    My Fatherinlaw had a dodge with 318. Back when #2 was still 35¢ a gallon & gasoline got to be 3-4 X that much he came up with a idea. Run truck to near or empty tank. Put 5 gallon of gasoline in tank then fill up with #2 fuel oil. He'd do three tanks this way then fourth one he'd fill alway with gasoline. Did this a long time. Lost little power but not much, was geared quite low to begin with. Worked a forty hour job n milked average of 36-42 holsteins plus replacement heifers pretty much alone except during hay season. Start little hard on 20° days but always amazed me. Body finally rusted off around 200k .
    Tires, brakes, alternator normal tune up parts & them ballast resistor's they used in coil circuit . Bout all he did to it.
    Every week hauled a ton of feed 20 some miles home for those years. Can't remember the year, before catalytic converter's though, or he removed it.

    • @dalegriggs5392
      @dalegriggs5392 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Actually Brian, not only could you build a CJ-5 from JC Whitney parts but a true Willys
      Mutt Jeep of WW - 2 Vintage. That was my initial objective in the late 1950s. That iconic Jeep was my dream. I never accomplished it because I was poor and collecting returnable pop bottles, scrap iron, and store coupons never produced the cash for the complete construction of the Willys vehicle although I did buy many parts including the four cylinder engine, I did however, acquire a 1943 Jeepster which was a small truck version of the Mutt Jeep but with a much longer wheel base. I drove it for several years . Considering that short wheel base on the Willys WW-2 Jeep it was later considered by the powers that be to have too short a wheel base to be safe so the government banned the licensing for road travel. I did come across one in the late eighties that a local mechanic shop use for various tasks such as snow removal with a blade mounted on the front but the guy wouldn’t sell it.
      In Vietnam I had the extreme privilege of being assigned as a Jeep driver for our Lieutenant. It was my delight to drive that Jeep though it was actually made by the Ford motor company. Vietnam and it’s rough, dirty environment was especially hard on vehicles. At one point the transfer case locked up on my Jeep. I was faced with no Jeep, being on foot and begging for a ride. That night myself and one other mechanic snuck into the motor pool and removed the transfer case from the company commanders Jeep and put in mine. We took my destroyed transfer case and put it in his Jeep. The end result was the company commander was walking and I was riding high! Lol

      Similar story to how my buddy in nam got a jeep by trading hooch to the navy guys to turn a crank so they could get one going to use.

    • @dalegriggs5392
      @dalegriggs5392 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      bcbloc02 Brian, jeeps were a dime a dozen in Vietnam. The US shipped so many over there every company motor pool had seven or eight when the TOE designated just two or at most three. My Jeep was rather old in comparison to some so my canvas seat pads and canvas top was ragged. My lieutenant had a meeting with some officials near the loading docks on the Saigon river just downstream from the city. While I was waiting for him to come back I spied a loading dock filled with an incoming shipment of Ford jeeps,( really designated as 1/4 ton trucks) I pulled down there as no one was around and totally outfitted my vehicle with everything I could pull off the new ones. New seats, new canvas top, Jerry cans, utility tools like axes and hammers and shovels that affix to brackets on the side and even a tactical radio complete with whip antenna. My lieutenant finally came out from his meeting and we were fifty klicks up the road before he noticed the upgrade! He was very pleased! Lol

    Brian: I have had good luck freeing up lifters by draining the oil then refilling the motor with half K-1 and new motor oil. Just start it and let it run at idle until the motor warms up. Drain the mix out. I have have done this for years. I have a 1952 Chevy pickup and the owners manual tells you to do this every other oil change. LOL Oils have gotten better in the last 60 years.

    Worked for a company years ago that had a 1983 or 1984 Dodge van with a 318. It had over 300,000 miles and the engine had never been touched. They had an excellent maintenance program which I think extended it's life. We sent that little van all over the US running Hot Shot shipments and it never failed except for the ballast resistor which is cheap and simple to change out so we just kept a couple in the glove compartment.

    ,,, don't look for a big change when u do the pump diaphragm, maybe some linkage adjustment . It is working . To put it in chronological perspective, the big block Chevy appeared in production 1965, and as the Mystery Engine from a year or two earlier, but only if you had the connections of say a Smokey Yunick or Junior Johnson .

    It's no doubt the Carb needs a kit but have you considered dumping a can of GM Top Engine cleaner down the carburetor or even fun some water down it to clean up any carbon the valves and intake. 318's were kind of famous for weak noisy lifters and carbon buildup on the valves. If I remember right back in the day Mopar sold a top end lubricant/cleaner that smelled ever so much like Marvel's Mystery Oil and a top end engine cleaner that said it also could be used to wash an engine with that smelled like Engine Gunk. I tried a couple of cans of there spray top engine cleaner and found the GM Top Engine Cleaner you either poured (dribbled) into the carb or sucked into the engine like SeaFoam worked better after all if it could clean the carbon out of Cadillac engines it should have no problem with a 318 carbon.

    • @kevinrager957

      You’ve been working diesels too long, love your channel but gassers are fickle beyond belief change the oil, coolant and every other fluid, flush the carb cleaner/starter and flush any gas. It’ s your best best before a basic rebuild. Check that kinked radiator hose too, could hold a chuck from sitting. Think about the changes in gas and ethanol over the years.

    • @truracer20
      @truracer20 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@kevinrager957 Nothing you listed besides carb is any different from a diesel. And a cab that's been sitting for 23 years is no more fickle than an injection pump that sits for 23 years, I'll wager that for both to sit in the same conditions for 23 years the carb would be the quickest, easiest, and cheapest to fix.
