The actor who played the "lust" kill guy actually deprived himself of sleep to enhance his frantic behaviour in the interview scene. That is impressive dedication for your role, no matter how small. I hope he got more acting jobs after this film.

The year this was made was an EXTREMELY great year for Spacey. He was relatively unknown prior to 1995, and was in Seven, The Usual Suspects (another excellent thriller), and Outbreak. 3 very big movies that year, and IMO those films really lead him to his stardom that came afterwards. He followed those up in 1998 with The Negotiator, where he gives an outstanding performance (the film also stars Samuel L Jackson) and is also worth checking out.

    • @mikeat2637

His most eclectic film is "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil" based on the true crime thriller of the same name. It's definitely worth a watch and a review. One of his first roles was in the TV series Wiseguy in 1988, where he played a crooked arms dealer named Mel Profit and was paired with B-movie queen Joan Severance. Another great role was in 1997's LA Confidential. Just so many great roles for Spacey.

David Fincher had to fight for that ending. The studio thought it was too dark and somber. Thank god David Fincher got what he wanted.
Also, the only murder shown is the detective murdering the suspect, yet it's one of the most disturbing crime thrillers ever. David Fincher is a genius.

It wasn't a clock at the beginning but a metronome. I used one to keep rhythm while learning to play piano. I always assumed Somerset was using it to help him stay centered against all the chaotic city noise and stress from the job. Matching the rhythm of the metronome to his heart rate and breathing to stay centered and calm.

  • @LordVolkov

    "He's really selling it"
That's character actor Leland Orser. He crushes his one scene as the Lust 'survivor'. We only get a few flashes of the murder, and the horror of it is entirely from the Polaroid of the harness and Leland's testimony. Absolutely chilling.
I always enjoy seeing Leland pop up because he is always fantastic. For one of his larger roles - Very Bad Things, with Jon Favreau and Christian Slater

    "What's in the box?"
Fun Fact: When filming the "sloth" victim scene, the SWAT officers were NOT told that the victim was still alive. When the victim coughs and scares the SWAT officers, that reaction is real.
Location Location Fact: The diner that Somerset (Morgan Freeman) and Tracy (Gwyneth Paltrow) meet at is the same diner that Denzel Washington and Ethan Hawke meet at in Training Day (2001). In fact, they meet in the same booth. It's the Quality Coffee Shop in downtown LA.
Standing Together Fact: The ending in the movie is the ending in the original draft of the screenplay that the actors and director had signed on to. Producer Arnold Kopelson had it re-written, and the ending was changed to John Doe (Kevin Spacey) kidnapping Tracy (Gwyneth Paltrow), with Mills and Somerset racing to save her life. When David Fincher, Brad Pitt, and Morgan Freeman read the new ending, they all demanded that the original ending be put back in or they wouldn't do the movie.
Art Over Ego Fact: The producers intended that Kevin Spacey should receive top billing at the start of the movie, but he insisted that his name not appear in the opening credits, so as to surprise the audience with the identity of the killer. To compensate, he is listed twice in the closing credits, once before the credits start rolling and once in the rolling credits in order of appearance. Another advantage from Spacey's point of view, as he saw it, was that he was excluded from the film's marketing during its release, meaning he didn't have to make any public appearances or do any interviews.

  • @LordVolkov
    @LordVolkov ปีที่แล้ว +4

Though not mentioned, I can't help but think that John Doe also had to kill David and Tracy's dogs 😭 They never would have let him hurt their mama without a fight...

One more thing...on the stairwell when Doe meets Mills, PRIDE leads David to blurt out his own name in anger.
Which led Doe to seek out his personal info upon calling the precinct.
Thus, Mills' Pride leads to his wife's (and child's) deaths.

I've always had mixed feelings on this movie. There are great things in it, but the things I don't like about it outweigh them. I know just about any good or great movie could be nitpicked to death, but I've always thought it would have been more believable if Mills had started beating the hell out of Doe at the end instead of giving him an easy death. Also, someone as smart as Somerset (or even Mills or someone else in the pd) would have wondered that, hey, this guy went out of his way to take pictures of us and must have done so for a reason. Perhaps we and those around us (like a wife) might need extra protection.

