How many hairs can one watch contain?!

- Today we have another drawer warrior on the bench, a late 1940's triple calendar moon phase from the not very well known brand Pierce. Join me for a full service of this old watch, with a running count of hairs found in the movement and a couple of very strange surprises!
As always we'll have a couple of detours which are only randomly connected to watchmaking, including a discussion of Neymar junior :)

A million thanks from someone who is totally inept at any kind of mechanics for your crystal clear explanations of each part's function. Your humour, eloquence and clarity of expression combine to make your videos a total joy to watch (!).
Thanks so much, Thomas 😊
Made me smile to hear the children in the background. Reminds me of mine when they were small.
I love these little springs: So many hours spent on four feet on the floor searching them or searching in that parts which spring could be adapted to replace the lost one.😬
Sounds all too familiar!😂
@@havana4648 I knew this one would come! It is just a literal translation of a German saying "auf allen Vieren (or vier Füssen)", more or less. Maybe " on all fours" would have been better, but I don't really know if that is English.
@@havana4648 I knew😁
I love how kind you are to your children and family
Thanks, that's very nice of you :)
Congratulations on bringing back another vintage beauty back to its glory
Nice set of working instruments
Great attention to details
Best Wishes Always
Regards from India
👌👌👍👍💐💐🇮🇳 🇮🇳
I love those triple calendar watches with moon phase, thanks for saving this one.
That day date moonphase module looks like a really simple and effective solution to add to the basic movement. I hope the great minds that created this weren't lost to the watch world when the company closed. Mind you they could have set up a barber shop. Thanks for another educational and funny vid Stian.
Thanks, Howard :)
To my eye, a rather nice looking watch. I particularly like the way they did the date complication. Another awesome video!!!
I find I am going back and watching many of your videos again. They are just as interesting the second time!
Wow, thank you!
A beautiful watch in its day, and it still is beautiful by today's standard. "Thanks" for sharing, stay and safe.
I like this watch. I think that you made the servicing look easier than it really is. There are a lot of interacting parts. Interesting history too. I was thinking that the hairs were arm hairs pulled in through the winding stem, I must shave my arm before I wear my watch in future.😁
😂
A very enjoyable and informative video, with excellent photography. It's great to see how 'oddball' watches such as this one work as you take them apart and then re-assemble them.
I really like the single spring for two correctors in the competitions. I think it was a very elegant conservation on materials and space. The brand has a very nice simple design.
Hello Stian, nice to see your work again =)
Another amazing and informative restoration and service, with a little comedy act! Love your work.
Nice restoration . I find hairs in all kinds of places too. Can’t believe I’ve not seen your channel before. I’ve been doing this on TH-cam for 5 years and I thought I knew everybody!
Subscribed.
Thanks for the sub, Mike! There are new watch channels being started every day, or so it seems :) I've been following you for a long time as I'm also a Seiko enthusiast and really enjoy your videos. Good to see you're back in the saddle, how is the health scare coming along?
Stian
@@VintageWatchServices humbled you know me and my little channel !
Health is pretty good. Better on that on Wednesday I got the all clear of cancer!! Seems removal of the prostate all the cancer was contained. Still a chance a few cells are left but I’m taking it as a big win!
Makes my recovery easier knowing this. Life goes on!
@@MyRetroWatches That's really good to hear. I hope all goes well with no rebounds and that we can enjoy your videos for a long time to come :)
@@VintageWatchServices thanks. Only way is up. Be sure to have regular health checks my friend especially prostate if you are 45+ silent killer. Think I am going to enjoy your channel!
So relaxing to watch you work, thank you for doing this.
Thanks for another video, this is indeed a good looking watch! I must say that I particularly look forward to the sound effects you use when dropping case parts into your Elma 9 to 1.
“Drawer Warrior”, I love that term. First time hearing it. 👍
Absolutely love the interruptions by "Rascals". Brings the realities of life to the videos!
This was a fascinating video, Stian, especially how you explained the relationships between the wheels in the triple complication. The engineering ingenuity in finding the simplest ways to achieve complex functions is remarkable. It is one of the fundamental qualities of vintage watchmaking. Btw, do you deduct from your assistant's wages the price of the pilfered ice cream sandwiches?
Thanks Bullnose! You're spot on that finding the simplest solution to complex problems is the essence of good watchmaking.
And yes, it's basically a zero sum game. The scarcely paid child labor I encourage is balanced by them buying stuff with their earned money that I would otherwise have given them for free 😁
ahh the caliber HA1R135T, more common than you would believe! another great video Stian, always enjoy both the service, and the history of the piece in your videos
😂 That's exactly the caliber!
Triple calendar moonphase is one of the coolest complication for me, clearly underapreciated
Absolutely magnificent closeups. In watch videography, one closeup is worth a thousand long shots.
