      This is very true. I just wished I had good dialogues to describe my situation with others and more vocabulary words to make it more professional. Journaling has helped with my suicidal thoughts but I stopped because of my poor writing. I've been miserable since not writing. I need to develop better grammar.

      really,i have anxiety and my therapist suggest me to do journaling. i get rid of all my social media and just live with book and pen. this is really amazing. i can feel the happiness around me

      This has never been suggested by any of my doctors and I have Persistent Depressive Disorder for nearly 40 years.

      @@davidwhitcher1708 That is unfortunate. Sorry to hear that. Doctors (including Psychiatrists) seem to go directly to medication as a solution which often can only be of limited effect. Therapists and counselors are so widely ranged that no two people end up with the same treatment options.
      I've also started recently MindBloom's therapy which has a lot of journalling involved as well. It's been incredibly helpful.

    THANK YOU for briefly mentioning the use of medication. I found that there can be a huge (like really huge) stigma around using antidepressants and similar medication in the self-growth and spiritual community. It took me years to accept that in order to be in a place where I'm actually be able to use tools like journaling, yoga, meditation and such to cope with my chronic depression and generalized anxiety disorder, I needed some extra help at the moment from medications to get me started.
    It's super important to know that you're not a failure if your doctor, therapist or else suggest antidepressants. Let that be the first step on the ladder to build yourself out of that pit of depression or darkness.

    I really didnt know that journaling can help depression. But because i have been a journaler since highschool, i just wrote all my feelings down when i was depressed few years back. My journal is always like written prayers to the Lord. And i dont know why but i always make sure that my journal do not stop on dwelling on the negatives but always end my prayers in thanksgiving and grateful heart since it is a letter to God. Thank God that through my depression, i turned to my journal. And i overcome it! ❤ and also to my husband who walked me through the hard times. Thanks for sharing! I learned a lot.

      @@SundayBlues555 Did you work on your grammar and carry-on with Journal writing ✍? Your Journals are a safe place where perfection is not necessary. Although, that is something I too struggle with.

    I think it's a good idea to add entries when you are feeling well. I generally only need to ge things off my chest when I am feeling down. When I feel well, I feel guilty, because I get scared that I'm just making up depression, that I am not actually ill, so I avoid writing, or writing the good things - which I probably should. It is still helpful, however, to go back over all entries and see how you've been progressing, what has changed, what hasn't, and figuring out why.

      Also if you only use it when you feel depressed it will become associated with depression in your mind and make you feel down just looking at it.

    I've been having anxiety and depression for 3 years now. And when i'm depressed, my mind just automatically goes into "observant" mode. lol. also, i have to journal everyday otherwise my thoughts will clog up. i also can't avoid it since it's the only thing that keeps me sane and more in control. i meditate every night too while watching Rebecca Borucki's meditation videos.

    Excellent video. I am on antidepressants and have started journaling doing prompts or just doing some random drawing. I find it helps me a lot. You said “why do you choose to live?” I did this prompt and found a long list which surprised me :) thank you for being here still with us all and sharing your thoughts

    Art in any form has it's power to heal!! And journaling definelty helps gain clarity on our thoughts which in turn could help fight depression. There might be instances we might feel ashamed or disgust reading again but also see how far we have come and how strong we are now😊. Excellent video 👌

    i’m in a depression episode right now and it’s been about two months, this is definitely one of the worst or the worst one yet. i’m gonna try journaling ! i hope it works for me and i hope i keep with it

    Hey it would be great if you could make a video with an example of these points you made, it doesnt need to be personal stuff, its just hard for my chaotic brain to put things into paper from abstract.     I’ve journaled most of my life and have been trying to get my daughter to journal her thoughts as well. I love this videos so much that I shared it with her recently because it’s exactly what she needs to hear from a person going through the same things as her.     I really liked this video up until the part where you said that people should only really focus on writing in their journal when they’re happy, and not so much when they’re feeling depressed. I get what you’re saying to use your journal as like something to come back to and lift you up when you’re feeling depressed. But I think an important part of dealing with your depression is getting every thought out of your head and onto paper. I don’t think that’s wallowing in it I think it’s therapeutic to get it all out. It’s also nice to look back and read how far you’ve come from those dark places to where you are now in the future.

    Mary-Ellen also has the WRAP (wellness recovery action plan) which helps you get and stay well, and even plan for times when you do your best, but things spiral down. There is free info online!

    Thank you so much for this video Tina! Came home, kicked off my shoes and tapped on that notification. Today was actually the first time I left the house and went to a class after almost two months... depression huh? I've been taken to neuros, psychs and therapists, the psychs are all assholes lol they ask you about your problems then they use your problems to laugh in your face. I mean aren't you supposed to help me? My therapists never helped me at all. One asked way too personal questions on the first day and another never even said anything she's just sit there silently expecting me to write the mahabharat for her.

