- Traveling with cats! We recently moved from Florida to California and drove the 2500 miles with Cole and Marmalade… the boys were actually great travelers! Here's a brief list of what we did to prepare for our journey to make it as comfortable as possible for them...
• Cole and Marmalade were microchipped and they received their Rabies vaccine and we took the documents in the car with us in case we needed them.
• We had this website bookmarked in case we needed emergency vet care: www.aaha.org/p...
• My wife designed and built a cat carrier for the backseat of our car this had two levels and gave Cole and Marm as much space as possible to move around and check out views, a litter box and water/dry food, plus we covered this up when needed with towels for even more shade. This was in our apartment for weeks before the journey so they slept in it and got their scent all over the carrier!
• We took them on short car rides in pet carriers to get them used to the car before we embarked on our trip
• We collected some cat tents and tunnels that could fold down and travel with us so we could bring them into the hotel rooms each night so they had familiar smells and hiding spots. (we travelled 4 days and 3 nights)
• Plus we took a dirty litter box with us (thanks to advice from Jackson Galaxy) so in the new apartment they immediately had their scent marked litter box available to make them feel more comfortable …. and for the few days in Florida after the movers had taken almost all of our belongings, we set up base camp in one bedroom with all this stuff so when it was the same set-up in the hotel rooms and now our new apartment in California, so it would seem like just another regular day for them :)

Moving to a new home can be quite some stress for cats. When I moved from Frankfurt - Germany into the vicinity of Bremen (that's about 280 miles) due to a new job, it was not too easy for my two cats "Kitty" and "Kathy". Since I had cats nearly all of my life, I made some preparations. I bought an oversized transportation box and placed it in a quiet corner of my apartment some days before moving. At the day of moving and prior the arrival of the moving company, I've fed my cats well and then put them into the huge transportation box, which I then covered with a blanket. After the moving staff was done with their work I carried my "kitties in the box" into my car. All the 280 miles I haven't heard much of them. A short meow from them every now and then, as if they were asking whether I am still there. So I "meowed" back. Upon arrival at our new home, the cats and I shared one of the 4 rooms over the night, just to cool down, and give them a chance to adjust. Next day, after the moving company placed all my furniture and left, Kitty and Kathy quickly explored our new home, which is about twice as big as the previous apartment. They adapted quickly and now love to chase each other in this - for a single person - rather spacious home (900sqft). If done right, moving cats won't end up in stress and drama. Anything is much funnier with cats
I took Licorice, my black cat, with me to a writing seminar in Lincoln City, Oregon. I had his carrier with me, but Licorice decided he'd rather use his leash and collar. He spent the two days driving on the front seat, curled up next to me. He had his tags on and he was microchipped. I stopped every few hours to walk him a bit and let him drink, eat, and use his cat box. We were gone for eight days total, four days driving down and back up, and four days in Lincoln City. Licorice was a good traveler. I did spoil him rotten with a trip to McDonalds so he could have his chicken nugget. He was very well behaved and totally chill about being away from home.

I heartily approve approve of the new digs! Plenty of high perches for the boys. They seem to be settling in quite well in a relatively short time. Of course, the two of you spent enough quality time with them to acclimate them to their new home. You're very good kitty parents. Keep the videos coming, I love them! 😍
In my next life, I want to come back as a cat in your house and be spoiled ROTTEN. Huge hugs to Cole and Marmalade - and kudos to their incomparable human parents :-D

It's very heartwarming to know that you take such good care of your pets and go the extra mile just to make sure that they feel comfortable through the journey . In today's times of animal cruelty, it's good to know that kind people like you are there somewhere. I totally support your spay/neuteur and adopt campaign and keep up your good work ! :)

Welcome to Sunny California!! That was quite an enjoyable trip to watch! Wonderful! We think that this would be very helpful for anyone who is planning a long trip with their cats! The Furballs would have found that secret cat entrance under the bed the 1st night so loved that tip! And we might have to make that two story condo just in case of emergency's (we have cat carriers for all too!) Looking forward to the next installment!

I drove from Connecticut to Colorado with my cat when I moved. He slept a lot in the car. We just kept a large carrier open for him and he could go in and out. We put a litter box on the floor in the back and water was accessible. At each hotel, we put all of his stuff in the bathroom and he quickly learned the drill! As soon as we got to a new hotel, he'd run into the bathroom to make sure we put all his stuff in the right places! He was a great travel companion. I was surprised when we adopted from a rescue organization and they wanted to know what we would do if we moved. Of course the cats come too!

