I've been using an ifi purifier 3 between my streamer and Chord M-scaler for about 18 months now and can discern an overall improvement - a slightly more fleshed out and organic sound; not 'night and day' but well worth the modest investment imo.

I got 2 ifi spdif purifier. I agree with your description. I initially got mine out of necessity. The coax signal, coming out of the Node 2i would not lock with some DAC’s (Burson and Musical Fidelity). After putting in the iFi SPDIF, the DAC would lock immediately to the reclocked signal, and I then noticed the sound improvement as you mentioned. Highly recommend a little device!

I enjoyed your review. I also run the iFi SPDIF purifier in to my Chord QUTEST DAC and I agree it is a worthwhile audio tweak. I swapped out the iFi switch mode power supply that comes with it for a LHY AUDIO BATT-1 battery power supply that completely eliminates any noise from the power supply and this made a pretty good improvement to performance of the purifier. Added benefit of the iFi product was that I am able to run my TOSLINK output from my DSP device in to the BNC/SPDIF input of my CHORD DAC with inherent improvement using that input. Incremental improvements but they all add up in the end.

so for the desktop system i highly recommend the itube and also the schiit audio loki eq.

You made the video I’ve been hoping someone would do on these little iFi devices!
    Your experiences largely mirror mine!
One little contribution I might offer is the better the power supply you have on the iFi spdif iPurifier 2, the more audiophile it becomes. I heard someone in a review suggest this, so picked up the next level up iFi iPower X 5v, and more refinement :) ✨✨
Cool to see this gem up the game of your high end gear!
I’m also running an iFi iPurifier 3+ usb off my iMac and it did the same for that source more relaxed refined.
I’ve used the iSilencer 2or3? In this chain right off the iMac as well, it did change the character of my dacs sound, but like you, adding the iPurifier usb refocused and enhanced the digital signal making the iMac much more of an audiophile sounding source+++
If you haven’t already, you might try the appropriate for your main speaker weight Isoacoustics Gaia feet. Not cheap, but surprisingly positive potentially.
Cool channel and appreciate your ear and sharing your audiophile journey with us!

Hard to tell not being in the room, but to my ears the 'after' sound is more compressed, forward, and brighter, if also more dynamic.
I tried the Ipurifier for USB a few years ago and had a similar experience with the sound becoming brighter and somehow thinner. It was not to my taste and I put it in the drawer.
I actually prefer your 'before' recording, even if it seems initially a bit less dynamic. Even though I'm older and my ears have a more difficult time capturing the upper frequencies, I am still sensitive to 'too bright' sounds.
But, we all have our preferences.

Thanks Paul, nice video again. Brings me to two questions. Would playing Apple Music from my iPad (with USBC!) into a DAC (I have the E50 Topping) give a better sound quality than through my iMac(also USBC connected). The reason why I ask is that on a Mac you cannot bypass the AUDIO/Midi stage; the iPad gives 'exclusive mode'. Curious about your thoughts. Secondly, would the iSilencer connected to my iPad give me any improvement on SQ ?

    • @vpconcepts9838

Hi Peter. Using the tidal app on my computer gives me exclusive mode, however I find my tidal app through my cell phone sounds better streaming through the electrocompaniet than my iMac does by just a bit. For the silencer+ I am using USB A, so you made need a A to C adapter for the iPad to use it, but yes, I would think it would make a difference. 👌🎼✨

I think reclocking the USB line can help: my Auralic Vega has different clock precision modes and on "exact" it would have consistent issues syncing with a Windows PC in normal operation, but adding a wyred4sound recovery, which has a femto clock and psu, radically reduced the drop outs and raised the sound quality.
I have the spdif iPurifier2 from a Cambridge Azur 350c going into the same Auralic Vega on exact, and it's the best digital combo I have by a parsec -- truly astounding considering how mid-fi the Cambridge is otherwise.

    • @shinyhunterlens

@@vpconcepts9838I need to revise what I said about USB reclocking: it undeniably helped the 2012 xmos USB receiver chip in my Auralic Vega (I can't find the exact model #, but it would've been their best in a $3.5k DAC back then), BUT I just removed the w4s recovery from my current setup with a topping D10s used as a toslink out and powered with an ifi idefender +/ifi ipower x combo, and harshness I heard with the USB reclocker there, which I originally attributed to the cheap topping, is now gone.
So yeah, if you have a DAC with an old USB chip, just get a decent DDC with good power.

