    I took antipsychotics for 10 years, and lost my personality, motivation, and gained 200lb. When I was switched to other meds, my clarity came back, my zest for life returned, I realized that I hadn't lost my intelligence. I'm sad to say these drugs stole 10 years of my life and cost me a marriage and the respect of my child (who would respect the human equivalent of a slug?)

      Depot preparation? You go to your local health station with the syringe and they inject you. The prep work for that is mostly 30 min when you buy it at your pharmacy. Drug interractions?, the pharmacist that gave you the syringe would have told you if any of your current medication does not work in combination with abilify.@@drannamd

    Someone working for my state gave me this and I was on it for a year of misery. I was given it for depression because I was out of work in my 20s. The state made me sign up with the drug maker to get it for free because I was poor. After I took it for depression I was told it was an antipsychotic drug, before then I was lied to and told it was developed for that but it was suited for depression and anxiety. I was unable to think and began to lose cognitive functions. People started to call me crazy and I began living on the streets. Worst drug in the world. I live in Oregon fyi.

      Dave: Sorry to hear, that's terrible, but transferring your situation to "not being white" isn't fair. Poor is a serious problem even if you want to succeed, and black is even harder, but it is possible. At least half the country is NOT racist, probably more like 75%. It does take a LOT of motivation, and mental issues (even just day to day pressure) can make that seem insurmountable for many.

      @@Mumbo_Jumbo_Kiwi.1 Would say about 4 years. I have always been an proponent for injections. She did relapse a couple of months ago. As per usual in these cases, she instead went with tablets. Took them, and she noticed she would suffice with only half a tablet per day. Couple weeks later and even that tablet was halved. Before going into mania and psychosis, the tablet was 1/8 of the perscribed amount. After that, in the psychiatric ward for about an month.
      When it comes to bipolarism and schizophrenia, this constant "i am fine now, I will no longer use medicine" mentality is the problem.
      Injections solves this issue. You will get the dose as an over time releasing dose, heard that the effect might weaken during the last days before the new injection, but that is what the tablets are for.
      I am somewhat tired of this, cleaning up completely trashed appartments. Either get back the mental hospitals of old, or have the medicine injections court ordered.

Everyone is different and what works for one mentally ill patient may not work for the other. And it takes a lot of self awareness, too.

    Psychiatry forces me to take it. I've lost all creative ability, lust for life and am constantly drawn to porn, cigarettes and sugar. I don't think it attacks the impulse control center but cuts off dopamine supply to the frontal cortex, making the craving for it augment. You produce dopamine a lot when you gamble or have sex so that could explain. Studies have not proven yet that dopamine excess in the brain is the cause of psychoses but since anti-psychotics manage to sedate someone without putting them to sleep it is a very convenient theory for psychiatry to present as fact.

    • @chapstic593
      @chapstic593 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      yes dopamine in excess is the reason we have anti psycotic medication. The problem with the most effictive drugs is that it blocks too much dopamine causing depression. abilify exists to combat apathy. you have no one to blame but yourself when you bitch to the doctor about mild lazyness confused with life altering apathy.

    psychiatrists treat the symptoms of trauma and not the cause, this is the fundamental problem. Why do they do this? Because that is what they have been trained to do. Why? Because by treating the symptoms the cause never goes away, so the symptoms keep returning, therefore the symptoms need to be treated FOREVER, which brings in huge amounts of revenue for the drug companies and the doctors. If they prioritised treatment of the cause, in many cases the symptoms would go away, thus they would not need treating and drug company shareholders would suffer

    I must say that these problems are probably caused by using Ability at the doses suggested for problems other than depression adjunct therapy. I used Ability at a very low dose, 2 - 4 mg., and it helped my antidepressant work in stopping my incessant ruminating and obsessive thinking. That's probably where it's safest. It's prescribed at higher doses for psychosis and other problems, and I assume that's when it has these disastrous side effects.
    I have to say that, once my obsessive thinking stopped with the low dose adjunct therapy Abilify, I was able to stop taking the medicine, and the thinking patterns never emerged again.
    I would suggest ONLY prescribing Abilify as a low dose adjunct therapy to antidepressants.

