i really want to learn to sing these songs for I have always loved Cathal's phrasing.; he sings with such ease. I met him on my thirty first birthday on the 31st July at a festival in County Donegal. The man is brilliant, I am just reading Sinead O'Conner's book "Rememberings" and she talks about that Bel Canto singing with ease. Cathal is that pure essence of that .Thank you so much for honoring this great singer.

A 'solo' album in the true sense - nothing but himself and the occasional bit of bodhran or guitar! Thanks for uploading, I've had McConnell's other solo album for a long time but never the chance to hear this. My daughter was a newborn; my wife and mother-in-law were incensed that I went to two shows, at The Towne Crier Cafe in Pawling NY and The Turning Point in Piermont NY. I just ordered a sealed copy of this LP for my now 27 year-old daughter.

I must have played this album a few hundred times back then, listening to it with friends who loved it as much as I did, listening to it alone a lot too. Out of all of Ralph McTell’s albums this has always been my favorite. His gentle self shines through. The sound is quite good. Right now my eyes are filled with tears. 07:25 "Le garçon empoisonné" took me by surprise. Breandán Breathnach once made the sweeping generalisation that traditional songs don't jump language barriers - but here we have Lord Rendal (Child no. 12; Roud no. 10) in French. I suspect that this version is Canadian, as the ballad is widespread across North America.

Thanks for putting this on YT... I never liked commercialised country, this is so similar to celtic/irish music pure I was intrigued by the song Here Sits A Young Lady.. could not find the lyrics so sat down and listened to them and here they are as best I can transcribe My Parents raised Me Tenderly They had no child but me But my mind was set on rambling around and with him I couldn’t agree There was a girl in this same town She was so wondrous fair There was no other girl in the country run That with her I could compare I asked her if she would agree For me to cross over the Maine She said she would prove true to me Till I return again I got my things went to the dock Her tears shown down like wine We kissed shook hands and parted I left My girl behind As I walked out one morning To view Old George’s square The mail post boat ust arose And the post boy met me there He handed me a letter which give me to understand That the girl I left behind me had married another man I turned myself all around and about I knew not what to doing I read on a few lines further And I found the news were true I followed the old train That company I will resign I’ll ramble around from town to town For the girl I left behind Written by Jean Ritchie

Thank you for posting this! I’ve been an American follower of McTell since 1972 and a visit from a couple of Brits. We exchanged a LOT of music over the few days I was their temporary stopping point, and when they left they gave me their copy of what may have been his first album. It contains Streets of London, Michael in the Garden (which I especially like since my name is Michael and all my best friends tell me there’s something wrong with me), and The Ferryman … I’m sorry I can remember other songs by name at the moment, but I’ll bet I can still sing along with the album. As a budding singer songwriter at the time I was introduced to McTell, he immediately became a mentor, and through the years, still trying to improve my own work, I have continued to soak up any and everything I can find of McTell’s. I have never had the pleasure of seeing him in live performance and I may never, which be my loss. I have found him a consummate songwriter, storyteller, interpreter of fine poetry (his Summer Girls inspired by Dylan Thomas’ works, for instance), and skilled in a variety of genre of guitar styles. I was 23 when I first heard him, I’m 73 now, and I hope Ralph McTell lives and performs forever…. Or at least til I’m not here to listen to him anymore.

Your summary is totally correct. Its a great pity he remains so unrecognised, perhaps apart from That song. Though I live in Australia, have been fortunate to see this true master in concert, perhaps 5 times, over a 50 year period. His music is much better enjoyed live where he simply shines and you are able to sample something of his wonderful personality.
