  • Jean Ritchie, “High Hills and Mountains”, Full Album, 1979, Flying Fish Records
The tracks in order are: (Side One) Thousand Mile Blues; Sugar On the Floor; The Cuckoo; With Kitty I’ll Go; Little Pack O’ Tailors; The L&N Don’t Stop Here Anymore. (Side Two) High Hills and Mountains; Old George’s Square; The Royal Telephone; Old Daddy Grumble; Here Sits A Young Lady; Jemmy Taylor-O; Let The Sun Shine Down On Me.
"Jean Ritchie (December 8, 1922 - June 1, 2015) was an American folk music singer, songwriter, and Appalachian dulcimer player. Her career formed a kind of bridge between the traditional and modern forms of folk music: in her youth she learned folksongs in the traditional way (orally, from her family and members of her community); and in adulthood she became a successful modern folksinger, promulgating songs in public through concerts and recordings. She was called by some the 'Mother of Folk'."

Omigosh. This is finally uploaded to You Tube. I remember when Jean Ritchie spent a year in Fresno as the folk artist in residence at Fresno State. Thanks so much, Ray Huffman!

Thanks for putting this on YT... I never liked commercialised country, this is so similar to celtic/irish music pure
I was intrigued by the song Here Sits A Young Lady.. could not find the lyrics so sat down and listened to them and here they are as best I can transcribe
    My Parents raised Me Tenderly
They had no child but me
But my mind was set on rambling around
and with him I couldn’t agree
There was a girl in this same town
    She was so wondrous fair
There was no other girl in the country run
That with her I could compare
I asked her if she would agree
For me to cross over the Maine
She said she would prove true to me
    Till I return again
I got my things went to the dock
Her tears shown down like wine
We kissed shook hands and parted
    I left My girl behind
As I walked out one morning
    To view Old George’s square
The mail post boat ust arose
And the post boy met me there
He handed me a letter which give me
    to understand
That the girl I left behind me had married
    another man
I turned myself all around and about
I knew not what to doing
I read on a few lines further
And I found the news were true
    I followed the old train
    That company I will resign
I’ll ramble around from town to town
For the girl I left behind

Phantastic! A good friend sent me here. I said, I love Joan Baez's voice - if only she had less vibrato. My friend said, go with Jean Ritchie, then. He was plain right!

I’ve had this album since the late 70s and still love it. It’s still in good condition. I recently bought a USB turntable and found software to convert to digital files and learned how to upload to You Tube. Still going through my large album collection to try to find albums that have not been posted - learning that’s not easy to find!

Lovely album. I seem not to have it in my vinyl collection. It seems a bit more modern than older albums. We had Jean in our neck of the woods when we did an Appalachian holiday show at California Revels in Oakland probably mid '90's. Oakland CA 2022

Someone should isolate these tracks for posting. I don’t know how to. I love this album. I love Jean Ritchie.

I could do that, but each track would have to be recorded separately and uploaded to my channel. That would be very time consuming and I'm not sure what the purpose of doing that would be.

    • @rayhuffman6430
      @rayhuffman6430  2 ปีที่แล้ว

Other than making it easier to find favorite tracks, of course. I doubt that few, if any people, have this album. So I would have to do it. I might consider it, since I have the time, if you really think it would be worth it.

Yknow, “sugar on the floor” is a happy song, but I find it tearjerking and psychedelic as well. There’s a lot of reverb and it’s sweetly out of tune.