I just found y'all channel. I want to tell you that I think this was one of my fav vids so far. All the care and prep y'all did to prepare y'all babies for travel. To reduce stress on them.
I'm amazed at how well Cole and Marmalade used the carriers, traveled in the car and adapted to new surroundings and hotel rooms! It must be because of your preparations. Never has one of my furkids been willing (or calm) about entering a carrier, and they've always hated the car. :( Thanks for the amazing video!
I absolutely love how hard you both work to make the move easier on your cats. People dont often realize how tramatizing a move can be on a pet until the pet starts showing signs of it. Kudos to you both for making sure your furry children were safe and happy!

Cole and Marmalade Hi, could you make a tutorial on how to make that cage and all the materials you used? My boyfriend and I in a couple of months will be moving from Arizona to Colorado and this is our first out of state trip with our cats (Luna is a fluffy white girl and Gizmo a cute grey boy, both from the same litter) and I feel like this would be perfect to make a cage like that for them! I want them to be comfortable and the least bit of stressed during this trip. Please and thank you 😊

When I moved across the country (Fl to Nv) I was lucky that all but one motel had platform beds so my cat couldn't get under. The one with a regular bed he wouldn't come out from under and had to have maintenance tilt the bed up. In the car though he was great. Wouldn't share the driving so it took an extra two days, but he was a good listener.

Smart thinking checking under the boxspring for holes. Never had this problem with my own cats but the last two kittens I fostered decided to climb on in there and get stuck and after two instances of this happening, I had to get my dad to come help me get a small tarp stapled beneath it so the incident wouldn't repeat itself again.

Two adult cats, collars and microchipped, together in a large dog carrier strapped (via seatbelt) on the front seat of my truck. I turned off the airbag on their side as it would have been like having it on with an infant in a car seat there (BIG DANGEROUS NO-NO) We played "Music My Pet" over and over for the 150 mile trip, and they slept most of the time. Only woke to watch the wipers during a brief rainstorm. When we arrived at our new home, I unloaded their litterbox first and placed them in the bathroom while I brought in their food, water, dishes and cat trees. They did great. Best trip ever.

You could always rent a caravan and let them stay in it overnight. That's what I'd do.
My old cat, Ozaltof, has to have 80s music on. Otherwise he goes nuts.
I feel so proud! When I moved I pretty much did the same things to prepare, but my cats stressed out in the car =( The only option I had was to get mild sedatives from the vet and they traveled fine. They just couldn't get used to being in the car at all! I did everything too, played with them, cat nip in the car, toys, but nope, they hated it lol
Anyway, I am just amazed at how well they traveled. Amazing kitties you have there

We moved 3 years ago with our fish and 4 cats from The Netherlands to the south of Spain, 2500km. We weren't so creative and they spent every day on the road in their travel basket, poor baby's... But they made it okay. Great video, wish I had seen it before the move, it would have made their trip bit comfortable. Thank you for sharing your happy sweet angels adventures with us. Like you I have had both cats and dogs all my life. Can't imagine life without them. Grew-up in the military so moving with our furry siblings was the norm.
Recently I relocated to Wisconsin from the state of Washington. The whole move was centered around how best to do this without too much trauma to my fur babies (five cats and one large dog). Ended up being done in two stages. Stage one, I drove out to Wisconsin first to start working and looking for a home (this took two months). My niece stayed back in Washington to care for the fur babies. Once I found a house, I flew back to pick up the babies and move our belongings.
Purchased three cages two large (2 cats each) and one small (1 cat) for the cats traveling comfort and my safety as the driver. Created a loft in the cages so the disposable litter box can be below with their food and water and bedding in the loft. Rented a large SUV (since my tiny car was in Wisconsin) loaded the cats and dog in with all their necessities plus my niece's and mine. Kept their cages covered in a comforter to provide for a safe cave feel. This was a four day three night road trip. All traveled really well. They all are liking the new home and having Mom around full time again.

