This is for sure Grimes' most accessible album. Her earlier work was a lot more ethereal and less grounded in pop, and then her work after this delve further into hyperpop with some elements of nu-metal
Grimes produces and engineers all her own stuff and learned how to play the drums, guitar, keys, ukulele and violin just for this album (so yes, that's her playing on the record!!). She's always been a bit crazy and "left of field" as a person, as you put it, but the dedication she has for her craft is insane, she's a pure fountain of creativity and I find her talent and dedication still so sorely underrated despite her growth in popularity after this album. It's a shame a relationship that lasted for virtually a minute is gonna be her legacy to the general public when her art is so euphoric and distinct and cool 😅 If you're interested to continue further, her back catalogue is definitely way more experimental and less accessible than Art Angels, but the most accessible album before this is probably "Visions" (Her best, imo!). Visions is more purely electronic/dance inspired, but in a very ambient and trance-y, European way. The album after Art Angels, Miss Anthropocene, is also more straight up electronic than Art Angels but more poppy and less ambient in comparison to her older stuff. One thing that I really adore about Grimes' art is that in taking inspiration from the cultural sounds of many countries and their genres of music, she kind of creates a streamlined, universal folk-y and ethereal sound that anyone from any part of the world could listen to and appreciate on a deeper level. Much of her art reflects her interest in Cyberpunk aesthetics and future tech as well and I believe the inspiration of more ambient, natural sounds and music and the combo of that with her electronic production styles and experimental takes on pop really executes the vision of her interests well. Cool stuff!
Grimes has definitely influenced where music is about to go we are already seeing it in artists like ashnikko and Melanie Martinez I mean the intro to evil on Melanie’s album is very art angels and I’m so here for it.

This song was actually not supposed to be on the album (it's only on the digital version), but the demo was such a fan favourite that she rerecorded it as a bonus track. Although I love the album version, I think the demo version is still far superior. It's in a different key and sounds a lot more mellow and dreamy. It's genuinely one of my favourite pop songs of all time.