      Hi Kate! Thanks for the comment! This is a great topic and one that I'm definitely interested in as well. Hmm...for me, self-forgiveness is about holding on to things that need to be let go...so how about two lists: things that I hold onto and things that I need to let go of. Also, "what does it mean to really forgive?" Side note - here is a great website that you might find useful! You can tweak the wording of things to be more fitting for you

    I'm so glad you made this video! I know that journaling is a great step in working towards a better mindset and just a good way to cope in general, but I was hoping there was someone with guidelines or suggestions on how to structure it and what to include.
    If I could ask a more personal question, I wanted to see if you (or anyone really, I'd just appreciate some advice) have had this experience where you notice when you're going to spiral, and you try to do your best to take care of yourself and ensure that it doesn't happen, but it just hits harder than ever after putting it off? It always feels like a shook up soda bottle of 5 weeks worth of bad days hitting all at once. It seems like that's happening a lot lately to me and I feel really frustrated and lost. Lost as in, I don't know how I should be handling myself.
    The things that make me feel better are writing and just crying things out, so usually when I don't have enough time to sit down and write, I let myself cry, then take a shower and head to bed early. I do my best not to wallow, but to cry my bad emotions out so I feel less heavy. That being said, when these "I tried not to have a breakdown and now my breakdown is 5x worse" situations happen, I feel like when I notice my triggers I should just cry it out. I don't know. I can't afford medication or therapy so input would be appreciated

      Hi Eri, journaling is new to me so I can't help with that but I think it's very good that you're paying attention to things that work for you. A shower and early to bed makes sense to me. I understand not being able to afford meds or therapy. Reading is useful I think, whether it's something on the spiritual (non-dogmatic) side or even just some fiction you can enjoy. A good story can be a great, wholesome little escape! Also I recommend time in fresh air and any little healthy thing you can do for yourself without feeling obliged to join a gym, enroll in exercise classes, etc - though all that is fine to do.

      @@marthadawson8954 Hello! Thank you for the thoughtful reply, it's very kind and sweet. I've come to the conclusion that journaling just doesn't work for me-- like I said in my old comment, it just sort of exacerbates all of the negative thoughts. Writing fictional stories helps too, I've always loved writing but I stopped writing around 2011 and didn't pick it back up until recently. I've also taken up drawing, so that can be a better outlet for emotions if you're having similar issues as I did with journaling. And I've been able to afford medication, although I haven't started therapy yet. (The pandemic definitely makes that harder to accomplish). I also got a library card and found out my library works with Libby so I can check out ebooks, so yeah reading is absolutely a great way to get out of your thoughts when they're too much.

    I journal regularly, not every day though, and it has helped me in a variety of ways. But as much as I try, and I do understand the concept behind it, I have trouble creating my toolbox. I always imagine a real box with "things" inside. Maybe you could do a video about the toolbox, the way you put feelings and concepts into visuals is stunning, and maybe i can understand it then.

    I am totally a take the journey of depression here they say " the fight with depression" i totally disagree there was no fight in me but i could journey. I made like i was on a ship, i was the captain but there was rough water, i had my entertainment crew (family) my guide (God) and support staff ( cousellor, hubby) and once i stopped fighting and took the journey i could accept it better nad work towards calmer seas.

    Depression and spiraling into blues are separate things entirely. There are different types of depression. Nonetheless, you have good points for people who have the blues.

      Some individuals may refer to their depression in a rather specific way. Winston Churchill, for example, referred to his depression as a "Black dog." Naturally and literally, depression is not a canine animal. That was however, his way of referring to it. The same may be true of Tina in this video, expounding upon her "blues."

    You know what I find fascinating? It's maybe a silly thought, but I never saw someone wearing different metals/ metal colors all together. I always thought it wouldn't match, if you don't have all jewelry in silver or in gold. But I noticed a yellow gold necklace, a rose gold ring?! and silver rings. I don't know why I am thinking so hard about this topic. xD

    I’m going to try making lists of memories that make me smile and reasons why I want to live, when I first heard the second prompt of reasons to live, nothing really came to mind which is really sad I know, but then cliques started coming in like my friends and family and my future and my dreams for my future and with God and that God has a wonderfully planned life later out for me that He can’t wait to share with me and that makes me happy to think about but I also get lost in just empty thoughts and a mild depression that I get lost in temporarily and I use that to procrastinate and to wallow in more disappointment in myself and I just don’t know how to get out of it sometimes. I’m going into my junior year of high school and I don’t want this to continue and for the procrastination to start again in this way this year, please help :/

    I usually don't watch your videos, as I don't really enjoy decorative journaling. I prefer prayer and more of a plain, "boring" book journal. I did watch this video, though... Maybe I'll try these things out.
