  • We test a Chinese knockoff of a truma combi D6E for the US market compatible with 110v. Uses diesel or electric for fuel, operates on 12v control. We bench test furnace and water heater recovery times and shower capacity. Can we get a full shower in only 2.6 gallons?

Neat idea. I'm trying to use the least amount of fuel types as possible. Mostly electric now but hope to switch as much as possible to diesel at some point. Neat product and will look forward to seeing in real world use.

Watch em all, it took over a month of weekends to get it figured out and installed. On the first trip now and it’s working good. You’ll want an anti scald valve like I bought in a later vid.

The original Truma D heater on the ‘Hot’ setting heats the water to 60c and then switches off allowing the water to continue to heat until 70c in order to sterilise the water. This may be what’s happening with this counterfeit unit given it looks almost identical to the original. Europeans generally have mixer taps so can manually cool the hot water. This is great to allow for a longer shower.

Thanks for this information. FYI In a later vid I ended up installing an adjustable anti-scald valve near the tank which has been working well. I am not running it on “hot” though. It does still dribble out the overpressure valve even on the “warm” setting.

Excellent review. Thanks for doing it!.
Didn't you say early on though that it was 220 volts AC?

The Truma combi is 230v European. This has 110v.

It’s a virtual copy of the Truma at half the price over here in the U.K. even the controller is identical. We have the gas version of the Truma and the boost mode on it is to boost hot water to kill legionnaires virus, we rarely use it though. As for showers we use our shower to wet down then switch off soap up then switch on again that way we get a reasonable shower, don’t expect the same as a home shower.

Any issues with the truma making the water dangerously hot?

truma combi does runs on 120v! heres a segment from the installation manual! (120 volt electrical plug (only on Combi eco plus and Combi comfort plus models) and they are available in north America but it has to be installed by a company registered with trauma if you want the warranty. although you will be waiting at least 6 months because of back orders lol

I’ve seen the propane version here, but not the diesel.

a good mixing valve (with anti scalding) would solve that hot mode problem and at the same time it would allow longer shower because heat is not "wasted" to too hot water. Interesting video. You probably said it but I missed it, how much did that heater cost?

It was just over $1000 including fast shipping. I had it in about a week, it had to go thru customs. Not too bad considering I was already in for $400 to replace my propane hot water.

You need 12mm push fit fittings for the water connections.

      Basically unobtainable in the US

Sure. Make sure you specify 110v if you are in the US. m.alibaba.com/product/62176881750/Belief-air-and-water-integrated-diesel.html

I think you really need to test it as it would be used with a true faucet with a mixing valve and you are not getting a true reading or approximation of how it’s going to really work. Plumbing code actually only deals with the anti scald in the fixtures.. the temperature of the water from a water heater is not mandated, it is recommended to be around 125 F.

I got enough of a sense to know that mixing will result in a longer shower than raw hot will. But I like the idea of a mixing valve, perhaps right after the tank. Looking into that now.

@@ThisOldBus Definitely.. most of the diesel water heaters (aqua hot etc) have a tempering valve just after the heater.
