In the books, Holmes was somewhat familiar with popular literature and novels( Both fiction from the likes of Edgar Allen Poe, as well as non-fiction such as Darwin's Origin of Species ) but on this show, it's more likely that he was forced to go through them in his school days and had these facts lodged in memory.