Many thanks!
My favorite part of all your videos is when fire up the balance wheel after cleaning... so satisfying.
Thank you for another highly entertaining video, which was nice to watch, as was the watch itself.
Better than any TV - program, for sure !
The dad jokes get me every time…😂
Great Restoration of a lovely vintage model which is brought back to it's age
Long but nice vlog loved every passing minute
Best Wishes Always
💐💐💐👍👍👍👌👌👌
Many thanks!
Beautiful watch, and as always, deserving of your fine work.
Lovely job resulting in an impressive watch, it is a pleasure watching you work. Thank you.
Awsome watch ! And thanks for the jokes on the side, has me laughing 😂😂😂😂
😁👍
This is the exact kind of watch I really would love to add to my collection. They are such beautiful watches. Great video!!
Another great video Stian, I love the history lesson and learning about lesser known marques
Wow, I would be extremely happy to win such a beauty, What a beautiful restoration. Congratulations
Wow... what a great looking watch...and another fabulous restoration. Crazy that so much hair/debris has penetrated the watch.. But maybe as you suggested., the hands may not be original and whoever was there before, wasn't careful of leaving stuff behind. Love the piece..and your work. Kudos
It was probably owned by a mascot or a very hairy dude like me.
Such a lovely looking watch and a nice piece of history.
Thanks for letting it shine Stian👍
I love the concept of the monthday around the edge of the dial, and I wish more watches used this style instead of a little square window with a number in it.
The brand that's still doing it in the modern times is Oris with their Big Crown lineup. Otherwise there're the watches that use the Valjoux 7751 movement. Really great stuff.
A truly beautiful piece.
I shall be looking out for one of these.
I was left this watch by my grandfather when he passed and it takes pride of place in my collection. Wish I knew of someone I could trust to service and clean it.
THANK YOU; I finally saw the technique to remove the Wheel that connects to the axis of the central seconds hand. Many times I damaged not only the wheel but also its axis.....!!!!!!
Glad it helped!
@@VintageWatchServicesThank you very much for your timely and fraternal response.
Absolutely beautiful result ! I have never heard of this manufacturer before; fleabay here I come....
Love seeing the spotlight shine onto wonderful and seldom seen pieces such as this gem. Thank you❤
My pleasure!
Great video. I enjoyed watching. Always learn something. Thank you
I'm happy to have seen this video. I didn't feel that I could handle servicing a triple calendar moon phase movement, but now I think I can tackle one. Chronographs, not yet...
Great humor as always. Great way to spend some time relaxing..
Always a pleasure to look at your videos. Thank you
Love watching your videos!! Even more, I love the fact that you take time for little "rascals ".
Thank you! 😊
Love the smiling moon. Very nice dial with very little decay.
Looking for missing springs sounds like fun. Not that I wouldn't know...
What a nice dial, too bad it was hiding behind a privacy glass!
I used to lose lots of small stones but I invested in black rubber mat tiles around my cabbing and faceting machines, stress levels dropped as soon as I installed them.
😅
Another great video, thanks for sharing.
What a beautiful old watch - deserves your excellent care - and now I have to go to eBay to see how much they are!
quite affordable is the answer - first one I looked at was the WW2 RAF chronometer - I had never heard of Pierce before this video
Very nice Stian. Even if you said that is very straight forward to reassemble it , I have found so fascinating with all those complication to put together . This can be recap with your huge professionalism and experience in what you’r doing for living . Beautiful watch . Those are the one I like . Ciao
simply beautiful....well done mate.
Thank you so much 😀
I agree. The dial is very nice. Thanks again for a fabulous video. Best wishes as always.
Thanks for watching!
A good humoured all inclusive view into the your watch world , rascals and all 😁. Always look forward to the slow Mo shots of the parts into the fluid, really nice touch ...
Thanks! 😊
Wow beautiful restoration.
Great video, I very enjoy it !
Thank you very much!
Love this one with complications !! We can call it hairy movement !! 😂😂. As always very good job Stian ! Thanks for sharing ! ✨👌
Love your knowledge of where they come from. Excellent
Thanks Stian, for posting! Really like the history narrative.
Thanks for watching, Walther!
i love that watch great vidio again stian and congratulations to Frank Abate on his win well done
I have had the pleasure of a lot of travel in my 72 years and find Norway the most beautiful country that I have visited!
Thanks, Steven! It's a beautiful country for sure, but mostly for the nature. There are some nice small cities but Oslo for instance isn't really one of them. Switzerland is also very beautiful :)
That turned out so clean! Well done Sir.
watch previously worn by an orangatang
very good zoom photography, even i can see your work!... keep up the good work i enjoy watching 👍🏻
Another real beauty Stian.