      Fluoxetine increases levels of abilify in the system. This is actually a known drug drug interaction…fluoxetine reduces the enzymes that break down abilify. so doses of abilify generally have to be reduced when in combination.

    I was prescribed Abilify for my anxiety disorder. I stopped taking in the first 2 months because it made me worse than I already did. I'm glad I stopped taking it. The fact that they list the side effects on the commercial as ironically mellow music plays didn't help matters much either.

      Me too! I took it around 2006... My shrink insisted that I wasn't BP (which I am) but gave me this crap anyway. It was the worst experience of my life... I was so afraid and anxiety ridden. When I would smoke pot (and pot is the best thing I've ever used for mental illness) I literally could only take one hit as it made the anxiety and strange thoughts (kind of indescribable) so so much worse. It was a nightmare and I was so much better after I finally decided to stop taking it.

It was a full chemical lobotomy. Fortunately I was still slowly able to figure out what was happening (everything in my head was slow) and within a couple days of being off it "I" came back.

This was most likely due preexisting ADHD & OCD that was exacerbated by having a child on my own (i was married to a man who was in Afghanistan when the child was born). Prozac saved my damn life. I'm grateful these drugs exist.
      Drug-induced mania is not exclusive to ablify (or even psychiatric drugs) and the presenter is being dishonest by not stating that. If you have an underlying mood disorder, you cannot take antidepressants or antipsychotics without a mood stabilizer. Psychiatric pharmaceuticals are a tricky subject. They offer an imperfect solution to problems. It seems like this is the way to practice psychiatric medicine. A psychiatrist tries prescribing a patient a drug. If the patient doesn't have too many completely screwed up life crippling "side effects" or can't afford a better similar drug, that's the patient's life now: taking that drug.
    Psychiatry is now chemically doing what it seems like they used to do back in the day with "brain surgery." Poke a hole in the skull, stab into a part of the brain, and hope for the best. There is too much push for treating problems with pills and seems like it often causes more problems than it fixes. There doesn't seem to be enough of a push on fixing the underlying problem. Doctors are too busy to go through the process of finding out what is messed up inside someone's head and just gives them a pill that will slow their mental faculties down to make them able to behave better (in some cases) while it causes their body to slowly rot from the inside out.

      Really did you really had actually more impulse control problems while being on it?. Vs off Thats the thing i ask my myself because i have had a tendency to buy stuff i already had before or stuff in fact i really didnt need. Did you had some kind of similar symptoms?. Where you could not always resist those impulses. I decided some several days ago to keep getting my seroquel and quit my abilify. By quitting i mean not 100% cold turkey that can be dangerous. As i have experienced it from last time some 3 years ago i did quit both my abilify and seroquel. I was almost ending up getting assault charges against me. That was the reason why i was forced to go back on it. But this time its half cold turkey which means i keep my seroquel because i know that even though it being anti psychotic med that its side affects is not the same as abilify. Plus it dont got addictive potientiel the same way as abilify have. For the majority of people who are prescribed it. But this is just me why i think abilify makes some people actually more impulsive is because it in fact blocks dopamine in the brain as i have read some studies articles about it. Not because i trust everything that stands on the internet but its just my theory

      I'm starting on this soon as they low dose, we have tried a ton of different medication and very little has actually worked.
      There is way too much brain trauma and you can't go back and fix trauma
      I hear great things about neuro feedback, it's really helped a friend of mine who have brain trauma from many car accidents
      Unfortunately I'm 42 and 40 years previously was almost nothing but suffering
      When you have trauma at my level, Western medicine is a scam, although I will say that gabapentin and Lamotrigine have proven very important
      I will be sure to report anything different that feels off to my psych nurse

