In Drishti IAS Current News Bulletin, Atifa Qazi brings to you a summary of news events that happened last week. Recently, Trinamool Congress MP, Mahua Moitra, has been accused of accepting gifts and subsequently raising questions in Parliament. She is alleged to have posed these questions at the behest of a prominent industrial group from Mumbai. Given the gravity of the accusations, the matter has been referred to the Ethics Committee of the Lok Sabha for investigation. In addition, the Supreme Court has made a significant observation about manual scavenging. The court remarked that if a large section of society is compelled to work in sewers for a livelihood, and even a decade after it was declared illegal, people continue to perish within them, then the rights of the citizens stand violated. The ideals of brotherhood, equality, and respect become mere illusions.
In another section, we will discuss a recent study which found that forest loss may be three times greater than previously estimated. This could be attributed to rubber production in Southeast Asia. Researchers believe that the escalating global demand for rubber is intensifying the strain on natural forests. Furthermore, to mitigate dust pollution in Delhi, 'dust suppressants' will be employed. According to Union Environment Minister Gopal Rai, a 'Dust Suppressant Powder' will be blended with water and sprinkled on roads to deter dust accumulation for an extended period.