I like your videos and your sense of humor very much. The result is that I got fascinated with the vintage Chronographs. That much that I ended up buying a vintage Chronograph on eBay 🙃, I hope it was a good idea as I have only very limited knowledge of watches. Thank you and greetings from Berlin.
That's cool to hear! Buying a vintage chronograph on eBay with limited knowledge of watches can be somewhat risky, but I hope it works out well for you :)
I enjoy watching you work on the watches so much: I have started a watch collection and I am in the prosses of ordering a time gaffer along with some other watch tools...
That's very cool to hear, Richard :)
I enjoy watching the master at work 👍🏻
Good video man, as always. Informative, interesting and awesome to enjoy the interaction with the rascals 🤣
Hey, one moment, thought you had something special for me 🤨
😁 Keep banging these clips out 👍
Thank you Stian for the video. Just love triple date and date pointer watches. And a moon phase on top of it. Wow what a great looking watch. And very informative and detailed video. Thank you again.
My pleasure!
Around the 38 min mark it looks as if there are straight scratch on the wheels in proximity of each other when you were adjusting them. Also I believe around the 7 min mark they weee also visible. Just a thought.
Now that is a beautiful watch! Great video also
Thank you kindly!
Nice of you that you didn't edit your kids out! I immensely enjoy watching you work.
Amazing work, thanks for sharing your knowledge and techniques
Thank you! Cheers!
Love what your doing
Thanks, Lee!
As always entertaining and educational, love your videos Stian! 😊 Har nettopp begynt høstferien og da er det deilig å slappe av med en nerdevideo, som kona kaller det. Gir inspirasjon til å starte opp igjen på et par prosjekter som har gått litt i stå. 🙏🏻🤩
Nerdevideo stemmer nok, det! 😂
Beautiful dial
Another masterful video!, beautiful watch!. Well done Stian. Adrian
Thanks, Adrian :)
Another great video beginning to end Stian.
I enjoy your videos a lot! Thank you! I love watches from the 1920s to the end of the 1960s and this one is fantastic! OY! Those dang dial screws!!!!!
Great looking watch, thank you again for sharing.
Thanks for watching, Ben!
Excellent work, thank you for sharing
Great video. I had a 1940's pierce single pusher chronograph. I wish I still had it... Great watch
Nice work. Interesting watch
Another excellent and hairy video Stian and coping with all those hairs. Maybe the last watch repairer had just had a haircut. I haven't heard of Pierce brand before.
I have a Movado watch from 1955 with triple calendar but no moonphase. I just stare up at the sky hoping to see the moon's state without bird poop dropping in my eye
You could ask your kids to search for watch screws that you've inadvertently dropped on the carpet and reward them with 2 kroner for each screw they find.
😂👍
Thanks for the stream Stian. Love your story about Pierce. I almost bough one similar couple of months ago but didn't get the price right. Refurbished dial as well.
Cousins have now 10ml Fixdrop with integrated basket for 25 quid
Wow, good to hear Fixodrop and the bottle is getting a bit more reasonable then 👍
Beautiful movement.
Congrats Frank, enjoy!
Stian, we all have suasage fingers, not all are watchmakers... But we all have hairs, at least young!!! Cheers.
gorgeous!!!
Hi Stian great video as usual mate, i'm enjoying the Felsa movements i got from ebay, that Pierce is a lovely watch again, i look on ebay and other places for watches with movements i haven't serviced/fixed to get better i hope, cheers for another excellent video Stian. Dave 🇬🇧
Thanks, Dave! Felsa made some really nice movements back in the day 👍
Nice save
The watch is beautiful.Keep up like that.
Excellent job.
Beautifull watch.
georgeous watch great skill and you probably have the patience of two jobs thank you.
SR U THE BEST WATCH REPAIR
What a great watch! Very interesting to see the operation of the complications.
Fascinating backstory. Shame, the brand has been so debased now... but that's how business goes sometimes.
Super video, thanks.
It's sad indeed... but the vintage Pierce pieces can still be celebrated 👍
Very Cool!
You work on some really pretty timepieces...
Still amazing how such small precision parts were made so long ago and how many places were able to do it ! 😮👍🏻
Now we know why Big Foot went into hiding.... he failed as a watchmaker.
😂
That is one really nice watch I find it very interesting how it looks kinda different from what I have seen you fix
That's a really nice vintage watch. Looks like it was keeping pretty darn good time too. I wonder if that's one of the earlier watches to use that form of date display around the outside with the quarter moon looking indicator on a hand. I've seen it on some more modern high end watches certainly.
Thanks for watching! The crescent tip is a pretty common way of displaying the date in triple calendar watches, simply to give enough space for the weekday and month. And it looks very cool on watches without the triple calendar also :)
