Sipnayan is Filipino, not Tagalog. It was a word specifically coined I think back in 1950's or later for Filipino language, same with 'dagitab', 'salungpuwit', etc. Agham though, it does exist even before 'Filipino language' became a thing, it's a Tagalog word, but so is 'siyensya'.

Partly true but let me tell you..philippines has lots of native languages in literally every place you go even adjacent cities differs like a lot..north part of it speaks tagalog and taught to be our national language long time ago but this has been changed to filipino which means including native languages. It just happened some bisaya or the middle and south part of the country speaks those loan words. But just to let you know, in terms of the language, Filipino is the standardized Tagalog language which includes the modified or borrowed words from English or, in this video's case, Spanish. The national language is officially labeled Filipino and its foundation is Tagalog. I'm not sure if you're Filipino, but if you are, you may want to have a review on this. If you're not, that serves as an fyi. :)

Most of Filipinos were influenced with many language and mostly we use those in everyday use. But we still familiar the original words. Some words used in spanish that cannot find in Tagalog can be found in Visayan Language and Dialects like Avion, espejo, sandalias etc.

I heard from my history teacher that tagalog is a word used to refer to those people living in Manila and the language is actually called Filipino. Filipino ( According to an ACT, I forgot which one XD) includes other languages in that time period like Spanish, English,Arabic etc. Our national language is also influenced by India, China, Malaysia, Indonesia,etc. If you notice from your Filipino class, there's always a lesson about borrowed words from English as we simply don't have an alternative for them. In our Filipino class ( I'm currently a 9 grader) Spanish words are always taught to us by our teachers. When we write essays in Filipino, spanish words are quite welcome and occasional English words are fine. It's normal for languages to overlap with another and it is even more so for a language to have quite a handful of alternatives for the same meaning. Hope we all learn something new everyday =)

I am an Ilocano and I struggled with Tagalog when I moved to Manila. Though Tagalog is being spoken in school before, it is still different from conversational Tagalog. That is why I understand if the girl could not answer simple terms. Also, Filipinos are now using English terms for some words like garden, TV, phone, train, mall, and a lot more. If you want to be technical, Mathematics is Sipnayan in Tagalog. Science is Agham. Blue is bughaw. Airplane is salipawpaw. God is Bathala. You have to understand that though Filipino is based on Tagalog, these are still 2 different languages. Filipino accepts the borrowed words such as Matematika, kudeta (coup d etat), hamburger, etc.

That's not "deeper". Those words were literally invented in the 1960s by the Komisyon ng Wika, to make the language "purer". They're not "real" words, that's why so few people are using them. There are no native words for things like "airplane".

Lets clear this out of the way. For those of you who needs clarification, Tagalog, like Cebuano, Ilokano, Bikolano and Ivatan, is a LANGUAGE and *NOT* a dialect. Dialects are just a variation of a language. For example: batangas tagalog, bulacan tagalog, rizal. tagalog, manila tagalog. You might think there's no difference but there are some words and even intonations that differ from each tagalog dialect. And yes, Tagalog was the Basis for Filipino (national language) hence the uncanny similarities. However, even Filipino and Tagalog (pure) have some differences. How much they differ is something that i cannot estimate.
It depends on the dialects, the Tagalogs of Batangas and Quezon is considered purer compared to those in Laguna, Cavite, Rizal and Bulacan. Quezon especially holds a much more diverse sub-dialects because of its geographical and topographical features, and also homes to several non-Tagalog Ethnic Tribes that is also influences the Tagalog spoken in different areas of the province. It has influences from Batangueno from the West, the kapampangan and Ilocano in the North, the Bicolano in the East, the Visayan Languages like Masbateno, Cebuano, Hiligaynon, Waray-Waray and others in the South, especially the Southern Bondoc Peninsula. But believe me the Tagalog Vocabulary there is so wide and deep compared to what we have in Official Filipino Language or just the Standard Tayabas Dialect based in Tayabas City.

