    This is the best video I've found on youtube because it really explains how a mechanical watch measures time. Thank you so much!

    Boy o Boy. The mark of a great teacher I think is the ability to explain complicated concepts in easily understood words and you did it. I don't what you were a professor ,but I am sure you were are a star.
    In the early 1950's my father had a store that employed four watchmakers and didn't explain it so well.my Grandfather was a watchmaker that I never met . maybe he could have explained it so well.
    Happy Holidays!

      Hey Galja, thanks man! When I'm just learning something myself, it's easier to help others because we're both trying to understand the same thing. As I master something (like computer programming), I get further and further away as my skills and knowledge increase. Anyway, we're all learning and share what we know. Kindest regards & Happy New Year! Bill

    Great video, I'm 50 years old and just now getting into watchmaking and repair. I'm learning at a slow rate. I wear glasses and was wondering what the best microscope to use for a couple hundred dollars, new or used. I'm finding it really difficult to use loops to install hands on a small watch. thankyou for all the videos. Im also trying to learn the names of all the parts in the movement.

      Loupe for glasses: (also get a strap that keeps your glasses on.)

      Hand setting tools: You need a special tool(s) for setting a watch's hands:

      I prefer the pry tools for removing hands:

    Just a note on high beat movements, the usually don't require services more frequently (contrary to our intuition on wear and tear). The reason for this is that specially formulated lubricants are used (at least for Zenith El Primero) and more recently, silicon pallet fork + escapement wheels have been used to remove the use of lubricants all together (in the escapement). From my understanding, the Seiko high beat movement has the same recommended service interval time as the regular variant.

    • @watchartsci
      @watchartsci  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Algorithm, you're right about the lubricants, and the silicon pallet fork and escapement wheel negates most magnetic interferences. The most interesting thing that I found was that the very tip top of the horological scale were not using the "standard" 4hz 28,800 vph but instead lower ones down to 16,000. That's another mystery to solve. Cheers, Bill

      Hi Bill, M Journe once said an interesting thing about frequency. From what I remember he said that clocks can have a lower frequency because they don't have to be moved around like wristwatches. I think sports watches can't have low frequencies.

    • @algorithm007ify
      @algorithm007ify 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Roman Jeremy: You are kind of right. Higher frequency does usually = higher accuracy (for the same movement) as it equates to less influence from gravitational effects. For example, the accuracy of the Zenith El Primero (Espada) was tested against an Omega Aqua Terra (8500 movement), a Jaeger-LeCoultre tourbillon, a Roger Dubuis double tourbillon, a Franck Muller tourbillon, a H. Moser Monard, Eberhard, and a 35-year-old Rolex: www.revolution.watch/there-can-only-be-one-part-2/?archive
      The Zenith came a close second to the Franck Muller tourbillon (which has another method to deal with gravitational effects). The Zenith was much more accurate than other watches in the list. Another example is the Grand Seiko High beat that is rated to a higher accuracy than the regular beat movement variant. Lastly, there is a highly accurate movement from breguet: www.hodinkee.com/articles/the-breguet-classique-chronomtrie-takes-the-top-prize-at-the-2014-grand-prix-dhorlogerie-de-geneve-plus-full-list-of-winners that beats at 10Hz rate with a -1/+3 seconds daily deviation (which is pretty good for a breguet hand finished manual movement). and can probably be regulated to an even high accuracy.

    What keeps the second hand from moving when setting the time? I assume somehow the gears disengage when the crown is pulled to the time setting position

    • @watchartsci
      @watchartsci  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Adventures With Time! Some watches have what's called 'hacking' or 'seconds stop.' When the stem is pulled out all the way by the crown for setting the time a lever interrupts the balance wheel-it curls around the balance like those brakes on stage coaches you may have seen in cowboy movies. Patek Philippe's CEO was told by his engineers that such a system is not good for the movement, and so Patek's no longer have hacking. Here's a great video on how it works: th-cam.com/video/c84q1iJH3JY/w-d-xo.html Kindest regards, Bill

    • @adventureswithtime
      @adventureswithtime 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      WatchArtSci yes, I understand how the second hand is stopped. But doesn’t the gear that drives the second hand connect to the gear that drives the minute hand such that when the minute hand gear moves to set the time it would move the second hand gear?

    • @watchartsci
      @watchartsci  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi AWT, did you look at the video link I provided? It shows exactly how it works. Pulling out the stem all the way, it kicks in the seconds stop. Check it out, Bill

    Hello, in one of your videos you mentioned Vulcain brand. I did some research on it, and I am interested in buying the "Cricket" v10 movement watch from them. But I also found a good deal on a vintage peace in 14c gold (not plated) - caliber 120 I belive. Now what would you recommend between these two watches, or would you go with an different brand? Money wise I would keep it around +/-$3500 or less. Just curious what you got to say regarding the two movements. If you would like to take a look at my limited and not so intriguing "colection" let me know.
    Thanx for the videos, they are refreshing.

    • @watchartsci
      @watchartsci  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi 1589Chicago, I've always had a thing about Vulcain. Always wanted one because they had all in-house movements and the Cricket had an alarm. The 14k gold leaves a bit to be desired since most today are 18k, and I don't know exactly how a 14k would look. (Would the gold look a bit 'washed out?') Here's one in steel that looks like a good buy--got a Cricket V-11 movement: www.chrono24.com/vulcain/50s-presidents--id7430147.htm Good luck and let us know what you decide. Kindest regards, Bill

      hello, I went with the - newer Vulcain 100153.288L Wore it first time today. great watch, I am really happy with it. It has v10 movement as date was not something I was particularly looking for in this watch. Thanks for our help! how do I submit pictures for you to review my collection? Feel free to pm me.

      Congratulations 1589Chicago! That pusher at 2 o'clock gives the watch a distinguished sophistication. Here's a short video on how to prepare your watch photographs. Best to set the watches to 10:10 and use a plain background for your pictures. (Setting the watch to 10:10 usually puts the hands out of the way of features on your watch.) Send them to williebegoode@att.net and use the Subject Line "Collection Review." I look forward to seeing your collection, especially that beautiful new Vulcain!! Kindest regards, Bill