    • @shinyhunterlens
      @shinyhunterlens ปีที่แล้ว +1

The topping D10s has an xmos xu208, the same as the douk audio solution in your laptop setup. I should have mentioned that before.
Full setup I'm listening to atm is: win 10 PC -15ft powered USB cable with an ifi ipower V2 -> ifi idefender + w/ifi ipower x -> Paul pang tz yun 3ft silver plated ofc USB cable -> topping D10s -7in toslink-> Auralic Vega -5ft dimazio xlr-> Schiit Jotunheim 2 -zmf stock ofc xlr-> zmf verite headphones w/verite pads
I also have an Eddie Current Balancing Act, but just don't feel like using tubes rn. The Schiit Jotunheim 2 is way more than resolving enough to show that the w4s recovery was doing *something* wrong.

    • @shinyhunterlens

Hi Paul, thanks for posting videos about your system and talking about it in depth.
I have a question... If you had to choose between connecting your Network Streamer/Player with a 5$ - 20$ or something dollar Ethernet cable OR with a capable Wifi connection (5Ghz for example) what would you choose in that situation with a high end playback system?
I understand that ethernet cables can carry noise with them from poor power supplies from the router sending the signal physically into the cable or because of the shielding of the cable.. wathever... I only understand it intuitively in a common sense manner myself anyway... not an expert.., hence the reason why iFi sells purifying adapters, I assume. So if I can't yet afford such an adapter, is then wifi a better option since it is not physically connected to the system?
I understand that there are very expensive 1000 dollars ethernet cables and I'm sure differences can be heard. Watching a few of your cool videos has convinced me that it is so otherwise you wouldn't have put a system like yours together.
    Thanks again and cheers !

@@net_news I had a look it might be ok very low impedance 23 ohms it would probably work very well between turntable and preamp making the cartridge more sensitive, but run long distance like 10 m should boost up the treble and the bass, but I'm not sure about as interconnects for other parts of the equipment. you want to stick to 43 -47 ohms but give it a go see not tried it that low so who knows!

The MAC & Sonus Faber's sounded much better over TH-cam in this example, very strange as the Electrocompaniet and Mcintosh shoudl've came across much fuller, it was sadly very thin and clinical sounding. Paul, a little terminology clarification...ambiance-rather a mood or feeling in a room like candlelight. ambience...the spaciousness of sound in a room so as to define the dimensions of the room a recording was made. ambient sound. it was defined early on in the absolute sound magazine.

@@vpconcepts9838 ..@~16:54 in the yt, you say the word...ambiance...regarding the sound. this is where the distinction is. it should be ambience which doesn't imply mood or feeling, but the spaciousness of the sound itself as it is more ambient.
i hope that helps. i know that spell check will correct it to ambiance but that is a problem with spell check.

Yes, the Ifi spdif purifier added a taller, deeper, & wider soundstage that enveloped the listening area. In my Pat Metheny Tro-Live album for example, this created a sense of ambiance in the room as the plates were clinking with silverware in the audience as they ate, putting me in the space of the actual performance, giving me an "I was there" impression. If I didn't convey that correctly at that time stamp, my apologies. 👌💯🎼✨

I like stuff that works and know that works sometimes you turn me onto something in your vids , thanks . i know you dont run coax cable on your system but if you did they sell galvanic isolators for coax and they really work and keep the cable companies miles of grounding issues interfering with your system just keep that in the back of your mind I dont know if you have one on your modem , PS sells them for 50 there just as good on amazon for 25

ifi is a cheap company. Their customer service is a joke. Email-only. You have to wait 24 hours before any type of response. When you do hear back you will wait another 24 hours for questions unanswered or confused with what is wrong. Let me give an example. I purchased the ifi UNO, "DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY"! There are 3 EQ settings: gaming, Video, and Music. There is no difference in sound.
I mentioned this to Jon and Nick the 2 customer service reps from ifi. Talk about clueless, neither one had a straight answer. So another 24 hours goes by until they sent me a list of checks to perform. After reading the checklist the UNO is designed for windows or PlayStation. Sorry, I run MAC! ifi does not have any type of software to run on apple products. This I was told by Jon. Really?
As for vpconcepts using the line conditioners on his laptop and home system, sure it's going to work some of the wiring used is not oxygen-free pure copper windings, cheap wire from China

I'm sorry to hear your struggle ZeroCool!
I've had great customer support & all items work as promised, actually above my expectations. The components inside are audiophile grade & they list them all on the website page of each product. I did have issues with the Go Bar not working with my iPhone, yet I've had subscribers say no issues on theirs. My Go Blu has been 100% solid with daily use.
In my experience, It's common for customer support to take 24hrs to get back to you with most audio companies, since it's often Reps that get back to you in this industry. I'll take that over a call center like Sony any day! Thank you for watching and sharing your experience with us ! 👌💯🎼✨