They do not enjoy the car at all - I'm going to try building something like your homemade cat carrier and doing short rides leading up to it. What a great idea! This was very helpful video!!! The cat cage in the back of SUV is brilliant. I was wondering what to do for a move half way cross country with our 2 cats.
If they only ever get into the carrier and the car to go see the vet, they will not be very happy to go when you move... so great idea to take them on short hops. Also, if you walk your cats on a harness, take them in the car to the park once in awhile, just so that they don't always associate the car with having shots at the v-e-t (cat's can't spell, can they? ;-)
I'm definite getting a cat when I move into my boyfriend's house.. xD

Taking the cats on practice road trips is a great idea. I thought this was more video of the move from California to Illinois, so I was totally confused as you went through Alabama, Mississippi, Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona. That would be quite the long way!

What a wonderful video. Loooove the way you take care of and understand what these two charmers need. Have to tell you that this video have solved a huge problem. I am moving to London from Denmark and have bee pondering if I should bring my two kittens (who are the spitting image of Cole and Marmalade) or find them new homes here. Finding this video, so much portraying what I am going trough made me decide to bring them.... feels like a sign :-). Thank you for posting this great video.
Always take your babies with you. I know people who have re-homed their sweeties, only to arrive at their new home and really wish they'd kept their babies. You'll be glad you chose to take them with you, trust me. :-)

I spoil my cats, but after watching this, I don't spoil them enough. I love watching cats explore new places: it makes it all so much more exciting and fun. Finding all the best hidey places, figuring out the best jumpy paths, new smells, new windows to watch out of... almost makes me want to move. nah, I'll just rearrange the furniture again. ;)

Cole and Marmalade are such good boys! I loved how they explored everything in each hotel you went to :) I liked the homemade cat carrier. Someday when I moved I will be taking about 9 cats about an hour and a half away from where I am now. You give me hope that it can be done :)
The only problem, my future husband ( currently boyfriend) isnt much of a cat lover. He is nice to them but he is more of a dog person. I pray he comes to love them as much as I do. Ps. Love Marmalade's purring.
Oh and my cats go out of their way to greet him :D. He says my cats are like no other he has seen. He says they are so friendly :)
Lori H I know your comment was 2 years ago but I hope it all worked out. It has been my experience that you can't really make a guy that isn't really into cats in to a cat person. It's funny that most of the time they expect YOU to change if you really want to be with them and love them, but most DON'T EVEN TRY excepting us as cat lovers- even if they knew that from the beginning! Yeah I love that part of you, that you help rescue and care for all these little critters that have no one- until you start living together. Then it's nothing but fight after fight. So if it worked out, good for you! If it didn't, take your cats advise- kick some dirt over that shit and move on. You don't need that kind of crap in your life, surround yourself with those on the same mission as you. I'd give a kidney to find someone like Chris, (ironic, since that's my ex's name), and to have cats as sweet, playful, and laid back as Cole and Marm.
1-You guys are so empathetic towards making your cats as comfortable and happy as possible. Great job! 2- I realize it would be a huge pain to recreate the large portable cat carrier you created, but do you think you could make a video at least showing the materials used? IF you could show a video creating at least 1/2 or a mini version of it that'd be awesome. I like how you had the bunk bed options for them. 3- Perhaps you guys should consider creating an affordable line of cat toys and furniture (if you're not already) I loved creating stuff for my cats when I had them and still do it for strays/ferals.Thank you! I am moving in a month from oklahoma to colorado with 2 big dogs and a cat... Not sure how well we will all fit in my pt cruiser. I suppose ill have to keep the dogs in the back somehow and my cat upfront. Or the cat with my mom in the uhaul. Wish us luck!
Taylor Campbell There are all sorts of barriers available to block access between the front and back seats. They are designed to keep the big dog in the back seat or the cargo space behind the back seat. Check any pet supply store.
None of them are tight enough to keep a cat or a small dog back there.
please create a step by step of building the cat travel thingee and installing it in the car.
I'd love to do short riad trips with the cats, but I need a safe, secure and comfortable back seat solution, that is two levels, holds litter box, food and water and provides privacy while allowing them to look out the window. Your wife's solution looks great
I love watching your vlogs. I can go hours, watching one after another, and I will watch the same ones multiple times. You have such a great relationship with your boys, and I can tell how much they love you and the wife. Please never stop filming.

HOW did they find so many hotel/motels that would take cats??? Dogs, sure, but I’ve never found one to take cats. I’m super jealous. I had a cat that loved to travel. She didn’t mind at all. We fixed up the whole back of cars and SUVs for her and she was comfortable and happy. We were very lucky though. Good cat and I miss her so.
