    This gives me so many ideas! Thank you for sharing this with us. I like the large wire panels you’ve hung in place of hardware cloth in the large spaces and the way you are protecting most of the young trees, shrubs. It looks very sturdy and efficient. Lots of shade and light for the girls, protection from hawks, and smart ways you can block off areas…just perfect. Espalier training of your fruit trees was a great idea. Happy to hear you rescue chicks too.

    Wow, amazing set up and tour! We’ve recently bought a house with a chicken palace (no where near as big as chicken city) and we’re thinking of putting some dwarf fruit trees and berries in for shade and interest. This has spurred me on that is the right way to go. Now in rethinking our veggie garden set up 🤣

    • @alycealexandra
      @alycealexandra  ปีที่แล้ว +7

      great question! and one I get asked a lot. If I could change anything, I would put the berry room in the position that gets the least winter sun, and put the second veggie room in it's place. I didn't give the winter sun enough consideration, especially as the berry canes are completely dormant over winter! Other than that, nothing to change... I spent years designing and refining it before I built, and I think it paid dividends :) good luck with yours!! xx

    That is the best idea I have ever seen - usually they have the coop and run separate from the garden, and it also protects the plants too. I have many night visitors like possums and other animals foraging around at night and they eat young plants which is really annoying when you are trying to get them to grow. Also, the chicks need protection from everything too. So Wonderful.

    This is wonderful! I'm looking for a house in the country, and have been thinking about doing something like this, except the rooms (and a corridor). In each room the chickens would spend a year, followed by heavy feeding annual crops for a year, followed by less hungry annual cross the next year, until the chickens returned to feed the soil.

    great set up. In annual garden nu 2 you have sweet peas and rhubarb. Is there a problem with these plants being poisonous for chickens and how do you deal with this? Thank you

    • @alycealexandra
      @alycealexandra  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      good question!! i've found the chickens never eat things that are poisonous for them, they never eat the leaves of the tomatoes or potatoes for example. I've come to trust that over the years, but when I first got them I wouldn't even test it out with them. I think to be honest i wouldn't grow the sweet peas again, not worth the risk, but the other edibles I'll keep doing. I do monitor it daily, if i came in and they'd started munching on something i'd notice. but so far so good! x

    So, it is alright to plant immediately after the chickens are done fertilizing? I am working on a similar setup, but I thought I would need to let the manure age a few months or something. Just a wonderful garden you've made.

    • @alycealexandra
      @alycealexandra  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I've never worried about it and never had a problem! the majority of fertiliser goes on the garden beds in the form of the chicken bedding (poo + straw) so this has already had a bit of aging "in situ" if that makes sense. Thank you for your kind words! I love it :)

      very perceptive! yes they are toxic, howver I've never had an issue with the chickens eating the leaves... they seem to be very in tune with what they can eat and what they cant. I leave the plants in there for a bit so they can eat off all the remaining tomatoes, and then I pull them out :)

    • @alycealexandra

      it was a thinner wine that was rolled up, and we unrolled it accorss the top and nailed it into the frame using u nails... then got little bits of wire and used them to attach the long 'sheets' of wire together... does that make sense? its pretty flimsy wire on the top, not like the of the enclosure!
