The fact that Fez lied about saving it from that night makes this make so much MORE sense than just being weirdly intimate (also it explains why ANYONE would save something from an event so unremarkable at the time: they wouldn't). It was a misjudged attempt at emotional manipulation, at a time when Fez was beginning to feel insecure about his position in their partnership as Ron had finally started to display genuine dissatisfaction. I think it largely backfired because Fez has no actual empathy and therefore no real understanding of how this would actually make someone feel.
A wierd lie
I think he didn't keep the matches from that night. He got them from a listener in 2002 and put them away because by that point he did want a keepsake from his past. Then he found them and forgot where they came from and thought he must have saved them from that night. He then made up this whole thing in his head. He then tried to use them to manipulate Ron, but ended up pushing him away.

I always assumed Fez was in love with Ron, especially when Ron took exception to O&A floating the idea on the air.
I believe if Ron was gay, there would be not way that Ron would be with Fez in any sexual or romantic way.
Hands down the funniest thing that I have listened to in a long time. Ron is the fucking king.

I honestly think Fez did not actually save the matchbook from that night. I think he thinks he did though. The listener gave it to him and he put it away. Years later, during the start of his crazy time, he finds it and thinks he saved it from that night and gives it to Ron.

That's the kind of thing a husband or wife does, not a friend, even a life long friend. There are ways to get a meaningful gift for a friend the matchbook was not the way to go.
I think if Fez hadn't come out and gone bat shit crazy, Ron wouldn't have been as freaked out by the gift. Also, if Fez had told the truth and said he got the matches in 2002 from a listener things wouldn't have gotten as weird either. His whole thing about lying that he took them that night is what freaked Ron out.
I think Fez found the matches in a box and forgot where they came from amd made up the back story.

If Fez is gay for Ron then this gift is fucked up. But if Fez just kept the matches for memories than there is no issue here. I know plenty of people that save movie stubs or other stupid shit for memories. I don't do that shit but it isn't weird unless Fez has a crush on Ron. Then its fucked

This isn't the same as saving a trinket from the old Ron and Ron show for 20 years, or from Ron's first time on air or something. Something that would reflect their professional landmarks. It's the _fist_night_they_met. There's basically only romantic connotations to it.
I'm hoping Fez turns out to be a hoarder with stacks of old newspapers and amateur wrestling fliers from the clearwater ymca, it's the only context that saving this matchbook would make sense.

I think you’re referring to Shelby, he has a pretty feminine voice. Ron addresses hicks around 4:00, and he speaks. You have a ton of OnA and Ron fez lore to get caught up on! Lucky you.
Worst of the AFRO show should be something you listen to. Also something that puts this into more context is “Ron loses it with Fez” and “About what happened yesterday.

I don't think this ages well for Ron. I'm on Fez's side. He knew it was a meaningful meeting, and he was a thoughtful enough guy to hang on to something that could someday be a meaningful keepsake. Don't be afraid of the platonic love of true male friendship, Ron!
It's the fact that fez lied and Threatened his own life over it. Although a lot of ron and fez is a work. Depending upon how lucid fez was. Something that was revealed after fez died. Vito said at times he would be so uncomfortable because of what was going on in studio. Then during the break fez would direct the next segment and ramp up his crazy. So even the staff didn't know until it was confirmed as a bit
I'm with Fezzy, too. Sometimes those keepsakes are kept by accident and coincidentally over a long period of time is worth showing. Ron has trouble taking it all in at once. It is pretty outstanding, though. Think about keeping them in tact while moving. That's makes them all the more special.
Ben Watts Fez literally said he kept the matches on purpose. He said he purposely took one pack of matches and went out of his way to keep them in good condition for 20 years.

This was way past the days of the show being good! Nothing better than wjfk and wnew days, even after ESD and Earl left this XM show was bad! Ron was just an asshole at this point! Fez was the best radio personality EVER during the wnew and wjfk days! Shame what happened, and all the extra ppl in studio was a huge mistake!
In Ron's defense, a big part of that was Fez's fault. Things changed for them when they left WNEW and went to JFK. Fez hated it there, grew resentful of Ron, and the downward spiral of the crying Fez began. Ron didn't want to go to XM but did it for Fez. Their relationship slowly deteriorated and never recovered from that point. Ron himself said he only stayed with Fez because of the "Brand". Just like O&A, R&F knew the product together would be more successful than split. Now, Ron and Anthony are miserable and scraping by on their respective programs, while Fez and Opie are dead (Fez Literally, Opie metaphorically).

Thank you didn't know that, I did know Fez hated JFK for some reason, I often wonder what exactly happened to Fez as most ppl, but he was awesome on the wnew show, even better than Ron IMO... Never knew Ron didn't want to go to xm, any reason why that u know? I never liked how he was very harsh to Fez in a lot of ways, but Fez like everyone never stood up to Ron, that really pissed me off why everyone was afraid of Ron
@@CaptanF0rever I think Ron is happy. He’s a old guy and a few years before RF ended he said “at this point I’ve been in radio longer than I will be in radio” meaning he couldn’t handle radio with Fez. They loved each other (platonic) but were extremely resentful of each other. Fez more than Ron.
He also said MANY times “doing this show is free money. You come in, bullshit, get a paycheck. This is what I’ve done my whole life. Just hanging out.” Sounds like he’s gotta great life.
@@JHOFF111 Fez also started to have a visceral hatred for EVERYONE but Ron. People didn’t want to do the show because they had to face a 50 year old man who cried constantly or went on predictable bitching rants if he wasn’t completely silent.
He turned mean as a snake and didn’t want to do his job, but wanted to be paid and given credit. He mistreated and screamed at the staff enough to get formal complaints. Like all people with Fez’s mental issues he projected all of his hatred’s onto literally EVERYONE else and refused to take a joke.
When he screamed and insulted people some of them his subordinates he said they all were “bullying him”. When someone called him out he said it was a trap meant to give him heart attacks and kill him.
And its such a tragedy because like you said. He was the best! A truly fascinating study of how mental illness can warp and grind people down. If it can happen to someone like Fez and turn him into a husk it could happen to almost any of us.

It's weird, but in a way, I could see having the matches in your pocket after that night, finding them when you put the jacket back on, and then just throwing them in an old box of junk. However, the motivation for doing that is something that I would be weirded out by, too, if I were Ron because, yeah, it seems like something someone would do only if they were sexually attracted to you and wanted some sort of stalker momento. Weird shit.
I get that Ron is allergic to feelings but if the gift had been a box of cigars or some calorie-loaded treats, Ron would've loved it & most likely started stuffing his face on the air.
It would be a weird gift, if the story Fez told was true. Since it's a lie the weirdness kind of goes away. It was just an attempt at faking love.
