean that in 9 months. Great vid.
these really only work in a sump and you need 1 liter per 10 US gallons best only for pond filters like nexus best to fill the bottle with pumice stone like matrix it has more surface area
Great video, built mine right after i uploaded my unboxing video. mine was much smaller. think i will build a 2 liter filter this weekend for my 36g. would this work in a new tank to help getmit cycling? i have a 75g project im working on. still working out what filtration i need to get for it. but now that i have the k1 i was wondering how it work in a new twnk forthe cycling process.
nice video. but - from my (older) literature about aquariums i learned that filter-bacteria dont like two things: 1) light and 2) air - so how does that fit in to the shown filter, where they get blown up with constant air bubbles all day and night?
So how long have you been running these and have they remained self-cleaning or do they eventually need some maintenance? I notice you do not have any kind of sponge prefilter, Do you still build them this way? (and thank you sooooo much for the tip at the end, I could not figure out what I'd done "wrong" on a build until your video!)
I've got one of these set up, but I'm not sure it is working. I keep watching little bits of detritus drift past the water intake hole. Doesn't seem to be any water going in, just bubbles coming out. 3.5lpm air pump running to a 650ml bottle 2/3 full of k1. Five holes in the top. One near the bottom. Didn't drill holes in the bottom, but the cap is off (was going to put a sponge there). I just don't understand how we can biofilter the water when there seems to be no water flowing through the media. Seems like lpm of bubbles going out = lpm of air coming in with no need for water to do anything but get out of the way. How is it supposed to work?
I find Lava Rock better and so much cheaper then K1, K1 price has gone up like 500% in the last few years so yea, ill stick to lava rock, and if you cant find it search for BBQ lava rock also :)

Really nice to see a new filter and an old - sometimes people freak out when theirs doesn't look like the old ones
Do these need cleaning out though, and if so how.
Heeeey ;) great idea for my K1! Will be sure to add this to my tanks. Great Vid!
Awesome video. Good info and well spoken.... thanks for sharing.....

50gal's a pond?

Big point what i want to tell is about noise that the bubbles poping on the surface.
great vid always wonder about the k1 and thanks to my aquarium box I get to it out can't wait happy tanking every one
What is this and from where we can get this
awesome video man continue doing what you're doing
Super informative Video, Thanks!!
My k1 media doesn't change color it's still white after 1.5 months use it's mean it doesn't working pls suggest me
Oh I'm really going to have to try this it looks super cool 🤗🤗🤗 nice one as always Greg
Does it mean you don't need a skimmer if you have a moving bed filter in a reef tank ?

+Fish Behind Glass haha, yeah, i made a mess, thank goodness for timelapse

Looks cool are you ment to change it though?
how do you keep fry from getting in there?
Great idea
thank you
Hi will this help with algae in the tank?
So if I make one I don’t need a sponge filter or hang back filter???
You probably will still need another type of filtration depending on what size tank, amount of fish etc, it's all about the bioload basically
I got a problem with my K1..and it doesn't move like in the video.. what is the main criteria that I must look for to make it moving?
It needs to get dirty and fill with bacteria to make it neutrally buoyant
@@gregjonesonline thanks for answer..how long it will take to naturally buoyant?
@@thejudge9983 1-3 months
@@gregjonesonline thank you..😂

k1 takes quite a while to cycle, so it's best to put it in an established tank and then transfer it to a new tank after it is broken in
+Greg Jones (Greg's Fishroom) ok great, thanks
What's the plant in the background? Reminds me of clovers.
hey Greg can you make a M.B.F using a small pump or does it have to be air bubbles??? ✌
What kind of plant is that you have floating in the upper right hand corner? Thanks!
elbee castro fake plastic boxwood, you can get them at craft stores

Your literature is incorrect. The bacteria are aerobic. Light is harmless unless it has UV.
Do I need other filter media such as bio ball, bio ring, etc ? thanks
Ameng Jkt this is a good supplemental bio filter, still need mechanical filtration
I wanna make one I need to get some of this media
Thanks for the video. K1 is not available where I live. Is there any other media do you suggest I can use ?.
+AquaThusiast check ebay
Stop fry from getting in?
Can you use anything other than k1?
+Rogue Shadow there are lots of plastic moving bed medias, any of them will work
ok thanks
I used the hel X media ordered wrong one ive set it up in a 2 litre bottle anyway what disadvantage do you think I have against k1 micro
not much of a difference
+Greg Jones (Greg's Fishroom) cheers thanks for reply
is that kind of media has same function with bio ring ?
yes, it's a bio media
Should i choose the Bio ring or this k1..which better ?
Fired Up Video!!!
Great video. What size of pump required for it to get going well in a 70 gal tank ?
depends on how deep you put it, but a standard size air pump should be fine
Does it have to be an air pump or can I use a submersible water pump?
Angela Ruggles air is easier, water could work too as long as it keeps everything moving
I grew up in Worcester Mass, I remember Polar.

c fer I have two 55 gallon barrels full
and no maintenance?
none
I want to make something similar for my fry tank. How could I prevent the fry from committing suicide? Sponge inside the holes? Would that work?
sponge prefilter
better to use an air stone at the bottom.
How much K1 Micro (in gm) needed for a 1.5lt and 2lt bottle?
Ayan Debnath I like to fill them half way, so 1ltr for a 2 ltr bottle
Is that a Chinese product, the k1 media?
How many gallons do you think one 2 liter bottle can filter? 30 gallons per 2 liter bottle?
you still need mechanical filtration, this could probably handle the bio filtration on a 20 gal as long as it isn't heavily stocked
Nice Video! :) 2 THUMBS UP! I created my own! Thank You!
Cool
Three weeks and K1 micro still floating :(
i thought the most efficient filter media was sand?
+ilikewasabe sand may have more surface area, but isn't self cleaning
+SciGuy good point

How is it supposed to work?
William Watkins poke more holes in the bottom
Greg Jones I'll do that. Thanks for the reply.
In malaysia not have this bottle who wanna sale this for me.
What is the advantage of having it all tumble around like that?
+enticed2zeitgeist it needs to gently tumble in order to self-clean, otherwise it will get plugged up and won't work
+Greg Jones (Greg's Fishroom) Self clean? Where does all the detritus go then? Does the bacteria just break it down?