The ending segment actually had a few scenes cut that showed Gwyneth Paltrows head in the box.. but Fincher couldnt ram it through without screwing with the Ratings - so they cut them.
Funny thing is.. the studio kept the head - and later it would appear in the movie 'Contagion' .. also starring Gwyneth Paltrow (albeit in a somewhat minor role).

    • @voiceover2191

Showing the head would have weakened the movie. They also shot an altenate ending where Freeman sacrifices himself and shoots Spacey before Pitt can do it, also a weaker ending. The one we eventually ended up with was the right one, but damn, it was a tough one.

I wish more people took the overall manipulative nature of this movie seriously.
FYI, the Pride crime scene was a foreshadow of the end.
    Examples:
    1) head in a frame....head in a box.
    2) Mills' wife slept a lot and was loopy when Somerset came to their place, (Pills).
    3) she called the precinct a few times (Phone).
This movie (like the rest) is linked to so many others by its actors.
    Example:
The man who played the brothel operator is also known for playing "Fun Boy" in 'The Crow'.
His final appearance in THAT story involves him in a room with a blonde when a third person arrives CARRYING something...a guitar.
Fun Boy gets fatally jabbed several times which kinda sorta resembles the Lust crime.
    Compare and learn people

Spacey actually insisted that his name not be in the opening credits, as he didn't want the audience to spend their time wondering when he was going to show up. Pretty remarkable movie for many reasons. One of my favorites is the unexpected moment when the killer walks in and surrenders before his murders are complete. I'd never seen anything like that in a movie. The cops don't catch him, and instead spend the movie, as Sommerset says, "picking up the pieces."

Spacey had a great year! This and Usual Suspects! This director, like Kubrick Cronenburg Sonnenfeld Fincher Lynch, just see movies, differently!

Natalie, I only needed to see this once..Made that strong of a spooky imprint, didn't want to watch it again. One thing about Spacey, whether in "Usual Suspects" , this , or his creepy Lex Luthor in "Superman Returns" the dude's played some psychotic mo-fos! 24:05..I think the Lawyer's bluffing, or overconfident...NO jury would let that lunatic walk or buy an insanity plea, considering the careful planning he did to pull off his killing spree.

The last two sins were envy and wrath. Envy is the sin of John Doe himself, wrath is the sin of Mills. Tracy had no sin, she just became the means by which he provoked Mills anger, there was no other way to provoke his anger so strong. John Doe almost created a masterpiece (from his point of view), but in my opinion the murder of Tracy is the weak point of his work, it was possible to do without innocent victims. But he just got too lazy to come up with another way to provoke anger. So he has two sins at once: envy and sloth.

A lot of Fincher’s stuff you don’t see that much, if I remember correctly in the script in certain scenes it specifically says the audience will never see this. Fincher said his philosophy was this is the most horrible awful thing you’ve ever seen and I’m NOT going to show it to you

I think it's a psychological thriller because it deals with mental taunting by a serial killer. I never saw the head in the box coming. Total surprise. I enjoyed seeing it on the big screen.

If you want to watch some good Halloween films, check out two oldies but goodies, Mr. Boogedy and Bride of Boogedy, from 1986 when Disney was still pumping good family fare. My kids loved these films and they are now 42 and 38 and the grandkids loved them when they were small.

There was an extremely quick, (almost subliminal), flash of Tracy's face just before David shoots John Doe. I didn't see this movie in the theater but I don't remember that being there when I first saw it on cable. Is that something added in on a 'director's cut' version? Does anyone know?

Trust me, train sounds are something you can get used to. Our summer house is by the train tracks and trains go by day and night. First night you might wake up to them, but after that you are so used to it, you will sleep like a log. That is because your brain does not register that as a sound of a danger, so it gets filtered.
