Transvestite became more commonly called "crossdresser" because people confused it for transgender. words are funny because in this case they have a pretty clear meaning where "vestite" comes from the Italian word "dressed"... whereas gender means exactly what it always means. complicating this issue however is that some transvestites enjoy the idea of "playing" a female character, which begins to slowly blend into the idea of drag-queens, which as far as I know range from transgender to transvestite. Transvestite isn't exactly a derogatory term unless you intend to "invalidate" the chosen gender of a transgender person, but otherwise its just a technical term, perhaps a bit outdated.