    My girlfriend started taking this medication. She is defiantly experiencing this "restlessness". She can't sit still for long, has to constantly multi-task, barely notices when other people are in the room, hates it when people touch her and just flips through her phone for hours. As the day goes on it only gets worse for her as she'll just curl up in a ball and shift crossing her legs ever few mins. I'm at my wits end with this. I understand there is a process to taking medication, but it's as if she has had a total personalty/persona change and it is driving me nuts. I've tried speaking to her, but its as if it goes in one ear and out the other. Her doctor want's her to just keep taking the medication as he believes these "side-effect" will subside with time, but I don't think they will and she'll just cope with them rather than over-come them. The big problem is that she'll swear that it's working and that she doesn't feel anxious or depressed, but the reality is she is in a constant state of "inner restlessness", which is basically her body telling her "hey go and do things and don't stop because if you do you'll go nuts", this is certainly the cure of anxiety/depression? Just put the body in a perpetual state of fight and that will beat the anxiety/depression away.

    As a pharmacist, yes Abilify can cause impulse control issues in patients. However, I will take a stand that it is unethical to report on a side effect of a drug without giving context regarding how common it is. It is a rare side effect, which in medical terms means less than 0.1%, or 1 in 1000 people, will get it. According to the FDA, who reported on this in July 2016, says that since it was released in 2002, less than 200 people have been reported to have this side effect. While the true number of people who have this side effect are likely to be a bit higher, this does show that it is still pretty rare.
    Do not get me wrong, I am not saying that stuff like this is not an issue, and any drug which affects the brain will potentially have serious consequences whether you like it or not. However, we cannot disregard this drug, which has helped much more people than have been affected by this side effect. This only indicates that more doctors may need to be aware of the potential side effects of these meds, the patient needs to be monitored by their friends, family and medical team and higher risk patients should be under the supervision of a psychologist or psychiatrist.

    • @theMJL
      @theMJL 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think its way more important that people understand theyre taking such a huge gamble. A gamble they may not be entirely aware of, especially when it can ruin or end your life. For some, 1-1000 is a gamble not worth taking.
      I dont see how this could possibly be viewed as unethical. Reporting on side effects, that affect people to this degree and in cases of other medications with more severe side-effects like, suicide or death, is a great service to the people. The difference of being told 0.1% and 200/200 000 can seem substantially different. Those are 200 people, your Aunt, my Mom, that are paying for a product and are having such adverse affects from that product that it is ruining their lives.

    • @MJSROX
      @MJSROX 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I never said that it is unethical for people to not know their drug’s side effects. What I said was that it is unethical for people to not tell patients how rare a side effect is when they talk about it. Additionally, all drugs such as Abilify that have an effect on the brain will have massive side effects, but if we don’t have them, there will be much larger consequences.
      For example, this drug is used in type 1 bipolar disorder, which has a major characteristic of mania and poor impulse control. So by not taking the medication, they will have these issues, but in LESS THAN 1 in 1000 cases, they will also have poor impulse control. If it were my parent, sibling or child, I would put them on it in a heartbeat if it was prescribed.
      Lastly, there is a very common drug which can cause toxic epidermal necrolysis (a severe and life threatening skin disorder), neutropenia (low neutrophils which are a white blood cell leading to much greater risk of infection and sepsis and potentially death) and liver failure and all are the same less than 1 in 1000 risk. This drug is paracetamol or acetaminophen in the US. If you want to not take a gamble like that, then no Panadol for you or your family. If you want to debate medicines at least develop some context on them and their side effects.

    • @theMJL
      @theMJL 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I mistook "unethical to report" as in this videos "report", not in the sense of doctors or practitioners reporting side effects to patients. You go on to justify that statement in the context I mistook it for as well, unless Im still misunderstand you. Youre wording isnt exactly clear.

    Wikipedia writes about the drug, with sources: "Information is of limited quality, incomplete, and problematic to apply.
    Long-term data is few and quality of evidence is all low or very low.
    Aripiprazole also has important side effects." Apparently all the clinical trials went rather poorly. So it just barely left the category of "Not proven to work".