The similarities would be, for instance, a manileño who speaks Filipino can still understand batangueño albeit vaguely, but there wouldn't be as much problem understanding each other unlike in the case of a Filipino speaker conversing with a waray or perhaps even ilokano/kapampangan speaker. For sure there are language mutations (due to influences--which can sometimes be labeled as sub-dialects or maybe sociolect in some cades) even in a generally tagalog province. And I agree that the "pure" tagalogs' vocabulary may differ vastly than the filipino's. Thanks for elaborating that!
I love Tagalog, but it’s my 2nd language. We had to learn it in school. I’m glad I didn’t grow up in PI when many Spanish loan words were being changed to English. It made it easier to learn Spanish & also Portuguese. Will be learning Italian & French next. It would’ve been great if Spanish was retained as even 3rd official language in PI. I know that my great grandfather spoke it fluently because it was his first language, although born & raised in PI. My mother also speaks it fairly well & has no problems communicating with Hispanic customers & co-workers.
I am currently studying korean language this year but I feel like it's so easy to learn spanish too since most tagalog words are the same in spanish. Truly, Filipinos have been influenced by spanish people during spanish colonization.

In this age, we don’t really use the exact translation of these words. Some of us are more comfortable using the English terms as they are. So I can say Americans have probably colonized us more significantly.

Filipino Language is widely used in the Philippines. But for the fact that the filipino language is a standardize form of tagalog and they tend to call filipino(language) as tagalog. Anyway, there are still some filipino people can't speak fluently and understand Filipino(language) especially those regions who used other languages like Cebuano, Hiligaynon, Ilokano, Bicolano, Waray, Kapampangan and Pangasinan, because they don't usually use the language and lack of education and interest in learning the language.

Matematika is like literal translation of Mathematics but the Tagalog word for Math is Sipnayan. And Agham for Sciene. As far as I know tho.
Sipnayan is Filipino, not Tagalog. It was a word specifically coined I think back in 1950's or later for Filipino language, same with 'dagitab', 'salungpuwit', etc. Agham though, it does exist even before 'Filipino language' became a thing, it's a Tagalog word, but so is 'siyensya'.

Partly true but let me tell you..philippines has lots of native languages in literally every place you go even adjacent cities differs like a lot..north part of it speaks tagalog and taught to be our national language long time ago but this has been changed to filipino which means including native languages. It just happened some bisaya or the middle and south part of the country speaks those loan words. And curriculum at present do teach native languages as per spoken in the place and i admit we really havr our own languages its just forgotten bec we dont use it often..and for tagalog..i think even bisaya feel the need to learn tagalog bec this are use to be our common language..and for tagalog speakers, please no pressure as we dont pressure you to learn every deep bisayan language..thanks to academics

But just to let you know, in terms of the language, Filipino is the standardized Tagalog language which includes the modified or borrowed words from English or, in this video's case, Spanish. The national language is officially labeled Filipino and its foundation is Tagalog. I'm not sure if you're Filipino, but if you are, you may want to have a review on this. If you're not, that serves as an fyi. :)

Most of Filipinos were influenced with many language and mostly we use those in everyday use. But we still familiar the original words.
Some words used in spanish that cannot find in Tagalog can be found in Visayan Language and Dialects like Avion, espejo, sandalias etc.

I'm filipina and I just want to share something. My math teacher said that the tagalog term for mathematics is not matimatika, instead, "SIPNAYAN". Hope you learn something hehehe
I heard from my history teacher that tagalog is a word used to refer to those people living in Manila and the language is actually called Filipino.
Filipino ( According to an ACT, I forgot which one XD) includes other languages in that time period like Spanish, English,Arabic etc. Our national language is also influenced by India, China, Malaysia, Indonesia,etc.
If you notice from your Filipino class, there's always a lesson about borrowed words from English as we simply don't have an alternative for them.
In our Filipino class ( I'm currently a 9 grader) Spanish words are always taught to us by our teachers. When we write essays in Filipino, spanish words are quite welcome and occasional English words are fine.
It's normal for languages to overlap with another and it is even more so for a language to have quite a handful of alternatives for the same meaning.

A little correction.
Filipino is a language that is heavily based on Tagalog, the language spoken by the group of people called Tagalog or something, that also incorporates other languages that existed around that time like English, Chinese, Spanish, and Malay.
For example Taglish, a mixture of Tagalog and English,can be referred to as Filipino.
However, not all languages found in the Ph can be referred to as Filipino for Filipino is a language on it's own.

