My Mom got me to watch this with her, when VHS first became available in peoples' homes. We watched the entire thing in one go.I felt like I'd been walking down that dusty road, been beaten and starved, by the time it was over. I've never forgotten the part where the camp commander beats that man for stealing one of his prize chickens, so the women would have something good to eat. I thought he was dead.
My all time favorite mini series. Incredibly moving and engaging. Certainly the best thing Bryan Brown and Helen Morse ever did. They had tremendous chemistry, and the script almost outshone the book and when is the last time that happened? Definately deserves a new DVD edition , with restored color maybe.

In the eighties, these Masterpiece Theater classics really commanded attention and were seen by millions. I recall seeing posters for it in bus stops.
Yes Bryan Brown was fantastic...and the girl's character helped me renew my strength against crooked murderous maggots who were killing patients in a local indigent hospital....it was VERY hard.. BUT🤣 I AM STILL ALIVE ......SOME OF THEM ARE DEAD...AND I AM STILL FIGHTING THEM...NOW..NO FEAR...THIS SERIES REALLY INSPIRED ME .❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Was in Australia in late 1980's and the hatred of the Japanese - especially in Queensland was Very apparent with the older generation. And the funny thing, there were Japanese tourists everywhere.

This is based on true events of WWII when hundreds of women POWs wre put on a forced march across the Malayan Peninsula back and forth for hundreds of miles. Many died of exhaustion or starvation or illness.
l also have the vhs, l checked the listing for Helen Morse movies unfortunately this movie isn't listed. I like you hope that it will be available on dvd.

I love this book. Cried over the scene when Jean met Joe again after the war many times.

The bryan Brown mini series was the best ever. UK peeps were glued to the screen. Very hard to find and it was not commercially released.
