    I literally thought of quitting my organic chemistry class within two classes of it. My professor is a bit unorganized, so this was a life saver for me. Subscribed, liked, commented, and now I will check every video you have for help. THANK YOU.

    you really helped me understand a lot of details I was frustrated with, my first week of organic chem has been a nightmare for me...reading the book for 5 hrs straight, trying to understand...then going to class realizing I still didn't get it. I wanted to cry. but this helped me learned the basics so now other things will make more sense to me. Thank you Leah.

    Our A level teachers are forced to teach like in a manner that is best suited to just getting kids to pass the exam.
    Syllabus is to large. They just got time to teach the method and the reasons. Processing the reason, no hope their.
    So when I get this level of patient teaching, I gotta thank you and ask you to keep up the great work.

    I don't know much about chemistry or how to even word this question properly but I always wondered how you number each position and if it's a different structure why numbering changes direction. Like your cyclohexane example, why does the "1" go at the top left. I don't even expect a reply cuz I understand if there's a nitrogen in it or certain functional groups that might change direction I don't know enough I acknowledge some of it but I don't expect the detailed response. Maybe a taste would help?

      I'm sorry, but I don't offer tutoring through TH-cam comments. For help with this and more, I recommend joining the organic chemistry study hall. Full details: leah4sci.com/join

    Hey Leah, are you sure butanoic acid is CH3CH(CH3)CH3*CO2H? The CH3 group before the CO2H would have five bonds here, 3 with H and 2 with the other C atoms. Based off what you're saying it should be CH3CH(CH3)CH2*CO2H... or is there an exception?

    • @Leah4sci
      @Leah4sci  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      at which point in the video? Butanotic acid would be CH3(CH2)2CO2H or CH3CH2CH2CO2H

  • @Cornbreadddd
    @Cornbreadddd 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey Leah, I have a quick simple question on the diagram of Butanoic Acid.
    On the 3rd carbon, which is a CH3, in the line drawing I'm only seeing 2 Hydrogens and not three on that carbon. Where have I gone wrong?
    I'm seeing a carbon met with only two bonds, so I have the thought process that would mean there would be 2 hydrogens instead of 3. Where am I going wrong?

    • @Leah4sci
      @Leah4sci  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Butanoic acid only has one carbon with 3 H atoms, the terminal carbon #4. Carbon #3 is internal and if you count (4-bonds = H) you'll see that you have 4 minus the 2 carbon bonds for a total of 2 hydrogen atoms

    very helpful but your number of hydrogen for the butanoic acid example is not the same, 12:40. 11 and 10 are the two numbers of Hydrogen that i was able to count?

    • @Leah4sci

      Oh wow, thanks for pointing this out, I have a mistake in the drawing. The right-most carbon before the carboxy should be a CH2

    Your videos are so helpful! Thank you so much! I had a question about the last example, Glutamic Acid. According to the structure of the video, the condensed formula would be C5H8NO4. I wanted to double-check my answer so I searched on google and it says that the formula for Glutamic Acid is C5H9NO4. So 9 Hydrogens instead of the 8 that I count according to the skeletal/Lewis structure in the video. Could you please help me clarify this? Thank you in advance!!

    • @Leah4sci
      @Leah4sci  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, of course. This is a great question! The overall charge of glutamic acid will change based on the pH of the solution it is in. This particular amino acid has three ionizable groups - the carboxy group, the amino group, and the side chain. By comparing the pH of the solution to the pKa of those individual groups, we can determine whether each will be protonated or deprotonated and also what the overall charge of the molecule will be. For more on this, you can read my tutorial at leah4sci.com/amino-acid-charge-in-zwitterions-and-isoelectric-point-mcat-tutorial/