I am an Ilocano and I struggled with Tagalog when I moved to Manila. Though Tagalog is being spoken in school before, it is still different from conversational Tagalog. That is why I understand if the girl could not answer simple terms. Also, Filipinos are now using English terms for some words like garden, TV, phone, train, mall, and a lot more.
If you want to be technical, Mathematics is Sipnayan in Tagalog. Science is Agham. Blue is bughaw. Airplane is salipawpaw. God is Bathala.
You have to understand that though Filipino is based on Tagalog, these are still 2 different languages. Filipino accepts the borrowed words such as Matematika, kudeta (coup d etat), hamburger, etc.

If I'm going to illustrate, kapag ikaw ay nabuhay sa isang lugar kung saan ang iyong mother tongue ay ginagamit ng karamihan kaya lamang na dito mas nararanas gamitin ito. And to say the least eh, we are more in an advantageous level kasi even if we don't use Tagalog locally. We somehow understand the language perfectly. With all the news, media outlets, and teleserye that is heavily tagalized where we live on from it pretty much our lives. It would be the reason that MOST natives will or can understand Tagalog no matter the barriers. Basically tayo ay remotely multilingual so to speak.

8:24 The word eroplano in deeper tagalog we call it "Salipawpaw". The word "Eroplano" is a barrowed word from Spanish, but we can also use it in a tagalog sentence/s.
That's not "deeper". Those words were literally invented in the 1960s by the Komisyon ng Wika, to make the language "purer". They're not "real" words, that's why so few people are using them. There are no native words for things like "airplane".

Lets clear this out of the way. For those of you who needs clarification, Tagalog, like Cebuano, Ilokano, Bikolano and Ivatan, is a LANGUAGE and *NOT* a dialect.
Dialects are just a variation of a language. For example: batangas tagalog, bulacan tagalog, rizal. tagalog, manila tagalog. You might think there's no difference but there are some words and even intonations that differ from each tagalog dialect.
And yes, Tagalog was the Basis for Filipino (national language) hence the uncanny similarities. However, even Filipino and Tagalog (pure) have some differences. How much they differ is something that i cannot estimate.
It depends on the dialects, the Tagalogs of Batangas and Quezon is considered purer compared to those in Laguna, Cavite, Rizal and Bulacan. Quezon especially holds a much more diverse sub-dialects because of its geographical and topographical features, and also homes to several non-Tagalog Ethnic Tribes that is also influences the Tagalog spoken in different areas of the province.
It has influences from Batangueno from the West, the kapampangan and Ilocano in the North, the Bicolano in the East, the Visayan Languages like Masbateno, Cebuano, Hiligaynon, Waray-Waray and others in the South, especially the Southern Bondoc Peninsula.
But believe me the Tagalog Vocabulary there is so wide and deep compared to what we have in Official Filipino Language or just the Standard Tayabas Dialect based in Tayabas City.

The similarities would be, for instance, a manileño who speaks Filipino can still understand batangueño albeit vaguely, but there wouldn't be as much problem understanding each other unlike in the case of a Filipino speaker conversing with a waray or perhaps even ilokano/kapampangan speaker. For sure there are language mutations (due to influences--which can sometimes be labeled as sub-dialects or maybe sociolect in some cades) even in a generally tagalog province. And I agree that the "pure" tagalogs' vocabulary may differ vastly than the filipino's. Thanks for elaborating that!

I love Tagalog, but it’s my 2nd language. We had to learn it in school. I’m glad I didn’t grow up in PI when many Spanish loan words were being changed to English. It made it easier to learn Spanish & also Portuguese. Will be learning Italian & French next. It would’ve been great if Spanish was retained as even 3rd official language in PI. I know that my great grandfather spoke it fluently because it was his first language, although born & raised in PI. My mother also speaks it fairly well & has no problems communicating with Hispanic customers & co-workers.
I am currently studying korean language this year but I feel like it's so easy to learn spanish too since most tagalog words are the same in spanish. Truly, Filipinos have been influenced by spanish people during spanish colonization.

I don't understand much about the Filipino culture, but bcs the comments i understand that they do not speak a single language but speak several languages and some confuse the languages? Filipino Language is widely used in the Philippines. But for the fact that the filipino language is a standardize form of tagalog and they tend to call filipino(language) as tagalog. Anyway, there are still some filipino people can't speak fluently and understand Filipino(language) especially those regions who used other languages like Cebuano, Hiligaynon, Ilokano, Bicolano, Waray, Kapampangan and Pangasinan, because they don't usually use the language and lack of education and interest in learning the language.
